There I am, minding my own business, my head full of the home-heating-oil crisis , when somebody on the sidewalk outside the House office buildings is suddenly offering me a vegetarian "hotdog." Not just somebody; somebody wearing a garment composed of leaves. Agree with the organization or not, PeTA, the People for Ethical Treatment of Animals, has definite ideas about how to get a message across . In this case, the booth carried the banner "Go Green, Go Vegetarian." I overheard a guy who accepted one of the vegetarian food items say to another guy, "Good hotdog." To which his acquaintance responded, "Yeah, they are." Ummm, sure. You were there for the dogs.   (Photo: PeTA "lettuce girls" deliver hotdogs and a vegetarian message; Credit: Jesse Hamilton) ...

In the ‘She-didn't-see-this-coming?' category, Gwyneth Paltrow was recently slammed by PETA for modeling fur in ads for Tod's, an Italian maker of fashion accessories. Paltrow, a proclaimed vegetarian, is known for her green, holistic lifestyle and close friendship with staunch animal-rights designer, Stella McCartney, yet she is fronting the autumn collection of fur-lined boots and bags for Tod's. Tricky, no? As an aspiring vegetarian, I'm befuddled. Can V-Folks have it both ways? "People are more violently opposed to fur than leather because it's safer to harass rich women than motorcyle gangs." --Alexei Sayle, British comedian, actor, author   PETA, in their usual snarky tone, issued the following statement: "Gwyneth Paltrow won't be the apple of her daughter's eye if she flaunts the skins of once-beautiful animals. Promoting an industry that electrocutes animals, snaps their necks, and skins them alive is a shocking example to set for a young child ... Apparently, Paltrow's beauty really is only skin deep." PETA has helpfully sent the offending actress gobs of photos, videos and gruesome details about what is done to animals to make fur fashion products but have not received a response. Putting all the Blonde Rage (Jessica Simpson v. Pamela Anderson, Paltrow v. McCartney, Hayden Panetierre v. dolphin hunters, Jenna Jameson v. horny pets) aside for a minute , my question is this: Are Vegetarians and vegans universally expected ...

Vegetarians are often the butt of much ridicule - they are picky eaters, high maintenance, self-righteous, overly sensitive. I even remember being told that I smell bad because I was a vegetarian by my friends in high school. But Vegetarians should rejoice in the good company they keep (well, except Hitler). Here is a list [...] ...

There is a way to save the world, your health and money all at the same time. Eat less meat. A 2006 study at the University of Chicago showed going vegetarian can make a bigger impact on global warming than switching from an SUV to a hybrid car. But you don't have to go that far. You can eat less iceberg lettuce. Eat less processed food. Or just eat less, period. This is the fourth article in a series called Make Five. These are suggestions for little changes you can make to help the planet, based on Chicago's 2007 environmental pledge and your own five senses. It's not a taste of Chicago, but a taste of Peoria that could make a difference. "There's several things," said David Pimentel of Cornell University. "Eat locally. Reduce meat, milk and egg consumption. Reduce the number of calories consumed each day." Pimentel and a group of fellow researchers just published a study called "Reducing Energy Inputs in the U.S. Food System." He is both an ecologist and an agriculturalist. "I've been interested in the issue of energy and the environment," he said. "We obviously have an energy problem." So for the last two years, his group has been studying the interaction between the two. The results point out that agricultural production, processing and transportation consumes almost one-fifth of the yearly energy use in the U.S. And it can be a highly inefficient process. "The average distance food is shipped in the United States is 1,500 m ...
