In May the Department of Veterans Affairs banned Voter Registration drives in V.A. hospitals and other government buildings. Last week, the Senate introduced a bill to override the ban. This ban hurts thousands of young veterans who have been injured while fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. Young Americans aged 18-29, make up the largest voting bloc in history, with over 44 million eligible to cast a ballot. Thousands of young people have fought in Iraq or Afghanistan and many of them are just now eligible to vote in their first election. Banning the most basic act of democracy from Americans who have fought for our democracy just doesn't make any sense. We should be helping our veterans register and vote, not making it more difficult. That's why 4,651 Rock the Vote members emailed their Senators on Wednesday, asking them to co-sponsor the Veterans Voting Support Act and see that it gets passed quickly. Two days ago, similar legislation was introduced by the House . The largest young Voter movement in history is about more than just Voter Registration. Congress has begun to take notice of important voting rights issues, but it's up to young voters to stand up and take action. Our forty four million voices are only heard if we speak up. If you care about our veterans and protecting their ability to vote, join Rock the Vote and email your Senators today. ...

The Rundown is a weekday synopsis of news involving politics and government from the pages of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, as well as headlines of note from elsewhere.   The state's Voter Registration system is fully operational after a series of glitches that prevented the system for 2 1/2 years from crosschecking voters' names with death, felony and driver records. The system is meant to help prevent and catch fraud as record numbers register for the Nov. 4 presidential election. State officials are scrambling now that the emerald ash borer has been found in a second location. Officials have imposed a quarantine on ash products in Washington, Ozaukee, Fond du Lac and Sheboygan counties. The La Crosse Tribune reports U.S. Sen. Barack Obama's campaign presidential campaign headquarters in Viroqua have been vandalized for the second time in a month. The  Associated Press reports a federal judge will soon hear a case over whether Green Bay officials should have allowed a nativity scene to be placed on City Hall last Christmas. The architect of the plan to put the nativity scene on government property, Chad Fradette, is now running as a Republican against state Sen. Dave Hansen (D-Green Bay). ...

Democrats are poised to increase their share of registered voters in Kentucky for the first time in two decades, thanks to a surge in sign-ups and the first slowdown in Republican registrants in years. Democrats had seen a gradual decline among their ranks for 15 consecutive general elections since a peak in 1989, when 67.6 percent of Kentucky voters were card-carrying Democrats. That proportion shrank to an all-time low of 56.9 percent last fall. Since then, Democrats have jumped nearly a half a percentage point to 57.3 percent, as they signed up 30,554 new voters between November 2007 and July 15. Republicans, in that same span, had a net gain of 5,470 registrants and lost voters in some counties, including Fayette. Election officials and observers attribute the Democratic Party's gain to a combination of buzz over that party's presidential primary and the Democrats taking back the governor's office last fall. ...

Democrats are increasing their Registration numbers while voters are fleeing from the Republican Party in droves. New York Times : In several states, including the traditional battlegrounds of Nevada and Iowa, Democrats have surprised their own party officials with significant gains in Registration. In both of those states, there are now more registered Democrats than Republicans, a flip from 2004. No states have switched to the Republicans over the same period, according to data from 26 of the 29 states in which voters register by party. (Three of the states did not have complete data.) In six states, including Iowa, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania, the Democratic piece of the Registration pie grew more than three percentage points, while the Republican share declined. Given the way Republicans governed over the last seven years, these kind of stories make perfect sense, but to put it into historical context, this is a major shift in the political landscape. But for a shift away from one party to sustain itself — the current Registration trend is now in its fourth year — is remarkable, researchers who study voting patterns say. And though comparable data are not available for the 21 states where voters do not register by party, there is evidence that an increasing number of voters in those states are also moving away from the Republican Party based on the results of recent state and Congressional elections, the researchers said. “This ...
