JEFFERSON CITY | The Missouri Secretary of State’s office released turnout numbers for Tuesday’s primary. They were low. Unofficially, 755,385 registered voters, about 18.9 percent, turned out for the election. That’s well short of the 31 percent forecasted by the state ahead of time. The most upstanding of Missouri citizens, apparently, come from Dade County , which boasted turnout of 41.6 percent. ...

And the preparations have begun. Members of the Crawford County Clerk’s office went to visit polling sites Friday as one of several safety and procedural precautions the office is taking before the primary election rolls around Tuesday. A number of those precautions will be seen on Tuesday night. According to Liz Hart, the County Clerk’s office employee who has manned the election-day computer since its inception several years ago, members of the county clerk’s office make a number of safety checks before the votes are officially tabulated. “We spend a lot of time before the election testing to make sure everything will run smoothly,” Hart said. Once everyone has voted at the polling place, the polling place manager will close the building and go to the ballot scanner, opening up a sealed compartment within the machine to remove a media card. That card holds the results from everyone’s scanned ballots. The card is then sealed into a bag, which is taken to the Crawford County Courthouse in Girard. Once there, workers check the seal number against the seal assigned to that particular polling place. “That just shows us that nobody has opened up the bag between the polling place and the courthouse,” Hart said. “Once we check that, the seal is broken.” The card is then put into tabulating software into one central processing center. The computer itself is also kept safe — it’s housed in a safe any time that it’s not time for an election, and ...

Newton County Sheriff Ken Copeland has knocked down his first challenger this election year, beating out opponent Mike Langland by 654 votes in the Republican primary Tuesday. He will now face Democrat Lonny Steele and Libertarian Roxie Fausnaught in the general election this November. Neither of the latter two candidates had any opponents in their respective party primaries. With an 18 percent Voter turnout, or 6,852 county voters total, Copeland won the election by 11 percentage points, four more than the last time he faced down Langland in 2004. Copeland, who had campaigned on his 26 years of law enforcement experience, waited out election night with his family in his office at the sheriff’s department in Neosho. Minutes after the final precinct numbers were counted, he stated he was “very pleased” with the results. He also acknowledged that the wide margin between himself and Langland made him “feel really good” about having “the support of the people here.” “I so very much appreciate the support and endorsement that the voters gave me,” Copeland said. “I’ve dedicated my life to serving and I certainly appreciate the support of the people and I’m looking forward to serving another term with them.”  An extremely close race throughout the evening, Langland was ahead at one point early on when Copeland slowly began to pull away toward the end. He was already 635 votes past Langland when the last four precincts — Neosho West, Stap ...
