Before the 2008 General Assembly left town Friday, lawmakers continued their commitment to preserving green space here. They deserve credit for keeping the state's financial resources behind an admirable effort to save a million acres within a decade. That campaign isn't likely to succeed, based on high land costs and rapid development. But it pushes the state closer to the long-term goal and serves as a Model for private conservation efforts as well. The new state budget, signed last week by Gov. Mike Easley, provides $55 million in new conservation spending for four initiatives to preserve land and protect water and air quality. That sum includes $50 million in certificate of participation bonds for the N.C. Parks and Recreation Trust Fund and the N.C. Natural Heritage Trust Fund. It provides $4 million for the Agricultural Development and Farmland Preservation Trust Fund and $1 million for the N.C. Community Development Initiative. Land for Tomorrow, a statewide coalition supporting land preservation, said the money, in addition to $100 million already in the budget for the Visionary Clean Water Management Trust Fund, is an important factor in keeping the state green. “Legislative support for conservation funding is essential to sustaining our family farms, working forests, state parks and scenic vistas, which protect our natural heritage,” said Reid Wilson of the Conservation Trust of North Carolina. It may look like the Batmobile, but rest assured we're not promoting the new movie. This is Gina (the 2008 BMW Gina Light Visionary Model, designed by the controversial Chris Bangle), a statement of where BMW might head in the future - a concept car with a big vision. It's made of a metallic fabric that flexes and bends into different shapes. Gina stands for 'Geometry and Functions in "N" (or Infinite) Adaptations'. And what's interesting about Gina is that it really challenges our preconceptions about cars. Its creators ask, 'Does a car roof really have to rest on pillars and be bordered by windows? Do all functions have to be visible at all times, even when they are not needed? How many personalization options does my car offer? Are there any possible alternatives to the rigid body shell made of steel or plastic?' Paris houseboat amphicar Paris Houseboat Rental This is the way to live in Paris - aboard your converted peniche houseboat barge with your Amphicar (amphibious car) lashed to the deck. The peniche and amphicar is owned by Undersea Architect and Visionary Jacques Rougerie. Its a 1964 Model of the famous German marque - the Amphicar was the only amphibious mass-produced automobile. Its powered by the 1147 cc engine from the British Triumph Herald 1200 - "state of the art" in 1961. The Amphicar can steam at 7 knots in the water and 70 mph (113 km/h) on land. The Amphicar is steered with the front wheels - both in the water and on land. 3,878 vehicles were built before the company went belly up. Concourse vehicles are fetching above $115K these days. This particular car was restored here in France, with all the parts imported from the U.S. BTW there lots of these peniche houseboat barges moored along the Seine - in various states of repair. A good one in a prime position can set you back a million dollars. My OC friends from RVCA have been in and out of town for the past few weeks, and I'm so excited that they are bringing their amazing energy and fun to our coast. Last week Pat Tenore came by for some take out dinner with his friend, artist David Cho . Pat is the Visionary co founder of the RVCA brand. He is not only an artist himself, but an art fanatic and enthusiast and a huge supporter who puts his money where his mouth is, sponsoring artists, musicians, filmmakers in the same way other brands sponsor sports figures. He was in town to meet up with Opening Ceremony , as he's producing a line with Model and smart left coast skater girl Erin Wasson , and will sell the stuff there -- which is RVCA's first break into "fashion." Tenore just came off of a huge show he curated consisting of Barry McGee colab Cinelli bikes which he sold in his San Francisco shop, along with one of a kind bikes designed by every artist, from KAWS to Phil Frost . ...
