Even as Apple revels in the s ales successes of the iPhone 3G , the reigning king of smart phone market share – Research in Motion – is preparing to launch as many as three new BlackBerry models. According to Rockville, Md., -based ChangeWave Research , this scenario puts Apple and RIM “on a collision course in the consumer smart phone market.” In a follow-up to its June survey , which showed RIM leading Apple among consumers with 42 percent of the market versus 11 percent, ChangeWave asked its members how likely they would be to buy one of the new BlackBerries. Each of the models – the already announced “Bold” as well as two other expected variations, the “Thunder” and the “Kickstart” – showed “considerable potential among consumers.” The most expensive of the new BlackBerries, the $299-$399 Bold, proved the most popular, with 17 percent saying they’d be very likely or somewhat likely to buy it. The middle model, Thunder ($199-$299), generated a bit less interest (15 percent) and Kickstart, with the cheapest price range ($149-$199), the least interest (13 percent). One would expect the opposite, particularly given Apple’s findings that its customers wanted a cheaper iPhone (Apple CEO Steve Jobs said in his WWDC Keynote that the number one reason people didn't buy iPhones is because they just can't afford it (56%)." Then again, it could be that Apple and RIM may not be competing for as many of the same customers as one might think. Ano ...

An NDA is something that you volunteer for, it is willful act, you must choose to agree to the terms of the NDA. No one is forcing you to do it, there are no guns pointed at your head. If you do not like or agree with the terms of the NDA, then do not sign it. However, if you do choose to sign it, then, in my opinion, you lose the right to bitch and moan about the fact that you cannot divulge privileged information. We all knew what we were getting into when we agreed to the iPhone Developer Program NDA, and we all know that when you buy a WWDC ticket, you are bound by an NDA that covers every word overhead, every word displayed, every piece of content in that conference with the exception of the Keynote. If we really feel so strongly that these NDAs are overbearing and excessive, then we have the right to voice our disapproval by NOT agreeing to them. read more ...

Steve Jobs is alive and I say this again. Various reports of his physical condition and general health have circulated since we’ve seen him looking not that well at this year WWDC . While the iPhone was being sold in 1 million units during its first weekend, Apple’s shares dropped due to Steve’s rumored health problems. But nobody pulled off such a stunt like Bloomberg the other day. When updating Steve Jobs future obituary Bloomberg managed to publish it. Human error? Sure. Did it get picked up by the media? Sure it did. Bloomberg has quite an audience. It would be nearly impossible to miss such news especially right now when Apple is so hot. Did Bloomber retract the story? Well, sure they did: Retraction: Story Referencing Apple Was Sent in Error by Bloomberg News Aug. 27 (Bloomberg) — An incomplete story referencing Apple Inc. was inadvertently published by Bloomberg News at 4:27 p.m. New York time today. The item was never meant for publication and has been retracted. —Editor: Joe Winski, Cesca Antonelli I guess Steve was even more surprised when people were checking if he was indeed alive. We've had our hands on Apple's (AAPL) iPhone 3G for a month now, as we can easily declare that it's the best cellphone we've ever owned. But there's a lot of room for improvement. Rather than list features or go over the basics -- you can find those anywhere -- we thought we'd evaluate the iPhone 3G and the iPhone 2.0 operating system from three specific perspectives: Big picture: As a smartphone for the always-on, always-connected professional, the iPhone 3G is hit-or-miss. It is elegant and user-friendly, but not as reliable as it should be. AT&T's network fades in and out, and sometimes disappears. That could be a problem with the network itself, or it could be a chipset problem as one Street analyst suggests . Either way, that doesn't look like something an Apple software update could easily fix for us. The super-fast 3G Internet that looked so good in Steve Jobs' WWDC Keynote is often pokey. And the GPS is often slow to respond and quick to lose our position in a moving vehicle. Downloading apps from the App Store is a breeze, but updating them is inexplicably slow. A recent software update fixed a bug that made the iPhone's virtual keyboard clunky, but we still need to restart the phone about once a day to deal with gremlins -- sometimes because it simply stops responding. Battery life isn't as big a problem as some have suggested, but the last half seems to go a lot faster than the first half. And sorry, but the most common ...
