Related Articles Coverages and factors associated with influenza Vaccination among subjects with chronic respiratory diseases in Spain. Eur J Public Health. 2008 Apr;18(2):173-7 Authors: López-de-Andrés A, Carrasco-Garrido P, Hernández-Barrera V, de Miguel AG, Jiménez-García R BACKGROUND: The main influenza complications particularly affect patients over the age of 65 years and those with associated chronic diseases, such as respiratory disorders. This study aims to assess Vaccination coverage among Spanish children and adults with chronic respiratory diseases (CRDs), and to describe the factors associated with Vaccination in 2003. METHODS: We analysed 28,113 records of individuals (6869 children and 21,244 adults) included in the Spanish National Health Survey (NHS) for 2003. As a dependent variable, we used the reply ('yes' or 'no') to the question: 'Did you have a 'flu shot in the latest campaign?' We calculated influenza vaccine coverage as the percentage of individuals with a respiratory disorder (asthma and/or chronic bronchitis and/or emphysema) who reported having been vaccinated against influenza in the most recent campaign. We analysed the influence of sociodemographic, health-status, medical visits and lifestyle variables on Vaccination. RESULTS: Vaccination coverage was 19.9% in children and 54.7% in adults suffering CRD. In both age groups, coverages were significantly higher than those observed for non-CRD sufferers. Amo ...

The U.S. Departments of Health and Human Services (HHS) and Homeland Security (DHS) released guidance on allocating and targeting pandemic influenza vaccine. The guidance provides a planning framework to help state, tribal, local and community leaders ensure that vaccine allocation and use will reduce the impact of a pandemic on public health. ...

Vaccines based on human papillomavirus (HPV) 16 and 18 virus-like particles have the potential to prevent [sim]70% of cervical cancers. In Australia, public Vaccination against HPV commenced in April 2007, and includes routine Vaccination of females aged 12-13 years, and a 2-year school and GP-based catch-up in females aged 12-26 years. The objectives of this study were to estimate initial Vaccination coverage rates, to describe current patterns of sexual behavior in young females, and to predict the impact of Vaccination on HPV16 infections. We reviewed early coverage data, estimating that coverage in 2007/2008 will reach 86% (feasible range 67-90%) for 12- to 13-year-old girls, with lower rates attained in older females. A review of survey data found that the median age of first intercourse in Australian females is 16 years, with [sim]90% of women sexually active at 22 years. Using these data, we performed an analysis of HPV transmission to predict the impact of Vaccination on HPV infection rates. The public program is predicted to result in a reduction in the age-standardized incidence of HPV16 infections of 56% by 2010 (feasible range 48-61%), and 92% by 2050 (feasible range 76-95%). Elective Vaccination of older women and Vaccination of males may provide some incremental gains, but the benefits to women of vaccinating males will be less if coverage of females remains high. In conclusion, the current Vaccination program is expecte ...

Related Articles Characterization of immunogenic properties of polyclonal T cell vaccine intended for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. Bull Exp Biol Med. 2007 Oct;144(4):630-4 Authors: Ivanova IP, Seledtsov VI, Seledtsov DV, Samarin DM, Seledtsova GV, Herzsog OA, Kozlov VA Two-staged technology for obtaining polyclonal T cell vaccine intended for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis is described. Stage 1 includes antigen-dependent cultural selection of patient's T cells and stage 2 consists in their reproduction in the needed amounts by nonspecific mitogenic stimulation. T cell Vaccination induces an effective specific anti-idiotypic immune response against T cells reactive to joint antigens. Vaccine therapy significantly reduces plasma level of IFN-gamma and increases IL-4 level. The results indicate immunological efficiency and safety of polyclonal T cell vaccine in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. PMID: 18642727 [PubMed - in process] ...

The headline said, "Vaccination plan puts health care workers first," but you had to read the article to find out who goes next: the military. This according to the Guidance on allocating and targeting pandemic influenza vaccine released yesterday by the US Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). The guidance is premised on the assumption that in the early phases of a pandemic, any vaccine will be in short supply and will need to be rationed. The document gives "strong advice" on how DHHS thinks this rationing should take place, although much is left unexplained. Since the allocation to states will come from a national stockpile, the strong advice will have some weight. Moreover, some of the vaccine will be taken "off the top" for federal government use and this will not be subject to any decisions downstream. And some of the federal allocations appear to us to be highly questionable: Read the rest of this post... | Read the comments on this post... ...

I am disappointed by Dr. Jeff Kahler's article "How long should puppy stay home during the Vaccination schedule?," (July 15, Page F-1). While he does a thorough job explaining the Vaccination series, he comes to a dangerous conclusion in suggesting that puppies be kept at home until the series concludes at 16 to 18 weeks. As a Certified Pet Dog Trainer, I have seen the tragic behavioral consequences of confining puppies to the home. ...

Mumps (a viral infection) is making a comeback in the U.S. and other countries because of failure to vaccinate. It is not a trivial disease, particularly in adults, and is highly communicable. In children, mumps typically causes fever, headache, muscle aching, fatigue, loss of appetite, and swelling of salivary glands, in particular the parotid glands, which are located in the cheeks directly in... ...
