According to data from both Chart-Track and ELSPA , UK video game sales have risen over 40 percent year-on-year for the first 6 months of 2008 to 31.3 million units. Revenue increased to GPB 738 million. Wii , Xbox 360, PS3 and Nintendo DS software accounted for GPB 690 million of the total with PC gaming accounting for the rest. The low 3.9 million units sold of PC software represents a 29 percent decline year-on-year from last year. "Games are now one of the most popular pastimes of the British – hence these remarkable figures," said Paul Jackson, director general of ELSPA. "Our gamers are more mature than those of most countries – the average age of a player here is now 33 – and as our core gamers have grown up, so too have the revenues they bring in. Games are also proving themselves to be robustly recession-proof. "Other retailers in the High Street have been struggling this year, but those selling games are not having such a tough time." In my book, there are numerous reasons to support Barack Obama over John McSame McCain. But I want to focus on one issue: Supreme Court Justice nominations. The reason I'm emphasizing this issue is because it could potentially impact the Videogame industry in dramatic ways. The next POTUS will probably nominate up to three new justices on the high court. These justices will interpret our laws for decades to come. I personally support Barack Obama for many reasons, but Supreme Court nominations is right on the top of the list. A while back 1up posted an interesting news article that detailed the campaign contributions of various Videogame designers and industry leaders. I was surprised to see that several game designers donated money to candidates like John McCain, Mike Huckabee, Rudy Giuliani, and Mitt Romney. Don't get me wrong, I'm not criticizing these individuals for supporting Republicans, but it does seem like they're almost betting against themselves. I commented on the article by stating, "Romney got donations? That doesn't make any sense. After all, Romney essentially wanted to bring America back to the 1950s. Good luck trying to hook up a 360 to a 13-inch B&W Zenith." Obviously my comment was mostly tongue and cheek, but there is some truth to it. After all, Romney made the following statement in December: I want to restore values so children are protected from a societal cesspool of filth, pornography, violence, sex, and per ...

Following hot on the heels of the successes of the Cooking Mama series of games and Nintendo's own recently released DS cookbook, come two announcements from E3 this week that two of the UK's best known celebrity chefs, Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsay, will both be bringing out their own videogames this Christmas. Yes, you read that correctly. Ubisoft has just announced that it will publish Hell's Kitchen: The Video Game in September - on Wii, Nintendo DS, PC and Mac - to "allow players to experience the show's high-pressure kitchen and dining room challenges as a faithfully rendered 3D Gordon Ramsay watches their every move." Gordon Ramsay, without the ******* swearing "I had a great time doing the voice for my own animation," said Gordon Ramsay. "Being in a video game is a new experience for me and I'm very pleased with the results." Notice the lack of swearing in the above comment from Ramsay! A Ubisoft rep just informed TechRadar that - somewhat ironically - the game is to be rated 12+ and that there will be no actual swearing in Ramsay's game with any rude words on screen hidden by an asterisk. Players earn stars to "build their way up from a Single-Star restaurant to a prestigious Five-Star establishment… the pressure builds as customers become increasingly demanding… keep up with the pressure before time is up, or Ramsay loses patience and closes the kitchen." Sweet, Pukka, Lovely Not one to miss out on another bandwagon, At ...
