Dear All, I had searched many messages like "VMWare-cmd buggy" ( http://communities.VMWare.com/message/1072229 ) Many people had faced the same questions but why no solution/fix? I don't think it is a bug, since VMWare will not do like this, but it must some tricky. Can anyone tell me how can use VMWare-cmd for network setting? (how can I change the network mode in ESX with CLI or SDK?) I can search many scripts for this but it can't work in my environment. VMWare-cmd can work in VMServer, ESX2.5 for setting network, like: D:\Program Files\VMWare\VMWare Server>VMWare-cmd "d:\Virtual Machines\BizCON\Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition.vmx" getconfig Ethernet1.connectionType getconfig(Ethernet1.connectionType) = custom D:\Program Files\VMWare\VMWare Server>VMWare-cmd "d:\Virtual Machines\BizCON\Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition.vmx" setconfig Ethernet1.connectionType bridged setconfig(Ethernet1.connectionType bridged) = 1 However it was failed on ESX: --root@iconesx35 root--# VMWare-cmd /vmfs/volumes/4886f8b6-91c0fa82-55f0-00304828 842f/123/123.vmx getconfig ethernet0.networkName VMControl error -10: The specified property or variable is invalid or undefined --root@iconesx35 root--# VMWare-cmd /vmfs/volumes/4886f8b6-91c0fa82-55f0-00304828 842f/123/123.vmx getconfig ethernet0.present VMControl error -10: The specified property or variable is invalid or undefined Any idea? I had tried on multiple machine but we still can't getconfig e ...

We are writing a web application which is running on a BladeServer with VMWare ESX Server connected to a SAN. Our application seems to run fairly well in this setup for the most part, under a lot of load the server sometimes will get into a state which seems like its doing nothing (long response times), but we then check the logs and it is doing everything. Requesting performance logs has shown we can have average cpu ready times of 20,000ms which I have heard means its not getting the CPU time it wants. Anyway, My first question is: There is a lot of material for developing/tuning VMWare infrastructure, but no material for tuning the applications that run under VMWare? or should you just write the application like it was running on a physical machine? Second question: Are the high ready times something I can fix in the way the application works, or something that the Administrator should be handling? I did watch them change our VM to high priority which doesnt seem to of done anything which makes me feel like it could be our application. ...

Dave Bailey, vnunet.com , Thursday 9 October 2008 at 11:45:00 VMWare's ThinApp acquisition saves time for IT managers rolling out virtualised apps VMWare acquired application virtualisation vendor ThinApp in January and ThinApp 4.0 , launched in June, is the first fruit of that takeover. Securing Windows applications for mobile professionals, as well as allowing network access by onsite contractors, partners and just ordinary guests, is an age-old problem that application virtualisation using ThinApp neatly solves. Application virtualisation decouples the application from the operating system (OS), unlike hardware virtualisation which merely decouples the OS from the hardware. This means that applications can run on exotic hardware providing the OS has the requisite drivers. The upshot is that, in theory, IT managers can rollout conflict-free applications packaged into what VMWare says is a "virtual bubble" containing the application as a standalone executable or Microsoft Installer file extension. User data is stored in an application embedded sandbox, or one which resides on a network drive, and is renewed after each application deployment. To review ThinApp we downloaded a trial evaluation of the ThinApp Virtualisation Suite, which has the latest release copy of VMWare Workstation 6.0.4 included, along with ThinApp 4.0. VMWare Workstation is included in the suite because it allows the required application to be virtualised on a cl ...

Dave Bailey, vnunet.com , Friday 10 October 2008 at 15:05:00 Latest version supports more guest and host operating systems and integrates with VMWare's ACE Version 6.5 of VMWare's popular Workstation package has lots of new features packed in despite not being a full jump to version 7.0. Launched last week, the headline new features are enhanced VMWare Assured Computing Environment (ACE) authoring, and a so-called Unity mode whereby users can better integrate their favourite guest applications with the host system. Workstation lets users install and run so-called 'guest' operating systems on desktops and laptops which run Windows or Linux as the main operating system. There are many advantages to this. Firms can run older unsupported operating systems with legacy applications not supported on newer operating systems, while security can be tightened with a 'snapshot' capability which allows users to roll back quickly to a previously safe state. VMWare's ACE system gives IT managers the ability to build a virtual OS, which can be locked down and then distributed to end users, subject to certain licensing constraints. With Workstation 6.5 VMWare claims that ACE's authoring features are now fully integrated and that "no special ACE Edition is required". Companies using Workstation in a test and development environment will probably use a high-end system with over 2GB of system memory and multiple processors. As an example, when running W ...

