Monday was not a good day for Woodrow Wilson High School principal Peter Cahall, who said he got calls from 30 job applicants and parents "banging down my door" about five teaching Vacancies that he doesn't have. The Post reported yesterday that five openings at Wilson were among more than 90 unfilled positions that still remain five weeks into the academic year. It was based on an internal report generated last Thursday by the D.C. school system's human resources department. School officials say that the document is outdated and that the number of Vacancies is actually 42. "I believe the issue is with HR's vacancy data base and that it is not accurate," Cahall said in an e-mail yesterday. HUD said today that it's giving $50 million in grants to housing counseling groups, including about $3.9 million to Maryland organizations. Housing counselors are trained to help people buy and stay in homes, though it's the latter part that's taken a lot of their time in recent months as foreclosures rise. Meanwhile, the National Multi Housing Council says in a new research note that there are "approximately 825,000 excess vacant single-family houses and 125,000 excess vacant condos beyond normal vacancy levels" in the country. That doesn't count what it says are the "2 million excess existing houses and condos still occupied but on the market." Citigroup's purchase of the bulk of Wachovia could contribute to an increase in office Vacancies in the center city and cause rental rates to decline as new and existing buildings compete for tenants. The acquisition also has people talking about what will happen to Wachovia's $900 million uptown construction project. Much of what occurs next will depend on how many of Wachovia's 20,000 Charlotte employees and how much of the bank's operations the New York-based bank decides to keep in the city, real estate experts say. “What Citigroup is getting real cheap is a bunch of retail branches in the Southeast,” said real estate broker David Dorsch of Colliers Pinkard. “In a growing part of the country, it might make sense for them to leave a lot of stuff in Charlotte.” Charlotte officials make the argument that it is cheaper to do business here than in large metropolitan areas such as New York. Real estate brokers point out that it is expensive to move operations. Citigroup hasn't elaborated on how it will combine the banks, but based on past consolidations, local brokers say, Charlotte likely would lose many Wachovia jobs. “Wachovia is keeping Wachovia Securities and Evergreen Asset Management, so it is hard to tell what the net effect is going to be,” said real estate analyst Melanie Sizemore of Carolinas Real Data.
