Filed under: HDTV , Home Entertainment With apologies to Shakespeare, something is brewing at VUDU . With CEDIA just around the corner, the company has laid off some of its staff, most notably some of its marketing higher-ups. Additionally, rumors are swirling regarding just about every aspect of the upstart company's future. CEPro got some talk-time with the VUDU's national dealer channel manager, and a theme of decreased emphasis on the retail channel seems to run throughout the conversation, punctuated by a end-of-life status on the VUDU X100 . Meanwhile, the company is making some CEDIA promises for its custom-install-targeted VUDU XL : more HD content (1,000 titles), more connectivity (HD over component) and lifetime warranties on purchased titles. It's all rumor, but we wouldn't be surprised to see VUDU move exclusively into the custom-install market where it seems to have a toe-hold. So what say ye -- is something rotten in VUDU, or should we hang up the codpiece and get back to work? Just because Apple offers a $0.99 movie every week doesn’t mean that other video-on-demand folks are taking things lying down. VUDU, for example, has decided to retaliate by launching an offensive that offers not just one, but 99 movie rentals , each priced at $0.99. My first thought was: okay, yeah, but what kind of movies are we talking about here? Is this like Netflix’s “Watch Now” feature, with its scads of films people have never even heard of? I’m not sure how much I want to watch Return to the Sullen Moss, Part XIV . But, if they’re telling the truth on their site , then the selection’s actually not that bad. It ranges from classics like Chinatown and Vertigo to recent favorites like Serenity as well as favorites culled from my own personal collection, like Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels . And, according to VUDU, the catalog will change over time, perpetually rotating in new titles among the ninety-nine. Of course, in order to take advantage of the deal, you need one of ‘em fancypants $299 VUDU boxes hooked up to your TV. Maybe that’s a dealbreaker, or maybe it’s a reason for you to run out and snag one right this very moment. The choice, as always, is yours. VUDU might be on to something with its new promotion: "Stay in. Rent four movies for the price of 1 gallon gas!" At today's prices for movie tickets, concession snacks, and the cost of gas for getting to and from the theater, a family of four could easily spend upwards of a $100 for a night out at the movies. Staying at home and watching movie rentals means you'll miss out on the latest releases, but a quick gander at VUDU's catalog shows that its rental offerings include many A-list titles, including some films ...

Web-based video rental service VUDU on Wednesday unveiled a summer movie offering that includes video renewals and rentals for 99 cents. VUDU, which streams movies to your TV via set-top VUDU boxes, will now allow customers to renew their video rentals for 99 cents within seven days of its first viewing; HD renewals will run $1.99. The company will also rotate a list of 99 movies from its library of more than 6,000 films that will be available for 99 cents. "In this age of $4-a-gallon gas and staycations, we felt that VUDU customers deserved a break and should be able to watch a great film for just 99 cents," Patrick Cosson, vice president of marketing for VUDU, said in a statement. Current 99 for 99 cents options include Sweeney Todd, Cloverfield, Groundhog Day, The King of Kong, and Logan's Run. VUDU rentals are typically $3.99 per movie; users can also purchase the films for $19.99. Standard 250 GB VUDU boxes are available for $299, and the higher-end XL model for home theaters retail for $999. In June, VUDU released a wireless kit that sells for $79. It is comprised of two adapters, the first of which plugs directly to your home network via Ethernet and requires external power, while the second adapter plugs into the USB (for power) and Ethernet ports on the VUDU system. Once the VUDU box is powered, it automatically configures itself with the wireless kit. ...
