“Being from Iowa, I’m a little biased,” said Iowa native and current Independence resident Donald Minjire. Minjire joined a crowd of about 50 Sunday at a picnic hosted by former Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack at McCoy Park. Vilsack was here to speak on behalf of Democratic Presidential nominee Barack Obama. “I’ve seen the governor many, many times and I’m invigorated that he is here in support of Barack Obama. It’s good to see him supporting Obama.” Vilsack’s Labor BBQ and Canvass Kickoff here was part of his trip through rural and suburban Missouri to highlight the differences between Obama’s health care plan and Arizona Sen. John McCain’s proposal. McCain is, of course, Obama’s Republican opponent in November’s general election. “Senator McCain said he has a (health care) plan that would provide $5,000 in tax relief,” Vilsack said to a small spattering of boos directed at the mention of McCain. “But what he has failed to mention is that he wants to tax (employer-provided) health care benefits. That would mean 20 million people would lose their health care insurance because insurance carriers would dump them, and they wouldn’t be able to afford the health coverage.” Vilsack, who governed neighboring Iowa for eight years, traveled to St. Joseph after leaving Independence to talk about Obama’s health care plan. Democrat Tom Vilsack appeared on Hannity & Colmes last night (9/30/08) to discuss Barack Obama's position on the bailout mess. Sean Hannity grew agitated and irritable as Vilsack refused to fall for Hannity's gotcha questions and tried to start a meaningful discussion beyond “the blame game.” “This is pathetic,” Hannity seethed. Yes, it was. And if Hannity weren't such an intolerant, bullying blowhard, I'd have a lot more sympathy for him. With video. As he grew increasingly frustrated by his inability to dominate and demean Vilsack, Hannity resorted to his distortions du jour: (falsely) accusing Obama of having advisors with ties to Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae. When Vilsack corrected the record, Hannity accused him of “not telling the truth.” Not surprisingly to anyone who follows Hannity, it was he who was not telling the truth. As I have previously written, the Franklin Raines “connection” has been debunked while Jim Johnson's relationship with the Obama campaign was brief, was limited to helping vet a vice presidential candidate and ended in June. ANY avid politico probably knows that John Kennedy was the last sitting senator elected to the White House. Since 1960, every president has been either a governor or the vice-president. This year, of course, that string will be broken, as both John McCain and Barack Obama have offices on the north side of the Capitol (where senators toil away). This election could turn out to be a one-off, but as it is Monday and all, I wonder if executives haven't lost some lustre. As my colleague pointed out , executive experience still has its fans, but it isn't clear that governors do. After all, Mitt Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts, ran largely as a businessman and Mike Huckabee, the former governor of Arkansas, ran largely as Mr Rogers. Bill Richardson, the former governor of New Mexico, and Tom Vilsack, the former governor of Iowa, were the exceptions. But Mr Vilsack didn't make it as far as his home-state caucus. Mr Richardson fared a little better, but was never really a factor in the race. Writing from California where the legislature, through admirable party discipline, missed the constitutional deadline for a budget by almost three months, I find myself wondering if state legislators are disqualifying state governors from higher office.
