Vivendi cheered investors yesterday with a rise in second-quarter profits thanks to strong growth at its videogame and pay-TV businesses, and news that it will not be launching a refinancing to fund a recent spate of deals. But Universal Music, the world's largest music company and part of the Paris-based Vivendi empire, saw revenues decline 5.3% and profits drop 9.2% in the three months to the end of June, as CD sales continued to slide and revenues from digital downloads failed to plug the gap. Chairman Jean-Bernard Lévy said that despite "a tighter economic environment" the company would stick to its forecast of profit growth similar to last year. The company had shown "very good resistance to this slightly tense economic situation", he said, although analysts admitted they still had reservations about the potential impact of a prolonged period of economic downturn on the company. Vivendi has been beefing itself up through acquisitions this year. In April it spent €4.5bn (£3.6bn) buying out Neuf Cegetel, the French fixed-line telecoms company, so it could add residential broadband services to the portfolio of products offered by its SFR mobile phone Unit. Vodafone has a 44% stake in SFR and has long wanted full control, as France is the only major western economy in which it does not own a mobile phone business. Vivendi, however, also wants control of the business. In July Vivendi merged its computer games business, the creator ... Source: uk.reuters.com --- 35 days ago

Isn't that incredible that Telecom New Zealand can charge my mobile data usage every month but it can't provide a simple way, other then calling their help desk every day, to follow my usage? They are able to put a $$$ amount in my monthly bill, but I can't find my usage in data terms (megabytes or gigabytes) anywhere on the invoice or on-line. They use a very cryptic "data calls" Unit that means nothing to me. Telecom New Zealand makes it really hard for me to control my usage. And they charge dearly if I go over my limits. Vodafone is a bit better in this area, but their on-line meter is frequently outdated or incorrect according to discussions in our forums. In Australia the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission issued a warn to consumers regarding mobile data usage . What about here? TUANZ? Commerce Commission? Anyone awake and aware that we have overpriced data plans? ... Source: www.bloggingstocks.com --- 3 hours ago
Filed under: Analyst reports , Forecasts , Apple Inc (AAPL) , iPhone As everybody's focused on Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL )'s "Let's Rock" event and the expected new iPod lineup, today Dow Jones reported that T-Mobile Czech Republic AS, a Czech Unit of Deutsche Telekom 's (NYSE: DT ), said it has sold more than 5,000 iPhones since the launch on August 22. I know, 5,000 does not sound too much, definitely not in the context of overall iPhone sales globally. And it's particularly disconcerting after a Weisel analyst lowered revenue and EPS estimates on Tuesday, writing that "Retail store checks indicate decelerating sales,'' and that "iPhone Unit sales have slowed in the past two weeks.'' But let's not forget the Czech Republic has a population of 10 million, and that this number doesn't include sales from the other two major local competitors, Czech units of Telefonica SA (NYSE: TEF ) and Vodafone Group Plc (NYSE: VOD ) , both of which would not disclose sales. According to the Dow-Jones, Vodafone may have sold 5,000 phones as well, and assuming this is indicative, then about 15,000 iPhones sold in a short time in a small country, sounds more promising (even if its is still lower -- percentage wise -- from U.S. sales). T-Mobile says it expects to sell some 50,000 iPhones by year-end. The Dow Jones notes that local media say that retail iPhone sales "are dwarfed by several tens of thousands of earlier-generation iPhones bought unofficially ... Not sure why but there were some articles today about the deal between Virgin Media and mobile advertising firm 4th Screen deal. 4th Screen was already selling ads for Virgin Mobile, but it may well be an extension of the deal with 4th Screen collaborating with Virgin's in-house advertising Unit ids to plan and execute cross-platform efforts spanning mobile, television and the web. With o2 as main client, 4th Screen had gained lots of traction in the last few months in the UK market. Yahoo! runs mobile ads for 3, T-Mobile and Vodafone. Not many news from others: ScreenTonic, Nokia,... Banner prices are today artificially inflated by the scarcity of mobile advertising inventory. As mentionned several times here , expect those prices to go down over time, as inventory rises. This already started to happen when O2 active inventory was made available. ...

The Southern African nation’s mobile firm Cellular (mCel) said on Friday it will pump about 70 million US dollars to widen its network. Mozambique is one of the poorest countries in Africa following a war which ended in 1992. Several of its services including communication lost ground due to war. "We will be investing $70 million in 2008 to improve our infrastructure and expand our national network coverage,” the mobile company said in a statement. A Reuters report Friday said mCel is also expected to open 110 new base stations as part of its planned 200 stations before the end of the year. The report further said the mobile group was set to introduce new technologies including third-generation (3G) functions, which allow users to make video calls and connect to the Internet using a 3G card. About 128 districts in the country are expected to benefit from the company’s network expansion by the year 2009. The mobile group which competes with Vodacom Mozambique, a Unit of South Africa’s biggest mobile operator, is partly owned by the Mozambican government and has more than 3 million customers in the country, with a 60 percent market share. Vodacom, which is jointly owned by Africa's largest fixed-line operator Telkom and Britain's Vodafone, launched its Mozambique mobile phone operation in late December 2003 and recently it said it would invest $50 million to expand its network infrastructure in rural areas. (Telecompaper) Vodafone has won a court case against the UK tax service, meaning the mobile operator is not liable for UK corporation tax on earnings from its Luxembourg subsidiary. The High Court ordered Revenue & Customs to close the inquiry into Vodafone's 2001 tax return after ruling that it would be unlawful to apply UK tax rates to the foreign subsidiary, reports the Financial Times. The Luxembourg Unit was set up as part of Vodafone's 1999 acquisition of Mannesmann and was used for financing. Vodafone had set aside several billion pounds as a provision in the event it lost the case. Revenue & Customs said it would appeal the court decision. ...
