After consecutive 10-24 seasons and three straight years without a playoff appearance, it was clear that the Minnesota Lynx needed help in this year's WNBA Draft. Less than two months later, it's already clear they got it. In the INDIANAPOLIS STAR, Kristen Leigh Porter writes "need proof of the parity among the WNBA's 14 teams? The four top teams in the league have each lost six games. That includes the star-studded Los Angeles Sparks squad picked to win the title in a preseason poll of WNBA general managers, along with Connecticut, Detroit and San Antonio. One team has seven losses, and the Indiana Fever (9-8) are among two with eight. Now that's balance. ‘That's something I realized early on, that this was going to be the strongest -- from top to bottom -- league that we've ever had,' Fever coach Lin Dunn said. ‘(With) the infusion from this Draft and the last couple of drafts, these players have gotten better. I think it's really good for the league.'" ...

The scene was set for a dazzling Hollywood premiere, but the Phoenix Mercury didn't want to play their part. Diana Taurasi scored 13 of her 29 points in the fourth quarter, Cappie Pondexter scored 28 and the Mercury spoiled rookie Candace Parker's Los Angeles debut and the Sparks' home opener with an 85-79 win Friday night. The defending WNBA champion Mercury (2-4) overcame an 18-point fourth-quarter deficit and avenged a season-opening loss to the Sparks (4-2) in which Parker scored 34 in her WNBA debut on the day of the Mercury's ring ceremony. "It felt great," said Pondexter, the league's leading scorer. "We showed what our team is all about today. It looked like it was over in the third quarter and L.A. got a little lax. We came out focused and intent." Parker, who the Sparks selected with the first overall pick in the WNBA Draft the morning after she led Tennessee to its second straight national title, had 19 points and 14 rebounds in this game. ...

Filed under: Women's Sports , Beijing , Attractive Olympians O lympic athletes often don't get paid to do anything other than look good. In that vein, Attractive Olympians handicaps which athletes may rake in endorsement deals after the Olympics. Becky Hammon just wants to be an Olympian -- so badly that she'll use her dual citizenship this summer as a member of the Russian national team, an act that has led some to call her a traitor . Quick history: Despite being an All-America at Colorado State, Becky Hammon was shunned at the 1999 WNBA Draft. She joined the New York Liberty as a free agent, where she had an immediate impact off the bench but spent four years backing up Teresa Weatherspoon. After a breakout season in 2003, she was left off the Athens squad in 2004. In 2007, she was the runner-up in the WNBA MVP vote, yet her invitation to try out for the 2008 U.S. Olympic team was less than sincere. Personally, if I'd been snubbed by one country that much, I might consider going where I felt appreciated, too -- her Russian club, CSKA Moscow, pays her in the seven figures, and she was a lock for the Olympic team there. But let's take a step back from the politics involved and ask something more superficial: how does this dilemma affect her sex appeal? Will this affect her potential sponsorships? Might Americans actually cheer for a Russian team? Is "Becky" an acceptable Russian name? None of these answers -- and more! -- after ...

Unlike five of his former Kansas teammates, point guard Russell Robinson wasn't taken in last week's NBA Draft. But Robinson has at least cracked the door with the NBA after accepting an invitation to play for the Houston Rockets' summer-league team. "You have to take your opportunities where you can," said Robinson, who worked out twice for the Rockets in recent weeks. "If this doesn't work out, I still have some possibilities in Europe. But I'm going to work hard to make this work." •  Missouri coach Mike Anderson has agreed to release junior guard Keon Lawrence from his scholarship. Lawrence averaged more than 29 minutes in 2007-08 and was third on the team with 11 points per game. •  Matee Ajavon scored a season-high 24 points in host Houston's 75-61 victory over Indiana.... Host San Antonio capitalized on Seimone Augustus' absence to beat Minnesota 73-65 in a WNBA game. Augustus (sprained toe) missed her first game after 82 straight starts.... Wichita State third baseman Conor Gillaspie was named a second-team All-America selection by Rivals.com and Ping Baseball. Pitcher Anthony Capra was a third-team selection by Ping. Gillaspie, center fielder Andy Dirks and pitcher Rob Musgrave were named to the American Baseball Coaches Association All-Region team. Capra and pitcher Anthony Shafer were named to the second team. BASKETBALL UCLA's Josh Shipp has withdrawn from the NBA Draft and will return to the Bruins for his senior season. The guard declared himself eligible in April on the final day underclassmen could enter the Draft, but did not hire an agent, which allowed him to back out under NCAA rules. •  Lindsay Whalen made another successful return to her home state, scoring 14 points to help the visiting Connecticut Sun beat the Minnesota Lynx 75-66 Tuesday night in the WNBA. ...
