Microsoft is permitting end users of Virtual Earth that are not happy with the content offered via the service to introduce patches with imagery. The Redmond company is constantly introducing double digit Terabytes imagery updates to Virtual Earth, but it is simply not enough, and entire areas of the world are covered only superficially, without allowing for an in-depth perspective. However, as far as Ortho imagery is concerned, Microsoft pointed to a third-party capable of enriching not only vi... ...

Live Labs has released Photosynth , the 3D-esque photo collection viewer that it first tech-previewed in 2006 ( Radar post ). With this release any Vista or XP user running FireFox or IE can create, view, and share Synths (Mac support is planned). I suggest exploring the Synths. There are some amazing ones available like Smith Tower in Seattle (home to the Photosynth team), Macchu Picchu and even scenes from World of Warcraft . There are several controls and views associated with Synths. The 3D leaf brings you to a view where you zoom through the Synth either by clicking them or with arrows at the edges (shown above). In this view you will occasionally see a ring appear you can use that to rotate that view. From here you can also see the point cloud of images, which on quality Synths will reconstruct the original structure (to get this view use the Crtl button). The +/- controls will advance you though the pics. The play button will move through the photos in chronological order in a timed fashion (you can also use "." to advance one at a time, use ";" to go backwards). The dotted leaf takes you to the photview which let's you zoom in on any individual photo and really take advantage of the Seadragon image streaming technology (show above). You'll have to download some code from Photosynth to view and create Synths. The install includes an ActiveX control for viewing in IE, a Firefox extension and the Synth creation software. After get ...

Earlier this week Microsoft announced that it is making some of the imagery used in its Virtual Earth platform available for purchase (more on Virtual Earth in our VE SDK profile ). The imagery, taken with Microsoft's proprietary UltraCam shown below is available for approximately 200 cities (in high resolution and averaging less than two years old). ...

What would happen if there was an Earthquake? How many buildings and bridges will be damaged and how many casualties to expect? All this can be estimated a bit easier now with InLET , a web based GIS application which uses Microsoft Virtual Earth . Chris Pendleton writes: Earthquake damage assessment just got a little easier. In the spirit of the close of the ESRI User Conference , I figured it was appropriate to post a little something about a GIS application using Microsoft Virtual Earth - enter Inlet (Internet-based Loss Estimation Tool) - okay, my post name is unoriginal. Inlet is a web-based loss estimation and transportation modeling platform used to evaluate whether Information Technology (IT) solutions can reduce the impacts of disasters on transportation systems. According to the site , "INLET currently incorporates GIS, a risk model, and a transportation model to provide online estimates for building damage, transportation impacts, and casualties. Additional features include a demonstration of a model simulating the effect of IT on evacuation routing. Specifically, the model illustrates how awareness of a disaster scenario and familiarity with routing alternatives can impact traffic congestion and evacuation time." On his blog Chris demonstrates how this works by blowing up Santa Clarita CA , where he went to High School. Rough time at school I guess… The site currently only works for California. Besides custom scenarios ...

Where's the street map of the Republic of Georgia? Some media outlets are crying foul as Google scrambles to explain why they did not have any maps of the war-torn region. You can get satellite images for sure but the road detail is vacant. So, don't go searching for detail around Tbilisi or Gori. Miguel Helft, writing in the New York Times , interviews folks at Google who say simply that they never had very good coverage in this region and did not intentionally remove any data. Not so for Yahoo Maps. Road data on Yahoo does exist but looks no better than the old 1:100,000 Defence Mapping Agency (now NGA) maps so it, too, is somewhat incomplete. Zooming to street level will show that neither Yahoo nor Google has any coverage. But the winner is Microsoft Virtual Earth . Now, whether this was done recently, only they know for sure, but the road detail is excellent. Perhaps folks from the VE group can chime in here. I would not put this all on Google, Yahoo or Microsoft. Politically sensitive regions have little detail. Take the disputed region of Kashmir. It has great satellite imagery (almost too good) but no road data. And the imagery is spotty. For an interesting example, use this link to a KMZ file of Skardu, a small town in Pakistan, very close to the border with India. The imagery is extraordinary but don't pan away too far or you will lose the higher resolution image. ...

Virtual Earth 3D  is the future. I haven't been so impressed or had more fun with a software application in a long time. Seriously. Not only can you zoom in fly down the street you live on- but you can do a search and find all the cool used record stores in your neighborhood. This team has created the most photo-realistic search tool out there and the proof is obvious. Check out how seamlessly you can zoom in and out of these Virtual cities and you can't help but notice the lack of "grey boxes" you may find instead of actual buildings- like you would see in some other 3d search engines ;P Plus Stephen Lawler talks a little about how this was done and what to expect from it in the future...  Check out Channel 9's coverage of Virtual Earth 3D ...

Windows Virtual Earth evangelist Chris Pendleton writes on his blog about the availability of display advertising on Live Search Maps. Known as “highlighted listings,” this is similar to the mapvertising Google Maps offers. Both place icons on map locations — sort of a premium placement beyond an organic map listing. Icons also show up whenever users [...] ...

At the recent Re-MIX 08 conference in Melbourne, one of the highlights of the day (for me) was to see the new ASP.NET controls for Virtual Earth. Awesome to have Avi joining our team here at Microsoft. he’s got a pretty detailed post on his RealityPrime blog talking about his latest career change. here’s an excerpt - In this current job search, one of the big companies actually surprised and impressed me, not only in their offer, but throughout the process, the people and professionalism. The two days of on-site interviews weren’t as much about testing my coding skills as they were about vision, work styles, and that ever-elusive "fit." Turns out, I actually had fun. And in the end, my bosses-to-be offered exactly the kind of role I wanted with the freedom to define it myself — new, challenging, and some potentially very big wins on the horizon, straddling both R&D and productization with the goal of adding value wherever I can Avi has contributed in big ways to some pretty well known software projects like Keyhole and Second Life. I’m looking forward to seeing what he sinks his teeth into next. ...
