Performing a Virtual machine live migration across different vendors' CPUs is probably one of the most wanted feature for several customers that can’t just replace their entire hardware set every time that a new generation of CPUs hits the market. The topic is so hot that a recent demonstration of its feasibility performed by AMD in collaboration with Red Had immediately became a point of discussion. VMware (and its investor Intel) commented the effort saying that a cross-CPUs live migration is a too risky operation for the stability of the virtualized workloads. True or not the virtualization professionals that decide to take the risk may achieve the goal through the so called CPU masking technique. Mike DiPetrillo, Principal Systems Engineer at VMware, discusses the topic and kindly shows how to turn off CPU checking in VI 3.5 in a couple of different ways. It would be nice if virtualization.info readers could comment this post reporting the nasty effects of these CPU masking approach. ...

In two previous tutorials, you have learned how to install smaller and lighter Apache alternative for your desktop — nginx and lighttpd. While they are more than enough to satisfy the need of theme designers and plugin developers, some people prefer to have a full-blown server running for a few reasons. The most obvious reason is server compatibility for which code will be deployed on. While the WLMP and WEMP are much like running your own server, there are issues like… ...

As part of some investigation into virtualizing Citrix servers I decided to evaluate the use of Windows 2003 32 bit Standard servers running as Virtual Machines on VMware ESX. The reasoning behind the use of Virtual Machines is to try and issue more Citrix sessions to a single server therefore reducing the amount of hardware, data center space, power consumption and heat generated by the multiple physical servers.... ...

This paper demonstrates the ability of VMware® ESX 3.5 to scale while guaranteeing fairness and isolation under a demanding SQL Server load. Experiments discussed in this paper involve Virtual Machines demanding system resources as their numbers increase, Virtual Machines with varying degrees of load contending for finite system resources, and runaway Virtual Machines attempting to demand additional system resources due to increasing load. In all cases ESX 3.5 meets or exceeds the most demandin... ...

VMware plans to introduce a version of its virtualization technology that is designed for cell phones. The VMware Mobile Virtualization Platform will use a small-footprint hypervisor to let users have multiple Virtual Machines on their smart phones in the same way a desktop or notebook can host different Virtual environments. Apparently VMware bought some technology from a company called Trango Virtual Machines last month which they're launching today as the "VMware Mobile Virtual Platform" (VMware MVP). The point of this is not so a user can run multiple VMs on a mobile device at the same time, but instead so that different types of phones can run the same OS image. (In this case, the Trango hypervisor or whatever you call it would "scrub" and hide the details of the hardware from the mobile... ...
