Here we go again? Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos had some harsh words for Minority Leader Malcolm Smith when asked today by WABC-TV/Channel 7's Dave Evans for his reaction to reports ( here and here ) of Smith's hard-sell fund-raising pitch at a recent DSCC event in Kingston. Evans caught up with Skelos at the Sheraton in Midtown Manhattan outside the AFL-CIO's endorsement meeting (which resulted in no endorsements). He was kind enough to send over the following comments from the majority leader: "I think it borders on criminality. You cannot threaten people to give contributions. Certainly that's not the change I think people are looking for. That's thuggery and I think totally inappropriate to make those types of statements. You're not allowed - quid pro quo is a crime - you go to jail." On the heels of Skelos' comments comes a press release from Senate Investigations Committee Chairman George Winner calling Smith's pitch "disburbing," "outrageous," "over-the-top" and something that warrants "further review" by either the US attorney's office or the Ulster County DA. "These comments should confirm the worst fears of neutral government observers and Albany watchdogs, and remind New Yorkers of corrupt, Tammany-Hall style politics," Winner said. "If true, these comments are potentially criminal and show that Senator Smith may have broken a number of laws - including coercion, official misconduct, attempted bribery and even con ... Assemblyman Rory Lancman, a Queens Democrat; and Sen. Marty Golden, a Brooklyn Republican; appeared on WABC's "Up Close With Diana Williams" this Sunday and expressed mutual support for some degree of reduction in member item spending when the Legislature returns to Albany tomorrow. At about the 6:10-minute mark, Williams asks about the $100 million worth of pork trimming Paterson proposed, to which Golden replied promptly: "Do it." "Everything's got to take a little bit of a cut," Golden said, adding later: "This is a year that we are in trouble. We've got to set a fundamental structure for next year, for the years that follow so that we can balance the books here." Lancman was slightly more circumspect in his response, saying: "I think some version of that will pass," and adding: "We'll see what the number is. But in principle, you know, we need to spread the pain, and if member items are part of that pain, I think that's something we can accept." Neither Lancman nor Golden used the word "crisis" to explain where New York is, fiscally speaking. Lancman, who has repeatedly insisted Gov. David Paterson is overstating the problem , called the situation "serious, but not dire, not a crisis." Golden said the state is "in serious financial trouble" and even went so far as to declare: "We are in the middle of a depression." Back in January we pointed out that research was underway in Phoenix to create a surgery-practice application using the Wiimote. They've finished the project. That's the device at the left, and the researchers have found that for a fraction of the cost of a high-tech simulator, they've improved residents' skills in certain procedures by 50 percent. "One of the problems we’ve had over the years is we had no method to teach surgeons surgical skills without going into surgery," said Dr. Mark Smith, a co-developer and a gynecological surgeon at Banner Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix. "We now have simulators that help them develop those skills. The problem is they are incredibly expensive — like a flight simulator for a pilot. This gives us a much less costly way to train these fine motor skills that the surgeons employ during surgery." WABC-TV in New York did a story on the Wii simulator, which includes video. News8 Austin, a Time-Warner cable news channel, also features a Q&A with Dr. Smith on its site (where we got the pic).
