Photo: Getty Images Though Obama's veep selection is imminent, he seems to be "Biden his time" (ha!) until later in the week to make the announcement. But with a slew of recent polls showing his lead against John McCain diminished or gone completely, some big news might be just what Obama needs. An LAT/Bloomberg poll has Obama up by just two points, while a Zogby poll released this morning shows McCain — yes, McCain — with a five-point lead. We've noted before how cyclic, ephemeral swings in the polls tend to send political observers into a frenzy. But these polls are part of a longer, more ominous trend for Obama. His momentum has vanished, the race has drawn to a dead heat, and Republicans are, maybe for the first time, showing some real optimism. • Chuck Todd and friends contend that "there is no longer this widespread belief among the wise guys and gals of both parties that we're all just sitting around waiting for this race to break in Obama's direction." The Obama campaign can't afford to make mistakes, and the McCain campaign "thinks it can win," which "wasn’t the case a few months ago." [ First Read/MSNBC ] • Nate Silver proclaims that "we are getting to the point where it would be hard to describe the election as anything other than 'too close to call'" (and that was before the new Zogby poll). [ FiveThirtyEight ] • Michael Goodwin speculates that the media's "fawning coverage" of Obama, which the McCain campaign has hig ...

DANVILLE — In addition to choosing a president on Nov. 4, Danville VOTERS will decide whether to change their form of city government. Boyle County Clerk Denise Curtsinger said Monday that enough signatures of registered VOTERS had been collected to put a question on the general election ballot that asks whether Danville should change from the city manager form of government to a mayor-council form of government. The petition was turned in Aug. 12 with more than 1,400 signatures. The petition needed 1,241 signatures, and Curtsinger said more than 1,290 were verified. Tim Montgomery, a petition organizer, said gaining enough signatures “was a pretty easy sell.” But he acknowledged that it will take more work to gain a majority of VOTERS to approve the plan. ...

VOTERS in the city of Lancaster have narrowly approved the sale of alcohol. The Lexington Herald-Leader reports on its Web site that the vote Tuesday was 656 to 550 in support of the move to go "wet" in the Garrard County community. Lancaster Mayor Don Rinthen supported the measure and says it will offer the chance for economic growth. Under the measure, an unrestricted number of retail stores will be able to sell beer and up to seven stores will be able to sell liquor by the package. Some gas stations will also be able to sell beer. ...

BOSTON — The Massachusetts League of Environmental VOTERS (MLEV), the non-partisan political voice for the environment, announced its endorsement of Ken Donnelly for the 4th Middlesex Senate race today, citing his strong commitment to environmental issues that affect both the commonwealth and his district. “MLEV is proud to endorse Ken Donnelly, a public servant who is strongly committed to protecting the environment and combating global warming,” said MLEV Executive Director Lora Wondolowski. “This district has always been represented by strong environmental leaders. We are confident that Ken will continue that trend and be a real leader on these critical issues.” In his MLEV questionnaire, Mr. Donnelly cited combating global warming, improving public transportation, and encouraging renewable energy as his top environmental priorities. As a firefighter, Mr. Donnelly served on a commission that worked to decrease exposure to toxic chemicals for firefighters. This led to the passage of legislation to compensate those who contract cancer as a result of toxic exposures. Ken is committed to working with other legislators to ensure that the environment is a top priority in the legislature. “I am honored by the endorsement of MLEV and grateful for their trust and support in this campaign. I believe that our future quality of life — as well as our economic well-being — depends on the energy and environmental choices we make today. With the ri ...

Some time ago, just prior to a hotly contested local election, I asked a friend which candidate he preferred. After announcing his choice, I followed up with the obvious and predictable question, “Why do you like him?” The response surprised me since the person giving it is not only quite politically perceptive, but also well acquainted with the issues facing the community at the time. In evaluating the candidate, he told me, “His father was one of the finest people I’ve ever known.” That conversation confirmed my suspicions about many VOTERS. With the primary and general elections fast approaching this fall, there is no better time to consider the factors we each take into consideration when selecting our leaders on Election Day. Though the presidential candidates have spent more than two years crisscrossing the country, few of us will ever get the chance to personally meet and evaluate them one-on-one. However, our candidates for local office are generally quite accessible and visible. The fact is, they are almost unavoidable during the height of a spirited campaign, maintaining rigorous schedules that include rallies, debates, festivals, feasts and — as we like to say in the SouthCoast — political “times.” Like my friend who selected his favorite candidate because of a family connection, lots of us are similarly informal about our assessment of those who seek office. Truthfully, the temptation to cast votes based on nothing more th ...
