Related Articles Evidence of greater health care needs among older Veterans of the Vietnam War. Mil Med. 2008 Aug;173(8):715-20 Authors: Brooks MS, Laditka SB, Laditka JN This study examined self-rated health, impairments in activities of daily living, and treatment for eight health conditions among Vietnam War-era Veterans, comparing those who served in Vietnam with those who served elsewhere. Data were from the nationally representative 2001 National Survey of Veterans (N = 7,907; 3,923 Veterans served in Vietnam). Age-stratified (<60 years versus > or =60 years) analyses included multivariate logistic regression. In adjusted analyses, among those <60 years of age, those who served in Vietnam had notably poorer self-rated health and higher stroke risk (odds ratio, 1.51; 95% confidence interval, 1.48-1.53); odds of most other conditions were lower. Among those > or =60 years of age, those who served in Vietnam had poorer self-rated health, higher cancer risk (odds ratio, 1.33; 95% confidence interval, 1.32-1.35), and more treatment for hypertension, lung conditions, stroke, and hearing loss. Results suggest greater resource use among older Veterans who served in Vietnam. Clinicians and the Department of Veterans Affairs should especially note their substantially higher cancer risk. The NRA is running an ad in which an Iraq War veteran condemns Obama for once supporting a ban on handguns in Illinois. "Like all the guys I fought with in Iraq, I was honored to defend my country and its freedom," Kurt Rusch, a former Marine, says in the ad. Iraq Veterans Against the War - Winter Soldier Book Release and Benefit Concert Deadline: Oct 7, 2008 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW) was founded by Iraq War Veterans in July 2004 at the annual convention of Veterans for Peace (VFP) in Boston to give a voice to the large number of active duty service people and Veterans who are against this War, but are under various pressures to remain silent. Since it's inception, IVAW has called for Immediate withdrawal of all occupying forces in Iraq, appropriate reparations, and full benefits and support for returning servicemen and women. This event is the official book release celebration for IVAW's new book, Winter Solider: Iraq and Afghanistan . Comprised of testimony given by US Veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars, the book unfolds a compelling narrative of the realities of War - and the very groundwork of all work against War. The event will feature readings from the book, as well as performances for up to five emerging artists and two solo performers who support the cause. The event takes place on Thursday, October 30th at Sullivan Hall, in New York City. This film received an incredible amount of praise at this year's Cannes Film Festival and has since been submitted by Italy (and in the process become one of the frontrunners in the foreign language category) for this year's oscars. It is effectively a mob film about a real life "War" between various factions of organised crime in Naples. The film uses a largely non-professional cast and it doesn't really show, the ensemble is decent, but the best work is done by Veterans Toni Servillo and Gianfelice Imparato. Where the problems arise though are in the narrative and the execution. There are lots of little stories cobbled together here and told in a collage, some interlink and others don't. We are shown a young boy tempted into crime having to choose the path opposite to his friend, a pay-off man entering said boy's estate to provide for the families of loyal men, a couple of youngsters trying to go their own way in the crime world (giving us probably the most pathetic scene in years with both of them in their briefs firing guns into a river) and a senior man and his assistant in charge of getting contracts from companies to dump toxic waste. The latter part is where the real problem with this film arises, it deals with very serious issues and a wider subject matter of great "importance", but the film does nothing to put those issues into a dramatic context.