Economically speaking it's a totally crappy time to be talking about the stock market.  People are losing trillions in value in their retirement accounts, banks are insolvent, the worldwide economies are faltering.  But out of despair is opportunity.  If you have time to invest for the long term, I'd say this is as good a time as you will see.  If you are a short-timer before retirement, then why are you reading this?  Get out while you can and don't pay attention to what I'm going to talk about.Stocks  Everyone is pretty much familiar with the stock market right? but do you know what it is?  Sure we see it all over the news.  So lets start off simple, what is a stock? here is a really simple explanation:  A company raises capital for equipment, operations, growth, etc through the issue of shares entitling holders to an ownership interest (equity) in the company.  It's just a fraction, but ownership... ...

Last week VMWare released the Update 3 (build 119825) for VirtualCenter 2.5. Unlike the previous Update 2 , this one wasn’t released for the entire VMWare Infrastructure and doesn’t bring any new feature. It’s only for bug fix and existing components (like the FLEX license server) refreshment. The full list of resolved issues is here . It’s strange that VMWare just changed its release strategy and didn’t include any new feature in this update. Probably all the juicy new capabilities are now already planned for the imminent VMWare Infrastructure 4.0 . The virtualization.info Virtualization Industry Roadmap has been updated accordingly. ...

virtualization.info has just learned that VMWare acquired the security vendor Blue Lane Technologies . The company, popular for its inline patching technology, entered the virtualization market at the beginning of 2007 and completely refocused its effort around the VMWare Infrastructure over the last two years. Like all its competitors, their VirtualShield, is still unable to provide a special integration with the ESX hypervisor and requires a traditional VM-to-VM interaction: the product must be installed inside a virtual machine that acts as a proxy and the virtual networking must be reconfigured to point all protected virtual machines to it. The advent of the security APIs called VMsafe , that VMWare should introduce next year with VI4 , would dramatically change the scenario, finally allowing Blue Lane to transparently protect the virtual infrastructure without any reconfiguration. But this may be no more necessary now that VMWare acquired it. This acquisition confirms one again the extreme commitment of the company in the security space. In the last year in fact VMWare started investing in multiple ways in the security space: (August 2007) VMWare signs an OEM agreement with Shavlik Technologies to use their patching engine into the VI 3.5 Update Manager (August 2007) VMWare acquired Determina (February 2008) VMWare announces VMsafe With Blue Lane VMWare reaches nine acquisitions (at least counting the public ones). The last one ...

At its conference VMworld 2008 in Las Vegas last month, VMWare previewed the next phase of its virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) technologies announcing it as VMWare View . On stage Steve Herrod, the company’s CTO, unveiled a partnership with the startup Teradici to develop a more efficient remote desktop protocol. It seems that this may be not enough, maybe because of the time needed to have a commercial product, so VMWare took some extra steps to boost Microsoft RDP performance today. The company signed a license agreement with the thin computing vendor Wyse Technologies to use its technologies TCX-MMR (for multimedia) and TCX-MDS (for multi-display) to enhance the virtual desktop experience in VMWare View products. ...

Hi guys I need a new license of Vista64 for my new MacBook and I was wondering which version was for me. I'm undecided between OEM and Student Edition. I'd like to install it on my Mac using Bootcamp, but I also would like to virtualize it with VMWare (the same Bootcamp partition). I heard that some version of vista have Varitualization limits, can you confirm? Basically I'd like to know if I should go with OEM o Student Edition of Vista64 (probabily HomePremium). Thanks ...

Virtualization software can help you run programs that your native Linux distro wouldn't. While Linux users have many virtualization options, none comes close to the all-encompassing VMWare Workstation 6.5. Introduced last month, VMWare Workstation 6.5 continues the tradition of outshining and outpacing the competition with a host of useful new features, and boldly goes where no virtualization software has gone before -- into the realm of virtual machines with accelerated 3-D graphics. Despite the advances, some of the new features are still in beta, so Workstation 6.5 might not be the best virtualization option for everyone. ...
