Hi, I've got several identical hosts (same Hardware, same BIOS (since all of this is scripted)) and same HP Proliant Management Agents 8.10 Now the strange part, every hosts is displaying other items in the "Health Status"; Some host only display CPU and Memory while other hosts report much more items. The servers are all running for a couple of days now but no more information is diplayed. I guess this "Health Status"-view is still under some heavy development and is currently running version 1.0.0.0.0 ? Cheers, Kenneth ... Source: communities.vmware.com --- 32 days ago

There are two common methods for running Microsoft Windows and Windows programs on an Apple (AAPL) Macintosh, and one of those methods just got better and easier. The first approach uses a feature called Boot Camp that comes free on every new Mac. Using Boot Camp, the entire Mac is turned into a Windows PC, with the full capabilities and speed of a standard Windows machine. No trace of the Mac operating system is left running. The downside is that you can’t run Windows and Mac programs side by side. The second approach uses one of two third-party programs to create a virtual Windows PC inside your Mac. This faux Windows machine runs at normal speeds and can operate simultaneously with the Mac’s own operating system. Programs native to each operating system can run side by side. The downside is that, because Windows doesn’t get complete control of the computer’s Hardware, it isn’t quite as fast as in Boot Camp, and a few of its functions, like 3D graphics, don’t work as well. This latter method is enabled by two excellent, closely matched $80 programs: Parallels, from a Swiss-based company of the same name, and Fusion, from VMware (VMW), a U.S. company. It is Fusion that just got better, because VMware just issued version 2.0 of the product with lots of new features, some of which let it catch up to the older Parallels and some of which push it ahead. I’ve been testing Fusion 2.0 for a couple of weeks on two different Macs, and using it ...

There’s buzz around Silicon Valley that there will be a big announcement made at VMworld next week in Las Vegas. Have just updated to VMware Server 2.00 GA from rc2 and for the first time have compared guest performance using two different host O/S on the same Hardware. The box has a quad core X5355 cpu @ 2.66GHz with 16GB RAM. The guest config is Win2003 x86 (single cpu). The two host configs are Win2003 32bit and OpenSuse Linux 11.0 64bit with latest patches etc. Memory trimming switched off. We used a benchmark tool in the guest called Sandra Lite2009. Disk performance was comparable. (The virtual disks were kept on an NTFS partition used by both host O/S). Memory-intensive performance was poor with the Linux host...most of benchmarks put it at about half the performance of the Windows host benchmarks. The difficulty at this point is determining whether VMware is to blame or if it's something that is not optimal in the Linux host config itself. I'd like to be able to somehow compare performance of the two hosts, but across different O/S I'm not sure how you would do this. Also I do remember seeing a thread in the Beta forum (which I can't find now) that criticised the VMware behavior on Linux compared to Wiindows in respect of memory management...something to do with the disk-backed nature of the guest's memory footprint? Appreciate any advice...this seems like too bigger performance penalty for taking the jump to 64 bit land. (I was more attracted to migrating onto a lean 64bit Linux kernel than going to Windows 2003 64bit.) ... Source: communities.vmware.com --- 10 hours ago
We're widening our ESXi 3.5.1 test deployment to a second server, and we've encountered an unusual problem. ESXi doesn't appear to be receiving ARP packets. Periodically the switch just "loses" IPs from its NIC and we've confirmed that it's due to ARP caches expiring. Inside a VM, we can packet dump without ever seeing any ARP traffic. Sometimes doing a "Restart Networking" from the console helps for awhile, and as long as traffic continually passes to an IP, obviously its arp cache does not expire. The first machine we loaded ESXi does not have this problem, running all the same tests, we get exactly the results one would expect. We have already exhaustively tested the Hardware and switch port. Both are working fine. Switch port monitoring shows that the ARP requests are outbound to the VMware box, but they never make it. This is not related to the guest networking stack, this happens with the ESXi management NIC as well / even right after startup when no guests are running. ("Test Management Network" has to be done to render it accessible to the VI client.) So it's somewhere in the ESXi physical LAN driver or the vSwitch. Both the working ESXi server and the new test server are Supermicro servers that are either on the HCL or from the same "series" as machines on the HCL (same electronics, different disk configuration or form factor). The machines are identical in terms of CPUs, RAM, disks, etc. The only material difference between ... Source: blogs.vmware.com --- 8 days ago
