His supernatural novel The Castle of Otranto might not be much read today, but there is a direct line of cultural descent to the films of Tim Burton He was, wrote Thomas Macaulay , "the most eccentric, most artificial, most fastidious, most capricious of men", the culmination of what it was to be rich, English and stylish in the mid-18th century. Horace WALPOLE's whole life was in some ways an artifice, a show of style and wit that might, were it not so brilliantly done, have been no more substantial than the wooden battlements he once erected at Strawberry Hill , his gothic home near the Thames. But somehow, thankfully, almost everything WALPOLE dabbled in has endured. His supernatural novel The Castle of Otranto might not be much read today, but gothic horror thrives: there is a direct line of cultural descent from WALPOLE to the films of Tim Burton. WALPOLE's letters have survived, published in voluminous editions . Dip into them at random and you share something of the life of a cultured, English 18th-century grandee. Strawberry Hill itself has also lasted and is now being restored by a committed team of enthusiasts and craftsmen, while its contents – sadly auctioned in 1842 – have been gathered for an exhibition at the V&A , which opened last week. Among many other things WALPOLE was one of the first people to systematically collect items of historical importance – over 4,000 of them by his death. Many have been lost, but the m ...

With spring nearly upon us, town officials and a local business owner are rushing to put together a downtown farmer’s market in time for summer. Selectmen set up a Farmer’s Market Committee and installed Bill Norwood as the chairman after he proposed the creation of a regular downtown bazaar. Norwood, the co-owner of Dick & Jane’s General Store, said he’s been involved in farmer’s markets as a vendor and coordinator in northern California before moving to WALPOLE. He proposed a WALPOLE market in the municipal parking lot downtown to be set up on Saturday mornings and for a few hours on a weekday evening. Blackburn Hall could be utilized in winter months as an indoor market, as well, he said. A farmer’s market would bring people into the center of town and help downtown business, said Selectman David Sullivan. Norwood also predicted a market would bring in residents from nearby communities.  “It’s great to get the town back to a town,” Sullivan said. Town officials have previously talked about establishing a farmer’s market on the WALPOLE Common and along Front Street, said Economic Development Officer Stephanie Mercandetti. There would be problems with that location, however, she said because an ECDC nursery uses the church there on weekdays and a farmer’s market would disrupt weddings and services on the weekends. Mercandetti said she’s spoken with the Health and Recreation Departments and public safety and the municipal lot could ...

The little blue-enamelled toothpick case left quite an impression. Not because it was so remarkably beautiful, but because it seemed so random, useless even – in a good way. Many of the items currently on display in the V&A’s exhibition on Horace WALPOLE and Strawberry Hill are of that quality, and that’s their attraction. There are little boxes and caskets, finely painted china, vases, a C16th cardinal’s hat, a rosewood cabinet full of miniatures, and a wooden cravat WALPOLE apparently wore for a party at his home. Strawberry Hill, WALPOLE’s summer villa by the Thames at Twickenham where all these items come from, was in itself more than a little bid odd. Designed as ‘a little gothic castle’ it revived the style of the Middle Ages and allegedly inspired the first Gothic novel, WALPOLE’s very dark and improbable Castle of Otranto . A number of items in the collection either directly or indirectly relate to that novel, such as John Carter’s painting of ‘The Entry of Frederick into the Castle of Otranto’, displaying a scene from the end of the book, or the Gothic lantern that was intended to contribute to the general mood of “gloomth” WALPOLE was so fond of. In tune with the Gothic theme, there are a suit of armour and a pair of richly embroidered gauntlet gloves, stained glass panels and a “devil’s looking glass”. The library has a C13th Charter of the Forests and a Book of Arms. But there are also more recent items, such as satirical pri ...

My camera lives in my purse. I love capturing unexpected moments. I was driving home from work one day this week when I spotted this: Yes, that’s a Burger King crown on his head. He appeared to be sober. Yesterday I spotted these people walking through town: I think they started their St. Patrick’s Day drinking a bit early. Could it be the moon? Like many knitters, I keep my notions in tins (Altoids tins, gum tins, etc.). I was at the store this week and spotted a very cool tin. It was marked 50% off and was in my cart before I thought to see what was inside. As a bonus, it was something I could use: We went to the park this weekend, but I didn’t take many pictures. I did snap this one of Kishka enjoying the stream: The day at the park wore her out: Little known fact about Sadie: sometimes she sleeps with her eyes open. She was snoring when I took this picture: And here she is, contemplating her place in the universe: I just started the cuffs on my socks. It won’t be long before I’m wearing these! Finally, best buddies: ...
