Antonio Villaraigosa just might score a fundraising three-peat this week –- at least when it comes to some delicate healthcare politics in the San Fernando Valley. Just as a Superior Court judge is taking aim at a $180-million hospital expansion project in Mission Hills, L.A.'s mayor held three different fundraisers for his reelection campaign involving people on each side of the hospital fight. The mayor appeared Friday at an event hosted by Mayer Brown LLC, the law firm that represents Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in its effort to complete a 101-bed expansion. He went Sunday to a fundraiser hosted in part by members of the Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy, a pro-labor group that waged an active campaign against the expansion, arguing that it needs more review. And today, Villaraigosa is scheduled to appear for a fundraiser hosted at the offices of the powerful Los Angeles Federation of Labor. That group’s executive secretary-treasurer, Maria Elena Durazo, lobbied council members last year to reject the hospital expansion and force it to complete more extensive environmental review. Durazo is seen as an ally to Service Employees International Union, which represents healthcare workers and played a major role in the challenge to the hospital expansion. All these events are leading up to Thursday, when Superior Court Judge Thomas I. McKnew is expected to make final his decision on the hospital project. McKnew dropped ... There's an interesting bet brewing over the Dodgers-Cubs playoff series, with Chicago's mayor, Richard Daley, offering a goodie bag of Chicago's food and drinks and sporting goods should the Cubs lose. Now comes word that L.A.'s mayor, Antonio Villaraigosa has accepted the bet -- and offered much higher stakes: “If the Dodgers win, Los Angeles gets Chicago’s 2016 Olympic bid,” Villaraigosa said. “If the Cubs win, Chicago can take back Sam Zell.” Wait -- there's more. "It would be a tremendous blow to the City of Los Angeles to lose such a great corporate citizen such as Mr. Zell," Villaraigosa said. "So in unlikely event that the Dodgers lose, I’d insist that as a consolation he sell the L.A. Times back to an L.A. owner before heading back to Chicago.” At the time of this writing: Cubs 2, Dodgers zip. Who are you rooting for now? -- Veronique de Turenne Photo: EPA ... On the eve of the historic referendum on gay marriage in California, opponents of the proposed marriage ban today turned to Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa to make their closing arguments. Villaraigosa's starring role comes after supporters of Proposition 8 made San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom the face of their campaign to end gay marriage in the state. Both mayors have been mentioned as possible Democratic candidates for governor in 2010. But Villaraigosa was chosen by the "No on 8" campaign to make more than a dozen radio and television appearances today with stations around the state. Like Newsom, Villaraigosa has long been an ally of gay causes; as speaker of the Assembly in the late 1990s, he ushered through a package of gay rights bills. But Newsom, who as mayor ordered the San Francisco officials to issue marriage licenses to gays, has been targeted in ads by the "Yes on 8" campaign. In one TV ad he is seen gloating, after the state Supreme Court overturned a 2000 voter-imposed ban gay marriages: "The door is wide-open now. . . . It's going to happen whether you like it or not." In a subsequent ad, Newsom was taken to task for officiating the wedding of a lesbian teacher attended by first-grade students. Newsom later said he was unaware the first-graders were taken out of class for the event. School officials said the students' parents signed permission slips. But since the faux pas, Newsom has taken a lower-profil ... Source: www.sacbee.com --- 14 days ago

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is a member of President-elect Barack Obama’s transition team. Mayor Villaraigosa will serve on Obama’s economic advisory board. The Mayor told KPCC’s “Patt Morrison” how it felt to stand alongside the president-elect during his first press conference. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa: “Well, you know, it’s was an honor and I pinch my cheek all the time; I have since I got elected to public office. Feel very honored to be able to be here to represent our city and representing cities across the country, and you know whatever input I can give I certainly want to do that, and do it both humbly, but also understanding that we have a unique perspective to share as the second largest city in America.” Mayor Villaraigosa recommended that Obama expand unemployment benefits as a buffer against the effects of joblessness on cities. He noted that unemployment rates are two percentage points higher in the city of Los Angeles than the national average of just over six percent. ... Source: blogs.laweekly.com --- 46 days ago
