As first reported in the New York Daily News today, Fossella has hired the very same gumshoes who once worked for the likes of O.J. Simpson, Patty Hearst and mafia boss John Gotti. The... ... Vito Fossella, Staten Island’s beloved congressman, won America’s heart with his drunk driving, mistress-having, love-child-fathering ways. Of course, such a free spirit could not stay in Congress so he planned not to run for re-election. The Staten Island Republican Party searched and searched for somebody to run for Fossella’s spot, and all these people said, [...] ... Source: www.tblog.com --- 36 days ago

It's been six weeks since scandal-plagued Rep. Staten Island GOP Chairman John Friscia is working the phones this morning in an attempt to get all interested parties together to agree on a 13th CD candidate by June 10th. "I have no name for you just yet," said Friscia, whose plans are to file the roughly 1,550 signatures gathered for Frank Powers before he died last month. Asked whether his organization might support former Assemblyman Robert Straniere, who is circulating petitions on his own, Friscia replied: "I'm not saying that we are, and I'm not saying we're not going to." Friscia also seemed unconcerned about former Staten Island Borough President Guy Molinari's anger over what he sees as a lack of leadership in trying to settle on a candidate to replace Rep. Vito Fossella and Molinari's subsequent threat to challenge Friscia for the chairmanship next year. "We had a conversation last Thursday," Friscia said. "He had a very strong opinion about the things I should be doing, and I advised him he and I would differ on his opinion." "...Let me put it this way," Friscia continued. "I don't want to insult him by saying I'm not concerned. People are frustrated. People are upset. People say things in the heat of the moment...I'd like to think once we have a candidate he will be supportive of that candidate." The Staten Island Advance's Tom Wrobleski reports Brooklyn Republicans are collecting names for Conservative Paul Atanasio, whom the borough GOP organization endorsed first ... Democrat Dan Maffei, who is making his second attempt at winning the 25th CD seat, is up on the air with his first TV ad - a spot his campaign says is also the first of any 2008 House Democratic candidate. (Not having paid all that much attention to races outside of New York, I'm going to have to take their word on that one). A Syracuse native and former aide to Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan and Bill Bradley, Maffei lost to GOP Rep. Jim Walsh in 2006 by just under 4,000 votes. This time around, Walsh isn't seeking re-election (he's one of three incumbent New York House Republicans retiring this year, along with Vito Fossella and Tom Reynolds). After Walsh announced he wouldn't run again, there was a brief flurry of activity during which it was unclear whether some other Democrat, (most likely Syracuse Mayor Matt Driscoll) might challenge Maffei. But Driscoll decided not to run, and the party is backing Maffei, who will face former GOP Onondaga County Legislator Dale Sweetland (who also emerged from a field of possible primary challengers) in the general election. Maffei's campaign also outlined its fund-raising totals to date: $1.3 million through June 30, some $470,000 from April 1 to the end of last month, and roughly $950,000 cash on hand. ...
