Review by Fo CASSANDRA WILSON: Loverly Blue Note, 2008 Vocal Jazz – Standards albums are a dime a dozen, but they hardly ever sound like this, Wilson’s first all-standards release in 20 years. Her deep, slow-moan delivery is an odd fit for some of the breezier tunes, but that tension is actually part of why this album works so well. There’s a “live” feel and immediacy to the recording, the band is just terrific, and it’s clear that Wilson has really taken the time to absorb the lyrics – so she doesn’t just sing the melody, she sings the SONG. Fo’s Picks: 2, 4, 5, 6, 8*, 9, 10*, 11 1. 4:16 – upbeat bounce, slight ache in voice, peppy piano, sassy trumpet 2. 4:58 – slow, slinky, almost decadently rich; nice piano break and slide guitar 3. 5:02 – midtempo sway, very relaxed, homey feel 4. 5:51 – catchy guitar/piano into gliding midtempo; cool piano break 5. 4:23 – excellent chewy rhythm, hot percussion, elastic vox; really moves 6. 6:42 – oooh... fat bass, supercool rhythm; plush, very romantic Vocal 7. 5:01 – just acoustic guitar & deep intimate Vocal, a soft caress 8. 5:42 – bubbling original groove; cool, incessant rhythm and soulful Vocal 9. 4:40 – solid blues/soul groove, no-nonsense Vocal, nice funky energy 10. 4:46 – deep south blues, excellent sassy Vocal, cool guitar & percussion 11. 4:47 – smoky ballad, just slinky Vocal and laid-back bass... very hip 12. 4:35 – an easy sway: warm Vocal with scat break, swings gently [ Fo ] 1-Oc ...

Review by Fo MARCUS SHELBY Jazz ORCHESTRA: Harriet Tubman Noir, 2008 MODERN BIG BAND – This is a stunning oratorio about the heroic slave/spy/nurse/activist by local bassist/composer Shelby, a sprawling black historical epic reminiscent of Duke Ellington’s later work, with the influence of Charles Mingus and Wynton Marsalis also evident. The band and soloists are consistently excellent, while singers Faye Carol and Kenny Washington bring power and phenomenal swing (and can scat like mad). Just wonderful, an absolute triumph. Fo’s Picks: Disc 1 – 2, 3, 5 Disc 2 – 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 DISC ONE 1. 1:44 – calm bluesy intro, sets up the main melodic theme 2. 9:29 – sharp cry into bold, rolling groove w/ African undertone, strong solos 3. 10:35 – awesome Vocal, firm and defiant; starts slowly, turns upbeat 4. 4:51 – happily swinging love song; good but feels a bit out of place here 5. 5:23 – engaging uptempo glide, hummable melody; vocals add gospel feel 6. 8:28 – gospel hymn, simply stated, strong vocals and sweet ensemble 7. 3:21 – deliberate pace, complex Vocal harmony, interlaced horns DISC TWO 1. 14:03 – cool sneaky instrumental, a high-wire groove, very strong solos 2. 6:04 – instrumental starts with cold fire, shifts to more soulful feel; hot sax 3. 4:45 – baritone Vocal, slow and somber, soft, dusky horns, intriguing rhythm 4. 8:30 – easy walking blues, laid-back, but ends in a raucous celebration 5. 9:50 – classic spiritual, advanced harm ...

Java Jazz Productions, the organizer of the country’s biggest musical event, the Java Jazz International Festival, has more to offer to Jazz enthusiasts than just a three-day festival every March. Having gained international recognition as a world-class music concert organizer, it now aims to produce concerts featuring international artists throughout the year. In the midst of this year’s Lebaran holiday mood, the company will present Diana Krall, dubbed “The First Lady of Jazz”, at the Ritz Carlton Jakarta, Pacific Place, on Oct. 5. “The Jakarta audience is very lucky because this great Jazz concert will be held at the end of the joint holiday when most offices and businesses are still closed,” the production’s program director, Paul Dankmeyer, said. The Grammy-winning artist for the Best Jazz Performance (1999) and the Best Jazz Vocal Album (2002) is currently on her Asian tour to promote her latest album, The Very Best of Diana Krall (2007), which was released along with her DVD album. Also in October, the company will hold the first soul music festival, called The Axis Jakarta International Soulnation Festival, at Istora Senayan Hall. According to Java Jazz chairman Peter F Gontha, the festival aims to cater to the younger generation that lean toward music genres such as R&B, hip hop, rap and soul. The two-day festival, from Oct. 17 to 18, will feature international artists such as Ashanti, Rahsaan Patterson, Blackilicious and Ako ...
