Location is a hot field in mobile computing. It makes sense — you’re on the move, and newer phones such as the Apple iPhone and T-Mobile’s Android-based G1 have global positioning systems (GPS) built-in. So mobile applications are being built in droves to use location, but WEB-based apps are largely being left out of the [...] ...

Filed under: Internet , WEB services Thinking about picking up a new T-Mobile G1, but want to know how big it is first? Pective is a new WEB service that will show you pictures of various items in actual size. Just select the size of your monitor and Pective will do the rest. The service isn't perfect. For example, I have a 15.4 inch widescreen display, while Pective only allows you to select a 15 or 16 inch display. So the picture of a CD it displayed was slightly larger than the actual CD I held up to the screen to make a comparison. But it was close. Close enough that I I can figure out how much space an iPhone would take up in my hand, or how hard it would be to type on the G1's thumb keyboard. Right now there are only a handful of items to sift through on Pective. But that works out well because there's also no search function. You can only BROWSER. Users can add their own images, and anyone can report whether the sizes for uploaded images is accurate or inaccurate. As more items get added, I certainly hope Pective adds a search box. On September 5 we r eported on the launch of the Google WEB BROWSER Chrome , and now just over a month later it's time for a quick update. In a highly competitive market it seems the upper hand is being held by the two key incumbents' Mozilla's Firefox and Microsoft's Explorer. Firefox 3 was released on June 17 to great fanfare and a successful attempt on the world record number of software downloads in a single day, with over 8 million downloads in a 24 hour period. (Source: Mozilla.org ) Since the release of Google Chrome in the four Asia Pacific markets that Hitwise measure each saw Google share of visits overtake Firefox for the day, but then slide substantially over the following week. This is reflective of the download being featured on the front page of Google for the week of launch. The chart below reflects activity in the Australian market lead up to and since the launch of Firefox 3 on June 17/18 and the subsequent launch of Google Chrome. Charts for New Zealand, Singapore and Hong Kong are at the end of the article and each reflect the same pattern of a short peak versus Firefox's (Mozilla.org) ability to maintain a substantial share of visits. This may be muddied by the value of add-ons plus downloads of their email client Thunderbird. Across the Asia Pacific region, New Zealand and Australia took to Google Chrome with greater urgency that in Hong Kong and Singapore. The chart below highlights the visits to Google Chrome fo ...

Filed under: Audio , Linux , Open Source There are plenty of things to love about a modern desktop Linux distribution like Ubuntu 8.04. It's got nifty desktop effects, comes with an office suite, WEB BROWSER, media player, and pretty much anything else you need for day to day computer user. And there's a huge list of applications you can install with the click of a mouse. But there's one thing I absolutely hate. And that's the fact that while package managers like Synaptic and apt-get make it incredibly easy to install all sorts of applications, uninstalling is another matter. I wanted to see if I could get some audio editing tools up and running on my Eee PC 1000H today. I could have just tried installing Jack and Ardour , but I decided to go all out and install Ubuntu Studio 's audio packages. I opened a terminal, typed in "sudo apt-get install ubuntustudio-audio," and after downloading 300MB of files and unpacking them to take up 600MB on my desktop I was all set. Dozens of utilities has been installed, most of which I didn't have any intention of using. After playing around a bit, I couldn't figure out how to playback audio in Ardour, the one app I really wanted to use. And Ardour crashed about 70% of the time I tried to launch it. So I decided to uninstall using the same method. I opened a terminal, typed "sudo apt-get remove ubuntustudio-audio" and received a message saying I could free up 49.2KB. Only two packages would be unins ...

The PocketSurfer 2 from DataWind is currently going for a decent price of $350 in the UK. This Internet-focused device is perfect for browsing the WEB on the go. However, there is an Internet connection catch you should probably be aware of. The device has a built in GPS, email and WEB BROWSER. That is all, so if you need more than that, look elsewhere. However, the real attraction is the free Internet access for the first year. You can even pay an additional 40 EUR and be covered for another year. But as it turns out, it’s not worth it. Unfortunately, the PocketSurfer2 relies on the GPRS network. Not even their “patented data compression technology” can make that feel like anything faster than a snail’s pace. Plus, your free Internet access amounts to just 20 hours a month! You can have the cap lifted for $6 more a month, but come on! That’s a lot of double talk, if you ask me. The battery life is also pretty bad at just four hours. The screen is super small at 640 x 240 and feels very much stuck in the past. While this one’s a good idea on the surface, it’s definitely not impressive upon closer inspection. [via Gadget Lab at Wired ] Relevant Entries on SlashGear PocketSurfer2, For Real This Time? I use the phone for everything i.e.calls, calendar, WEB, email etc. It is for my own personal use not company although if I can get the blackberry service for free as part of the contract then I will look at getting my company emails sent to me. I have noticed a couple of complaints re the bold which I hope some people can comment on. 1. BROWSER is slow 2. Push E-mail is not that responsive 3. Roller ball gets stuck (this I have seen on other blackberry's using the same ball as the bold) 4. Streaming videos not that responsive Could anybody who have actually used the bold comment on these points. Your help gratefully received. Regards Neil ...
