Local Veterans reminisced by Lake Hiawatha Friday, in between fishing and barbecuing, at the fourth annual Veterans picnic. Dennis Auger, an organizer of the picnic hosted by Bellingham VFW Post 7272, Disabled American Veterans Chapter 5 of Wrentham and the Vietnam Veterans of Rhode Island, said the Veterans truly enjoy the change of scenery. ``These guys are trapped at the VA,'' he said. ``They really look forward to it and they have a blast.'' Charles Murphy, a naval fighter pilot during World War II, said he and Ted Williams went to the same flight orientation school in preparation for the Korean War. ``He was such a gentleman, he especially loved children,'' Murphy recalled. ``Ted had such great eyesight and coordination.'' Murphy said he was a former Boston firefighter and a former journalist for the Boston Globe. ``Nobody has had a better life than me,'' he said. ``I've had tragedies, do not get me wrong, but I have so much happiness.'' Veteran John Michaelson of North Attleboro was in the 1st Airborne Division for three years, and left the military shortly before the Vietnam War. ``It is really comforting to see civilians treating Veterans so well,'' he said. ``When vets came back from Vietnam, people threw eggs and tomatoes at them.'' A plan to rededicate the artillery piece on the lawn in front of Town Hall on the 80th anniversary of the building's dedication in 1928 has been scrapped. Veterans Services Director Ted Mulvehill had hoped to raise $10,000 by early August to restore the 1917 German Krupp howitzer prior to Veterans Day, which would allow the piece to be rededicated on the 80th anniversary of its - as well as Town Hall's - original dedication date of Nov. 11, 1928. But Mulvehill said yesterday the restoration work will still be done, as long as the money can be raised, but will not be done by Veterans Day. "We gave it a shot, but it just wasn't realistic," said Mulvehill. Fundraising has been going well, he said. But the money won't come soon enough to allow Phaneuf Restorations to do the job prior to Nov. 11, the anniversary of the armistice that ended World War I. Phaneuf will perform a complete makeover of the piece, which will require the gun to be hauled off the Town Hall lawn to the company's Southborough facility. The German army used the field piece during World War I. Allied troops seized it and gave it to American Legion Post #70 in Norwood. The artillery piece is rusting in many places. Mulvehill hopes to get it completely overhauled, including repairing the gun's gears that move the barrel of the piece vertically, repairing rust damage and repainting the gun.
