At 4:52 p.m. on Saturday (July 5), officers Corey Farina and James Foss were dispatched to Banana Republic at the Derby Street Shoppes on a report of a shoplifter. The officers were provided a description of the suspect who left in a Toyota Corolla. Foss headed toward the Route 3 on ramp and Farina went to Banana Republic. Foss saw the Toyota entering the northbound on-ramp and stopped the car. Meanwhile at Banana Republic, the clerk told Farina that a woman in her late 20s or early 30s had placed merchandise in a tote bag and then took a handbag and left the story without paying. When confronted outside the store, the women allegedly said she was just going to show the items to her mother and then return to pay for them. There was an older woman in the car. The woman handed the merchandise back to the clerk and fled in the Toyota. As it turned out, the woman had left her Wallet with her identification in the tote bag. After stopping the car, Officer Foss could see clothing in the back seat with the price tags from other stores. Officer Farina went to the scene and said the woman fit the description the clerk had provided. The officers placed Danielle Gabree, 29, of 30 Gavin Way, S. Boston, under arrest for shoplifting. The older woman, who was the passenger, could not drive the car because her license was suspended, police said. The car was towed and a subsequent inventory revealed that $1,000 worth of clothing in the back seat h ...

If you are a New Yorker and pay taxes, you had better hope that John McCain wins the next election. Because if he doesn't, your taxes may skyrocket : New York tax filers reporting more than $375,000 a year in earned income may end up paying nearly 60% of their wages in taxes to the government under a Barack Obama presidency, economists who have analyzed his plan said. The Democratic presidential candidate is proposing not only raising the federal income tax, but also adding a Social Security tax for those Americans earning more than $250,000 a year. For New Yorkers, that could mean that if the current Social Security rate is applied, the marginal tax rate, or rate on every extra dollar earned, could rise to 58%. "This is a very eye-popping number," a resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, Alan Viard, said. Read it all. $375K per year is not chicken feed, but it's not all that much in the grand scheme of things either, what with college costs for kids, the cost of raising and educating them in the years before college and the costs of living in New York. In addition to all of these burdens, an Obama Administration is itching to impose a tax regime that will take away hard earned money from taxpayers and will slow down economic activity so significantly as to exacerbate any recession in which we may currently find ourselves. I would, by the way, not be surprised in the slightest to find out that taxpayers in other s ...

As the temperature outdoors goes up, so does the cost of cooling the home. A wide range of smart energy practices can help keep utility bills in check during the summer. The following suggestions, put together by the U.S. Department of Energy and Alliance to Save Energy, can help residents stay cool when the heat is on and save on bills. Clean or replace air conditioning filters monthly or as needed. A well-maintained cooling system will run more efficiently, use less energy and lower energy bills. Also, keep outdoor and indoor air conditioner coils clean. Dirt build-up on the indoor coil can have a costly, negative effect on AC operating efficiency. ...

Filed under: Saving , Simplification I am frugal or as my wife calls me, cheap. Because I can't bear to spend more money on something I can fix or save it really irks me when we have to pitch something because of a stain. While some of us view stain removal as a chore which accompanied by a trusty spray bottle form the supermarket, others tackle stain removal with the same passion as a chemist. It seems pretty simple to remove a stain, we all have secrets passed down from our mothers but did you know that you get baby formula stains out with meat tenderizer? Common baking soda can even be used to get marker off of wood furniture in the event that your kid decides to draw a caricature of you on your coffee table. If you have a specific offender you are trying to remove you can easily check out the "New Zealand Stain Guide". If I could have saved all of the clothes that got stained with chocolate when I left a piece of chocolate in my pants pocket I would have been a very happy blogger. I ended up having to pitch a bunch of dress shirts and khakis as well as many of my wife's good clothes. We ended up spending a significant amount of time and money at the local shopping center replacing the clothes after none of our attempts salvaged the clothing. Do you have any stain removal tips? How long do you fight with a stain before breaking down and replacing the item?   Read  |  Permalink  |  Email this  |  Linking Blogs  |  Comments ...

Enjoy your staycations at Illinois state parks this year because next year they probably will cost you a lot more. Camping fees went up this year — costs for sites offering electrical service doubled — and don’t be surprised if next year you have to pay to get into parks and don’t be surprised if you have to pay more to fish and hunt. According to a legislative staff analysis, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources’ core state funding from the general revenue fund was $127 million in 2003, the last year before Gov. Rod Blagojevich got involved with budgets. General revenue was $67 million in fiscal year 2008 and would have gone up to $70 million if not for Blagojevich’s most recent round of cuts. Instead, funding will be down to $51 million. In 2003, about 2,300 people worked for the DNR; today it’s down to about 1,700. Jeff Lampe of the Peoria Journal Star recently reported that the most recent DNR cuts would mean 163 more jobs lost. “I do know that the General Assembly’s budget as passed would have begun to reverse some of the precipitous cuts to DNR of the past seven years,” said Anders Lindall, public affairs director for the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 31. “But regrettably the governor acted to cut funding for DNR staff even below last year’s levels in every key area. ... All these divisions will take further cuts to front-line staff if the governor’s vetoes are not reversed.” T ...
