LONDON (MarketWatch) -- British Sky Broadcasting PLC's (BSY.LN) basic channels could return to Virgin Media by early 2009, the Daily Telegraph reports, citing sources at Media buying agencies. Sky One, Sky News and three other channels were withdrawn from Virgin early last year which led to Virgin customers moving to Sky. Meanwhile, two years ago, Sky slashed the fee it pays to carry Virgin's channels. The broadcasters want a deal before Virgin's carriage deal expires in January, the report says. ...

It has not taken long for the deal between the Carphone Warehouse and Virgin Media to begin to fall in line with the other broadband providers, by offering a laptop in conjunction with their broadband offering. However this deal is down to the Carphone Warehouse as Virgin do not offer such sweeteners to their new customers who sign up for broadband directly with them. New customers going into the Carphone Warehouse store will get a Toshiba Satellite L300 laptop worth £440, when they sign up for the Virgin Media triple play XL package which costs £49 per month, but rises to £56 per month after six months. The triple play package includes up to 20 Mbps XL Broadband, XL TV and XL Phone services. There could some additional costs attached to this deal, of around £65 for delivery and installation, although it is not too clear how this charge is applied. ...

Could it be true that Virgin Media are about to announce a milestone in UK broadband history, by offering their customers the chance to sign up for broadband with speeds up to 50 Mbps? Within the industry there are plenty of rumours circulating that Virgin Media have made some significant improvements to their network and are on the verge of turning the UK marketplace on its head by offering this service. We mentioned earlier that there have been deals done with the Carphone Warehouse and already there is a new free laptop deal to compete with the other providers. However, offering such a great improvement in speed would really begin to put pressure on the other broadband providers such BT and Be Broadband, especially as Virgin Media can also offer bundled services too. ...

In a deal between the two companies, Virgin Media are set to become the lead broadband supplier for the Carphone Warehouse as from the beginning of October. The agreement will see the Virgin Media broadband packages take the lead in the Carphone Warehouse broadband offerings, where they currently sell around two thousand five hundred fixed line broadband connections per month across the board. However, Virgin Media are looking at a modest four hundred per month. Carphone Warehouse will be offering their customers, as from today, a Virgin Media broadband package that includes XXL Broadband, XL Phone and XL TV Channels. This will also come with a free laptop all for £49.99 per month. ...
