I want to use my AP national scholar award to spite the spoiled, pretentious yuppie preppy high school district in the neighbouring town. (Why the vendetta? I myself was once schooled in that district, from kindergarten to early middle school. The children [95% white] are some of the most conceited and racially bigoted people I have met, although the bigotry is a cultural one, i.e. it's not Jim Crow'ish. The adults' bigotry is a little bit subtler and under the surface, but still very vicious.) If my instinct is correct, the rich school district, despite having 3 times more funding per capita than us, besides the fact that 96% of their graduates go on to four-year institutions (my high school's rate: 47%), despite that nearly all their students' parents have substantially higher household incomes than us, despite all their students going on to institutions that appear on CC's "top institutions" list (their number: 8 to 15 out of 150; our number: 2 / 213, excluding the 67 that dropped out), despite all their indulgent and decadent European summer vacations, none of their students will have clinched the award this year. I mean, I know on a national scale, AP national scholar is nothing, especially compared to state scholar, and plenty of CC'ers get them, but if my information is correct, not even their Valedictorian, who they had to flash through all the local newspapers ("oh look at me! I'm so fly! I'm taking all these AP courses! And I ... Source: hcagr.squarespace.com --- 18 days ago

Everyone at West on Centre last Monday night who gathered for ReadBoston’s author series admired Raffi Yessayan’s work as an assistant district attorney for Boston. And they respected his work for the gangs unit, eventually rising to chief. But few could believe what he would become, only a decade later: a celebrated author of mystery novels. Most incredulous of all at Monday’s gathering was Yessayan himself, who proclaimed himself “a product of Boston Public Schools,” but just barely that. “You’ve heard of the Valedictorian,” Yessayan told a crowd gathered at West to support ReadBoston and listen to him read. “At Boston Latin, we had the maledictorian — the lowest of your class. I was the maledictorian of my class — so from assistant DA to author is [something], but from maledictorian to author is even better.” Yessayan’s book, “Eight in a Box ”, was released by Random House in June. Friends of Yessayan’s from the district attorney’s office, along with Mayor Thomas Menino, City Councilor John Tobin, state Sen. Marian Walsh and state Rep. Mike Rush were on hand to congratulate him along with many other well-wishers and newly acquired fans. Born in Lebanon, Yessayan grew up in Roslindale, where much of “Eight in a Box”, is set. The book, Yessayan explained, gets its title from the number of jurors needed to fill a jury box in city court. The story follows a series of murders in Boston for which the bodies cannot be found, and o ... Source: naplesnews.com --- 5 days ago