Mike DiPetrillo is on a roll. (Our podcast with Mike will be up tomorrow; it was delayed because the podcast provider was not posting audio for 24 hours; coincidentally, this blog provider just went out for 45 minutes. There's a cloud and availability post there somewhere.) Link: From the VMware Field: Mike D's Virtualization Blog: Virtual Server Sprawl. He gives 4 reasons for server sprawl, from underestimating how many servers you have to begin with (did you count Jim's two test servers in the old closet?) to now being able to set up some redundancy.I've seen this topic come up over and over again on panels, in the press, on blogs, and in customer conversations. What's virtual server sprawl? It's the theory (or fact) that because virtual machines are so easy to create that once you virtualize your servers will start to multiply like rabbits. I'm here to tell you there's a lot of fact behind that statement. After doing virtualization for 6 1/2 years here at VMware I don't think I've seen one customer reduce their server count ever. Sure, they've gotten rid of a lot of physical Hardware. I guess you could call those servers. However, I've never seen the actual server count (OS/App stack) go down. Usually it starts to ramp up rather quickly.Link: From the VMware Field: Mike D's Virtualization Blog: Building a $500 VMware ESXi Host. Hi! I have gotten conflicting answers from VMware education materials ("A VM can only run on a single host at a time." - VI3: Install and Config, pg 217) and VMware sales reps ("Sure, that should work fine.") for the following scenario (my hope is that someone out there has tried this configuration and can let me know if it will work before I commit to buying 2 ESX VC licenses). Situation: Have a high end server that currently maxes out the resources available on the box. Have another identical server available as a spare. Goal: Combine Hardware resources of both servers and make them all available as a single machine. Possibility that needs a thumbs up or down: Would like to install ESX3 and VC on both hosts and cluster all the resources of both hosts together into a resource pool. Then create a single VM that would use all the resources in the pool. In case one of the hosts in the cluster failed, the VM would need to keep running on just the resources on the single host (half of what is in the pool). I know this is somewhat backwards to what VMware is usually used for. However, does anyone know if such a configuration would work, and if it would be supported by VMware? Or any other suggestions on how to achieve the Goal listed above? Thank you in advance for your kind help!!! Mak Rule of thumb - do not listen to sales people - what you read in the documentation is correct a VM can only run on a single host at a time - this is true ... Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer today announced the release of Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 during the TechNet Server and Tools keynote address in London. Hyper-V Server 2008 is now available from the Microsoft website as a no-cost download. Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 is a bare metal hypervisor, meaning that it runs directly on top of physical Hardware allowing virtual machines operating systems to run on top of it, similar to VMware's ESX platform or Citrix XenServer. Previous Microsoft virtualization platforms requires a separate Windows session running as a host, with virtual machines running on top of that. Companies that deploy a Hyper-V virtualization solution for can consolidate Windows or Linux workloads onto a single physical server or to run client operating systems and applications in server-based virtual machines in the data center. Management is done through Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008, which is currently available as beta software, although Microsoft expects final version will be released by the end of the month. Minimum Hardware requirements for Hyper-V Server include an x64 processor with Hardware-assisted virtualization (either Intel VT or AMD Virtualization) that is also Data Execution Protection (DEP) enabled. It also requires a second computer, typically in an Active Directory environment running the Hyper-V manager. Both Dell and HP will be delivering servers based on this new hypervi ... Hi, We've recently performed a P2V migration using VMware converter and we're having a major problem. After the VM in question being fine for hours (sometimes days), some processes that connect to other processes inside the VM via TCP sockets suddenly become unable to initiate any further connections, resulting in us needing to restart the processes in question. This has been observed on both VMware Server 1.0.6 and ESXi. This problem never occurred on physical Hardware, so the problem is clearly some sort of virtualisation oddity, as evidenced by various posts in these forums. No concrete answers have been presented in any posts I've read, so any pointers would be greatly appreciated. The VM is a Windows 2000 Server instance. ... Source: planet.ubuntu.com --- 4 days ago
September has been a busy month in terms of milestones: alpha5 and alpha6 were pushed out of the door. And a BetaFreeze went in effect during the last week of the month. Here is a selection of what happened in the archive during the month of September. clamav protected by apparmor The clamav anti-virus package saw the addition of an apparmor profile to increase the protection of the virus scanning daemon. freeradius 2.1 A new upstream release of freeradius made its way to the intrepid archive. Support for ipv6, virtual servers and an improved administration tool are some of the new features. The server core has also been rewritten to be event based. This resulted in fixing lots of bugs that were difficult to address in the 1.1.X version. Virtualization A helper script that checks if the Hardware supports virtualization extensions has been added to the kvm package. Support for hal and policykit has also been integrated thus improving the kvm experience in a desktop environment. Both kvm and qemu have been fixed to use evdev for keycode mapping based on the code from gtk-vnc. That lead to the resolution of a particular bug causing grief to kvm users , namely the unfortunate loss of ability to use arrow keys, function keys, and any other sort of extended keys. vm-builder has seen an big update to its documentation as well as support for creating VMware and xen images.
