World J Urol. 2008 Sep 19; Authors: Ramanathan R, Salamanca JI, Mandhani A, Leung RA, Rao SR, Berryhill R, Tewari A OBJECTIVE: 3-Dimensional (3-D) visualization by the surgeon is considered to be one of the major advantages of robotic prostatectomy. We undertook this study to see if passing on this technology to the surgical assistants would improve the efficiency of their assistance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was conducted in consecutive patients undergoing robotic radical prostatectomy by the same team, in one month at our center. A 3-D head mounted device (HMD) was used by the left and/or right assistant. Video recording from these patients were studied by a blinded observer with prior Training in laparoscopic surgery for the efficiency of laparoscopic moves by the two assistants. These moves were scored on a point scoring system from 0 to 100 with 100 signifying the best possible performance. RESULTS: After exclusions, 26 videos were available for Review. Each patient had a right and left-sided assistant. The right-sided assistant had prior experience in Laparoscopic Urology, and the left-sided assistant had a relatively limited laparoscopic experience. The aim of this Review was to determine whether virtual reality (VR) Training can supplement and/or replace conventional laparoscopic Training in surgical trainees with limited or no laparoscopic experience. METHODS: Randomized clinical trials addressing this issue were identified from The Cochrane Library trials register, Medline, Embase, Science Citation Index Expanded, grey literature and reference lists. Standardized mean difference was calculated with 95 per cent confidence intervals based on available case analysis. RESULTS: Twenty-three trials (mostly with a high risk of bias) involving 622 participants were included in this Review. In trainees without surgical experience, VR Training decreased the time taken to complete a task, increased accuracy and decreased errors compared with no Training. In the same participants, VR Training was more accurate than Video trainer (VT) Training. In participants with limited laparoscopic experience, VR Training resulted in a greater reduction in operating time, error and unnecessary movements than standard laparoscopic Training. The Independent Review Commission on Jails met this morning, to release its final report, a 30-page document that includes findings and recommendations for the Hillsborough County jails. Following the meeting, videographers from local TV news stations swarmed to get footage of the report, which Fox 13 anchor Laura Moody flipped through so they could get their shot. That was the message sent this morning by the Independent Review Commission on Hillsborough County Jails, during its final meeting. Sheriff David Gee formed the 11-member panel in February in response to widespread outrage prompted by a Video of a detention deputy dumping a quadriplegic from his wheelchair. While the commission made 40 recommendations to Sheriff David Gee about employee Training, inmate communication and grievances and other management issues, chairman James Sewell said the group's research indicated, "the Hillsborough County jail system is one of the strongest in the country." "Bad things can happen in good places," Sewell said.What happened to inmate Brian Sterner in January, Sewell said, was an aberration, and the disciplinary action taken by the department against involved employees was appropriate. The human rights organization Amnesty International has issued a statement describing the use of force against protestors at the Republican National Convention (RNC) as "disproportionate." The statement reads: "Amnesty International is concerned by allegations of excessive use of force and mass arrests by police at demonstrations in St. Paul, Minnesota during the Republican National Convention (RNC) from September 1-4, 2008. The human rights organization is calling on the city and county authorities to ensure that all allegations of ill-treatment and other abuses are impartially investigated, with a Review of police tactics and weapons in the policing of demonstrations. The organization's concerns arise from media reports, Video and photographic images which appear to show police officers deploying unnecessary and disproportionate use of non-lethal weapons on non-violent protestors marching through the streets or congregating outside the arena where the Convention was being held.
