Does anyone know how I can disable the menubar from appearing in VMware Fusion while running a virtual machine in full screen mode? I typically run Ubuntu (sometimes XP as well) in full screen mode on another virtual desktop using VMware Fusion and Spaces, and whenever the mouse touches the top of the screen, the menubar appears. This is not a big deal in XP, but on Ubuntu I'm force to avoid contact with the very top of the screen while navigating the menus on Ubuntu's menubar. So back to my original question, is there a way to stop the OS X menubar from appearing? By the way, I'm running Leopard and Fusion 2.0. Thanks :) ...

Before upgrading to version 2 sound work on at least my xp sp3 vm. Now that I've upgraded sound does not work on my old xp sp3 vm, or on my oracle (red hat) linux vm. It also does not work in the new xp sp3 vm that I created for v2 (i.e. not an upgraded vm) and my new v2 linux install. None of them have sound support. It looks like it is working on xp but just not making it to the actual hardware side. Looks like others have had this issue but no solutions have worked so far. I have tried disabling the sound from xp, restarting, and then reenabling. I have tried disabling and reenabling the sound from the Fusion console. I've also tried deleting the sound card driver and letting windows reinstall it on its own. None of these have worked. I've not really tried anything from the linux side becuase honestly, it's not all that important that I have sound over there. Ideas? ...

Since upgrading from VMware Fusion 2 Beta 2 to the final version I have been unable to drag and drop files to or from the XP guest and OS X 10.5 host. When dragging a file out of the guest the mouse simply stops at the edge of the window. But when I drag a file into the guest, the guest cursor acts as if I had actually drug the cursor from the top left of the screen and selected all of the icons on the desktop. Indeed, even if I have an open explorer.exe window and try to drag the file onto that it behaves as if I had been selecting all of the icons on the guest desktop. With Unity enabled, it also doesn't work, albeit without the desktop problem. Moreover, after attempting to drag a file onto the guest desktop the vmwareuser.exe process will spike to 99% and stay there until terminated. (Up until this point, the process behaves normally.) A few other notes: The problem is specific to this guest. Another XP guest I have functions perfectly well. Shared folders function properly. I have attempted to uninstall/reinstall VMware tools a few times, to no avail. I created a VMware Tools log, but noticed nothing obviously wrong when I scanned it. The VM image was originally taken from a Dell laptop and converted thanks to VMware Converter. But as I said, it's been functioning great up until now. Any help would be greatly appreciated! ...

VM@Work Tokamak 2.0.0 Network Utility Dave Parsons 1.0 Introduction 1.1 Background These scripts replace the default network configuration processing for VMware Fusion. New features are made available that match those found in the other hosted VMware products, such as Workstation and Server. The new capabilities introduced by these scripts are based on the functionality provided by VMware Workstation 6.0 for Linux. This includes the capability of: Adding new vmnets Deleting vmnets Modifying connection types: e.g. bridged, hostonly, nat Changing IP addresses Changing the physical interface used for bridged connections Reference material for the use of this software can be found in documentation for the network configuration scripts for VMware Workstation 6.0 for Linux. This is available online at the VMware web site, and can also be downloaded in PDF format. Questions can be asked at the VMware Communities in the Fusion forum, and also check out the search facility to see if the question has been answered before. The code is copyrighted Dave Parsons and also contains copyrighted VMware code. I must please ask that you do not re-post the code or modify without consulting me first. VMware kindly gave me explicit permission to re-distribute their code. I am happy to take feedback and any patches that may be useful to others. 1.2 What's New? I have recently upgraded to VMware Fusion 2 from 1.1.3 on my Macbook 10.5.5 After upgrading the new virtual machine, and reinstalling VMware tools I have set the Virtual Machine (Windows XP Professional SP3) to allow the use of shared folders. in the shared folders list, i have added the "admin" folders on my host OS Mac OS X 10.5.5 for some reason after adding this folder to the list i get a message saying that: "some shared or mirrored folders cannot be enabled because they are subfolders or parent folders of folders that are already shared or mirrored. (placing one folder within another is called nesting). nesting shared folders allow you to drag a file onto itself, which is potentially dangerous. disable the currently shared or mirrored folders that would cause the nesting situation to enable the other folders". I have not checked any of the mirrored folders. i have a "shared folder" shortcut of my host on my guest virtual desktop, but after i changed its name, each time i reboot the virtual machine i automaticly a second shortcut to the host's "shared folder" with the original name. ( even if i delete it over and over). is there a way to solve 1. the message in the shared folders settings in VMware settings. 2. the re-showing of the "shared folders" on the guest desktop. thank you, Michael. ...

Dear All, I am looking at deploying VMware Fusion across the 700 Apple Intel Mac computers which I administer for a large K-12 school, as this seems like a much better and easier to administer solution than running Boot Camp on the machines (which we have been doing for the last two years, with varying success). I intend to build a Windows XP virtual machine on a master computer (running Leopard 10.5.4) and then sysprep this virtual machine. Then, I will take an image of the master computer and deploy this to all 700 computers. Once the image is deployed on the client computers I will fire-up the Windows XP virtual machine to run the sysprep mini-setup and finalise the setup of Windows. I have a few questions about this potential solution: (a) Since I would be imaging VMware Fusion and the Windows XP virtual machine, does this mean that the XP virtual machine on all 700 computers would have the same MAC address? This could obviously create some major issues. If so, is there a way to script (e.g. via command line) VMware Fusion to re-generate the MAC addresses on each virtual machine? (b) Assuming that, some way or another, VMware Fusion has to re-generate the MAC addresses on all the virtual machines, since we have 700 computers in the environment how would VMware Fusion know not to generate the same MAC address for two computers (I imagine this would be unlikely, given the large pool of possible MAC addresses, but still a possibility) ...

Filed under: Enterprise , Software , Universal Binary Great news for any virtualization junkies out there (I know I'm not the only one). VMware Fusion 2.0 has just been will be released Tuesday! Fusion 2.0 is a free upgrade for all existing 1.x customers, and it adds more than 100 new features and enhancements. [ Note: VMware's product manager told us an official announcement time of 12:01am Tuesday morning, EDT; however the final version of Fusion 2.0 has not appeared on VMware's website yet as of 12:45am, as pointed out by Jonathan 'Wolf' Rentzsch. -Ed. Update: as of 1 am EDT, the Fusion page has been revised to include the 2.0 upgrade information. -Ed. ] I've been using Fusion 2.0 since it first entered beta during the summer and have been very impressed with its performance and feature set. In addition to TUAW, I also write for Download Squad , where we've been a little bit Chrome-Crazy for the last couple of weeks. Although I have access to a few Windows machines, because all my tools for writing and screenshots and graphics are on my Mac, I've been using the beta and release candidate versions of VMware Fusion 2.0 for all of my testing. Fusion 2.0 features lots of improvements and new features, but the most significant feature, from a technology-pushing perspective, is probably the ability to run Leopard Server as a virtual machine. When Apple made the decision to allow for server virtualization right after Leopard's release ...
