In June, Apple's market share for Mac OS X hit 7.94 percent, according to Net Applications . At its current growth rate of 0.18 percent per month , this means that the Mac should claim 8 percent of the global desktop operating system market by the end of July. Linux, while still holding a tiny 0.8 percent share, is also rising. The only major desktop OS to decline? Windows. In fact, as the Inquirer notes , while the Mac is up 32 percent, Windows XP actually declined a full percentage point while Vista scraped together a measly 2.56 percent. Overall? Windows was down 2.45 percent. Mac Sales are outpacing PC Sales at 3.5 times faster rate . Two big questions are looming: At what point will the momentum accelerate even faster? In other words, what's the tipping point for Mac adoption? Is Apple set up to handle this success? Does it want it? ... ...

In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz (blessed folk that they are for bringing this to our attention), Microsoft Game Studios' protocol for releasing games was officially revealed. Inquiry into the six month delay of Mass Effect 's inevitable release to the PC unearthed that Microsoft's premier game studio was purposely delaying PC versions so that hardcore PC gamers would buy an Xbox 360 instead. Business development manager Peter Zetterberg of Microsoft Game Studios Europe takes it away: On a global scale the Windows Vista business is as important as our Xbox 360 business. But in Germany for example, we want more gamers to buy our Xbox 360. If we launch a game that is on 360 and PC simultaneously, we basically shoot ourselves in the foot by allowing the German market to choose to play the PC version - because they are more likely to buy [a PC version] than spend their money on the Xbox 360. If that statement is accurate, then Microsoft is purposely delaying the release of PC games just so they could sell more Xbox 360s. But why would they attempt that stunt in what the gaming community would call the core of PC gaming? And moreover, isn't that a step backwards for promoting the PC game? Zetterberg claims that they would have more game Sales on the PC than on the Xbox 360 because the user base of the PC would rather pick up the game on the same platform instead of getting Microsoft's next generation console. He said: On a globa ...

Today, we bid adieu to Windows XP. Despite an outpouring of demand -- including more than 210,000 people who signed InfoWorld's "Save XP" petition , Microsoft held firm and yesterday discontinued Sales of XP in most cases. Sure, any copies of XP in use will continue to run, so the venerable operating system isn't leaving us entirely. And enterprises, small businesses, and some consumers will still be able to install XP as a "downgrade" to Windows Vista Business or Ultimate. And until Feb. 1, 2009, system builders will be able to install XP on "white box" PCs they assemble, which also ironically includes Apple Macs that are bundled with Parallels Desktop or VMware Fusion by resellers such as MacMall and CDW. Finally, low-cost, low-power desktops and laptops such as the Asus Eee PC can ship with Windows XP until 2010. But it is the end of an era nonetheless. [ Can your PC run Windows 7 when it ships in early 2010? Find out with the InfoWorld Windows Sentinel tool's new Windows 7 compatibility checker . ] In response to XP's passing, several InfoWorld editors and contributors shared their memories of XP. We encourage you to add your own remembrance in our comments section. [ Continue reading A requiem for Windows XP ] ...

Microsoft plans to end most Sales of Windows XP on June 30, despite a deep reluctance by many business and individuals about moving to Vista. InfoWorld believes such an expensive, time-consuming shift with problematic benefits should not be forced on Windows users, so we have decided to rally XP users to demand that XP be kept available. Gino Lattarulo submits: The fact that Microsoft (MSFT) stock has been a bollinger band traders dream for the last six years is no fluke. People have been waiting for the XP Killer Windows Vista to come out for some time. Now it is out and Microsoft is still trading in the same channel. Oh, wait, it did poke it's head above 30 for a time when there was talk of a Yahoo (YHOO) buyout. From a Sales standpoint Vista has been a flop. From a personal perspective I can see why. It's terribly slow, the security settings are so restrictive to non- administrator accounts that the average user has a lot of difficulty using them. People are purchasing Vista machines and putting XP on them, myself included. Sure, the GUI is nice and pretty and it seems to allow basic users without networking experience to map a drive with relative ease but does that make it worth the five plus year wait? Filed under: Windows , Microsoft July 1 will go down in history as the day that major PC manufactures can no longer sell Windows XP preinstalled. This news hasn't gone unnoticed; InfoWorld created a petition to save the aging OS. The question is why? Truth of the matter is that there are millions of reasons why one would want to stay with XP just like there are good reasons to upgrade to Vista. Each of them have their merits and it would be pointless to try to disprove any one of them. But what's going to happen when its time to get another computer and the only option is Vista? Is the lack of an XP option enough to sway you to Ubuntu or OS X? According to Microsoft Sales of Vista have reached 140 million copies world wide so it doesn't appear that most computer buyers mind upgrading to Vista. But for those die hard XP users out there what are you going to do? The Grim Reaper has come for your OS. Read  |  Permalink  |  Email this  |  Comments ...

An era ended Monday. The first day of Steve Ballmer's occupation of the corner office at Microsoft's headquarters in Redmond, WA., also marked the last day for Windows XP. June 30 was the "end of Sales" deadline for the venerable version of the Windows operating system, which Microsoft is trying to replace with Windows Vista. But in a letter to customers, Bill Veghte, a senior vice president at Microsoft, emphasized three options for customers who "need" Windows XP on new boxes. First and foremost are the so-called "downgrade rights" available to Vista Business and Vista Ultimate customers. In addition, business customers that license Windows through Microsoft's volume licensing programs can get downgrade rights. Downgrade Rights Computer sellers like Dell, Hewlett Packard and Lenovo are offering downgrade rights on their PCs. "This is a great value because it lets you use Windows XP on new PCs today if you need it, and then make the move to take advantage of the additional capabilities of Windows Vista when you are ready, without having to pay for an upgrade," Veghte wrote. The problem for Microsoft is that many enterprises will never be ready, given the concerns businesses have with the stability and reliability of Vista, plus the fact that much of the hardware that businesses own need upgrades to run Vista. The opposition to Vista fueled a campaign to get Microsoft to extend XP Sales. At InfoWorld, Executive Editor Galen Gruman crea ...

Filed under: Other issues , Consumer experience , Competitive strategy , Microsoft (MSFT) , Apple Inc (AAPL) On June 30, 2008, the last PCs with Windows XP were sold (theoretically) and Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT ) went hard on Vista, its less than celebrated operating system. I was one of the hold outs, opting to buy my laptop with Windows XP last year even though Vista was being touted as the latest and greatest system. Today, I am sure the remaining XP devices are going for a premium. What does this mean for the future of PC Sales? I think there will be some measure of reduced PC Sales in the short run just because the economy is already suffering and consumers and businesses are looking to stretch their devalued dollars. It also means that some people that do not want the burdensome Vista system and all the baggage that goes along with it will be opting for Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL ) Macs. There are many people like me who have been weighing the switch to a Mac for a while. The rest of my household has made the switch (4 Macs, 1 PC) and I did consider this prior to my last purchase. I may swing the other way next time. For other PC users who remain satisfied with XP, they may not only think to stretch their dollars, but try and hang onto their PCs longer until the value proposition for Vista becomes more convincing. I can always add more memory or speed to my existing computer. I do not know what the trade-off is for Microsoft. It would mak ...
