Free Virtualisation tool can give your Mac multiple personalities Although Virtualisation and emulation technologies have been around for decades in the world of big iron mainframes, it’s only in the last year or so that Virtualisation is starting to appear on desktop machines. The advantages are obvious. With a Virtualisation shell you can multiboot OS X, Windows, Linux, other Unix variants, and even DOS all on the same machine. This has obvious curiosity value, but the practical applications shouldn’t be dismissed. ...

Martin Courtney, Server Virtualisation, which allows multiple virtual machines to run separately on a single physical computer system, has become a priority for many IT departments, thanks to the multitude of benefits its supporters say it delivers. But IT chiefs considering deploying the technology need to be aware of how different priorities can affect their implementation plans. Consolidation is the most common driver for adopting server Virtualisation, says Cris Colfescu, consultant at The Project Network [http://www.project-network.com/ec/Folders/PreviewDoc.asp?id=63] The Project Network, a firm specialising in delivering Virtualisation and project management advice. “Some people think they will cut costs in terms of energy consumption and rack space leasing, some are thinking about reduced hardware maintenance costs and others are interested in reducing their carbon footprint,” says Colfescu. Earlier this year UK charity Comic Relief [http://www.comicrelief.com/] Comic Relief implemented a virtual server and storage environment designed to do just that. It cut the number of physical servers it was running by 20 per cent, helping the charity to meet its environmental commitments by reducing the power consumption of both physical machines and the air conditioning systems needed to cool them. “We used to have 20 servers, we now have 16 running virtual machines,” says John Thompson, Comic Relief’s head of IT. Simon Evans is dire ...

Run Windows on a Mac without rebooting? VMWare say you can. Virtualisation is lining up to be the next big thing, and VMWare is trying to place itself as the most flexible option for running multiple operating systems at the same time. The competition is already well developed. Parallels Desktop has been available almost since the first Intel Macs appeared, and Sun’s VirtualBox has become the go-to app for developers who want a quick check of compatibility between platforms. ...

There are 1 replies, with the last one on 10/07/2008 at 09:32:36 AM by Jazzy Quote: Hi Micheal, I've done a lot of Exchange 2007 migrations these days and only 5% was on physical hardware. All our customers are running VMware ESX and Exchange runs just fine on this platform. Did an install on Hyper-V too but it doesn't really matter with virtualization solution you use. By the way, you won't get "better" results in performance. Instead you have to keep in mind that VMware or Hyper-V gives a performance penalty of, let's say, 5-10%. But it will give you all the advantages of Virtualisation, like hardware independence, flexibility, new disaster recovery scenarios, etcetera. A migration to a single box Exchange 2007 server is the most simple one. Basically you have to add the new server in the existing Exchange org, enable public folder replication, move the mailboxes and remove the old server. This is a good starting point to read: http://technet.microsoft.com/nl-nl/library/aa997617 (en-us,EXCHG.80).aspx ...
