It’s been a couple weeks but… it took that long to recoup. On 8/9/08 and 8/10/08 Virgin Mobile and the concert wizards of I.M.P. put on a mammoth music Festival called the Virgin Mobile Festival in Baltimore, MD at Pimlico Race Track (home of The Preakness). MixMatchMusic was on site in full force to participate [...] ... Source: gracenotesnyc.com --- 10 days ago
Over the weekend, Chris, David, my dad, and I checked out the Virgin Mobile Festival at the Pimlimco Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. The awesome people at buzzd.com hooked me up with four two-day Festival passes and my dad was in town, so I figured it would be fun to take a road trip. [...] ... "Crushcrushcrush!!!" (Sarah L. Voisin/TWP) Malitz and I went to Baltimore last weekend, and all you got was this lousy story. (Well that and all these blog posts.) Some more critical reportage from the front lines... The Baltimore Sun's Rashod D. Ollison and Sam Sessa (correctly) call it for Kanye after going retro-crazy on Day 1. Sessa also ponders the Festival's booking philosophy - and argues that there should be a small stage for Baltimore bands. (Producer Fritz wondered yesterday why there wasn't a K-Swift memorial.) USA Today offers a charticle that names Jack Johnson as one of the musical highlights. Huh. Melissa Ruggieri of the Richmond Times-Dispatch wasn't down with Lil Wayne's "sophomoric ramblings" - but she just lurved the Silver Beats and Sharon Jones. Sonny Bunch of the Washington Times says Bloc Party "killed." And finally, one of the photo editors at Eparsa is drooling over Duffy's red dress. ... Source: blog.washingtonpost.com --- 28 days ago
Two out of three Posties think "Visions of Johanna" is the (soy) bomb. In advance of Bobby Z's Virgin Mobile Festival performance on Sunday, Malitz and I asked various Posties (including each other) to put together annotated lists of their Top 5 Dylan songs. * Amy Argetsinger, Reliable Source columnist, avowed Dylan fanatic My five favorite Dylan songs? I basically sit around all day waiting for someone to ask me this! 1. "Visions of Johanna." How could Dylan, not yet 25, have created an epic that gazes so piercingly on my life now and the lives of my friends and perhaps the entire human condition? Just guessing, anyway - I still don't have enough life experience to comprehend the last few verses. Maybe when I'm 60. From "Blonde on Blonde," my best friend/therapist when I was 25. 2. "I Don't Believe You." Not the original folkie version; the wild, wailing, ... Source: blog.washingtonpost.com --- 27 days ago
Shudder To Think, back for some more. If Shudder To Think doesn't exactly fit in with this year's Virgin Mobile Festival lineup, it's nothing new for the just-reunited band. They've made a career of being outcasts, whether it was as the avant-pop band on D.C. punk label Dischord or as glammed-up rockers during the grunge boom. I got singer/guitarist Craig Wedren on the phone a few days ago and let me tell you, that guy is fun to talk to. And I'm not just saying that because he actually wanted to hear my half-baked indie-rock reunion theories. Shudder to Think performs Sunday from 1:05 to 1:55. As if you needed another reminder, we will be blogging live from Pimlico all weekend. Check back often. So I guess you wanted to get in on this whole reunion thing, huh? Yeah, man, had to do it! Malitz and I scoured the discographies of each band in the VFest lineup to come up with the 10 albums that belong in your collection. We debated doing 11, just to get Lil Wayne's "Da Drought 3" onto the list; but there's no symmetry to that number. And yes, there was a one-album-per-artist limit. That's Dylan's fault. The albums are listed in chronological order. Sort of: The Chuck Berry comp was released in 1982, but its songs came out decades earlier, during rock-and-roll's formative years. (Obligatory programming reminder: We'll be live-blogging from Pimlico Race Course all weekend. Check in often on Saturday and Sunday for updates.) Chuck Berry - "The Great Twenty-Eight" Everybody always talks about Berry's guitar work - and not without reason, as his archetypal double-string licks fill more than a few pages in the rock-and-roll playbook. But Berry was also the first truly great rock-and-roll songwriter, an ... Source: blog.washingtonpost.com --- 28 days ago
He whistles, plays violin, plays glockenspiel ... and this Bird can sing. Andrew Bird is just another one of those world-class whistling, sometimes glockenspieling former child prodigy violinists-turned-chamber pop stars. Seriously, the dude whistles like Brad Ziegler gets double plays. It's like he's hiding a theremin in his mouth. (Video proof below.) He's an interesting choice for a show the size of Virgin Mobile Festival. His long and winding songs are all about subtlety. On a day that includes performances by Kanye West, the Stooges, Nine Inch Nails, Lil Wayne and Stone Temple Pilots, Bird will certainly stick out. After I saw you last May at the 9:30 club, I swore the next time you were in town it would be at a seated theater. But instead it's at a race track playing before Lil Wayne and Kanye West. How do you prepare for these big shows? It's definitely ... Source: blog.washingtonpost.com --- 28 days ago

"Still trying to figure out how I wasn't the first pick..." In which Malitz and I finally figure out how to move our shared fantasy-baseball obsession into the music space. The draft to determine our live-blogging assignments took place this afternoon via IM. (Note that most of the undrafted acts on the VMoFest schedule will be covered in This Very Space by the guy who didn't make the pick for that time slot. Unless we're at the batting cages.) Malitz: You can have first pick. du Lac: Because I'm older, or because you feel sorry for me for having to write the Style story for Monday? Malitz: A little of both, plus I think you've got a little Dave Littlefield in you. du Lac: Hey, don't forget that you don't need to waste a pick on the Stooges. I'll be in the media tent/penthouse suite then, enjoying the air ... Source: blog.washingtonpost.com --- 25 days ago

As we noted in our live review from earlier this week, Bloc Party seems reenergized by their new material, like new single "Mercury." And while that was truly a set highlight during their afternoon romp on Virgin Mobile Festival's South Stage, Silent Alarm favorites carried the day, particularly a rousing version of "Like Eating Glass." Watch Kele Okereke, Russell Lissack, Matt Tong, and fill-in bassist Daniel Lindegren (taking Gordon Moakes' spot while he awaits the birth of his first child in London) surge through the classic. ...
