Veterans Agent Dick Martin and Town Administrator Rocco Longo are working to form a Vietnam veterans committee to tally all those who left Marshfield to serve in the Vietnam War and place their names on an honor roll. Names of World War II veterans are displayed on an honor roll outside town hall, and Korean War veterans are ready to present designs for an honor roll at special Town Meeting this fall and request Community Preservation Act funds for that purpose. The Korean War committee has been working on the honor roll project since 2003, Martin said, but Vietnam and other Vets do not have their own committees and do not have comprehensive lists of Marshfield residents that served in those wars. Longo asked selectmen Monday to consider appointing a Vietnam committee, which is ready to organize, and allow him to proceed in putting an honor roll starting from Vietnam and continuing through the current wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Longo also asked for the help of anyone who could identify people from Marshfield who left to serve the country. “We do want to reach out and make this inclusive to anyone who wants to help us locate people,” Longo said. Selectmen Chairwoman Katie O’Donnell said a comprehensive honor roll would be valuable to everyone. “I know Dick Martin is a stickler for perfection, so I’m sure it would be well done,” she said. Selectman Michael Maresco said the town needs to make sure no one is left out. “Once we identify ... Source: flindersranges.yourguide.com.au --- 13 days ago

A new study has found Vietnam veterans exposed to defoliant Agent Orange have a considerably greater risk of developing prostate cancer, especially the most aggressive form of the disease. These findings are the first to show a relationship between the now-banned herbicide and this form of cancer. The team collected data on 13,144 Vietnam veterans , including 6,214 men exposed to Agent Orange between 1962-1971. Researchers found twice as many veterans exposed to the herbicide had developed prostate cancer, as opposed to the veterans who had not been exposed. Also, men who were exposed to the chemical were diagnosed with prostate cancer two-and-a-half years earlier than unexposed men and were four times more likely to be diagnosed with metastatic disease, or the spread of the disease to different organs. Agent Orange was one of the "broad-leaf defoliants" used in the Vietnam War to destroy vegetation making the enemy easier to see. It is made of compounds that are known to be contaminated with the dioxin TCDD during production. Between 1962 and 1971, twenty million gallons of the chemical were sprayed contaminating both the ground and soldiers . In 1997, the International Agency on Cancer classified TCDD as a group 1 carcinogen, a classification that also includes arsenic, asbestos and gamma radiation. The study's lead author Dr. Karim Chamie, a resident physician in urology at the University of California, Davis, Department of Urology ...
