My very first computer was a mini Apple desk top. It was a smart little thing. And in that day and age (some 13 years ago) anything smaller than a large cardboard box was considered revolutionary. I got it second hand. Which explains why it didn’t last long. It literally fizzled, smoked and died on [...] ...

Starting in 1961 Russia was lauching probes fast and furiously towards Venus. This continued into the early 80's and while a lot of good scientific data was returned, a lot of probes failed for various reasons too. To me it seems like Russia put all their eggs into one basket with so many probes going to just one body in the Solar System. I know they have explored elsewhere, however there was definitely something drawing them back to Venus so many times. My question is; was Russia trying to put together a manned mission to Venus until they realized conditions there wouldn't allow it, or where they just that facinated with the planet? Were they sensing that they were going to lose the moon race and decided to try and do the American's one better by venturing to another planet? If anyone has any theories I'd love to hear because I have several; from perfectly normal explainations to geez, whats he been smoking. Thanks ...

That's the title of the cover story (by Hannah Hoag) in the most recent New Scientist (19 July 2008). It begins: ANYONE in a long-term relationship will tell you that, at times, men are indeed from Mars, and women are almost certainly from Venus. It's common knowledge that the sexes often think very differently, but until [...] ...

clipped by: balthazarus Clip Source: www.universetoday.com Colonizing Venus With Floating Cities Landis is a scientist at NASA's Glenn Research Center who writes science fiction in his spare time. Venus, our hot, greenhouse-effect-gone-mad neighboring planet with a crushing surface pressure that has doomed the few spacecraft that have attempted to reach the planet's mysterious landscape. Venus' surface itself is pretty much out of the question for human habitation. But up about 50 kilometers above the surface, Landis says the atmosphere of Venus is the most Earth -like environment What Landis proposes is creating floating cities on Venus where people could live and work, as well as study the planet below. 50 km above the surface, Venus has air pressure of approximately 1 bar and temperatures in the 0°C-50°C range, a quite comfortable environment for humans. Humans wouldn't require pressurized suits when outside, but it wouldn't quite be a shirtsleeves environment. We'd need air to breathe and protection from the sulfuric acid in the atmosphere. I'm finally back home from a long trip visiting family, so it's time for me to get back in the swing of things by checking up on the current activities of the twenty spacecraft exploring the solar system. I'm going to change things up this week and lead with the two active ESA-led missions, Mars Express and Venus Express, both of which announced new activities last week. Both spacecraft are little sisters to Rosetta, re-using many components .... ...
