In April, Paramount Pictures walked away from a deal to air its movies on pay-TV channel Showtime. Instead, it announced a plan to start up a rival channel with two other longtime Showtime suppliers, MGM and Lionsgate. To the uninitiated, that might have appeared a nugget of passing interest, as in: Great, another movie channel ... I guess. ... Source: www.nypost.com --- 2 days ago

To add to the confusion about industry consortiums, another new advocacy group called Arts+Labs has been formed by heavyweights in the entertainment, technology and telecom spaces to lobby for enhanced content on secure and reliable networks, fair compensation for content creators and to steer consumers away from spyware and spam. VIACOM, NBC Universal, the Songwriters Guild of America, Cisco Systems, *AT&T and Microsoft* are all part of the new organization that bills itself as "a collaboration between creators and innovators who regard the internet as a vibrant town center where all consumers can safely choose from a vast array of digital products, entertainment and services", essentially a tech meet Hollywood kind of consortium. Missions include consumer awareness of "legal, safe, affordable and innovative entertainment content on the internet" and of "net pollution, which includes viruses, malware, hack attacks, spam, illegal file trafficking and other activity that threatens to degrade consumers' internet experience." Of course, net management is a central issue, although underplayed for now. Then again have all of these companies and organizations been fully behind the concept of the web not tilting in favor of one application, technology or thought over another? Web-filtering technology is another area the group is expected to work on intently. The group will be co-chaired by Mike McCurry, former White House press security ... While Disney is quite often painted as the leader of the pack when it comes to ridiculous and draconian copyright-related proposals, much of that can be attributed to former CEO Michael Eisner, who helped push for the Bono Copyright Extension Act to "protect" Mickey Mouse. Eisner, famously, loves to talk about the history of intellectual property law -- though, he's almost entirely wrong , attributing much of copyright law to Abraham Lincoln, who had nothing to do with it. After Eisner left, Robert Iger took over, and for a while, it seemed as if he might actually understand that he needed to learn how to embrace new technologies and not treat users as criminals. Apparently Iger doesn't fully believe that, though. Joining with previous statements made by the folks in charge of NBC Universal and VIACOM , Iger was recently in London saying that ISPs should ban users who are caught downloading unauthorized material . While UK ISPs have agreed to send out industry warning letters, so far they've resisted banning users from the internet. Iger, however, thinks that's not enough: "We are simply asking for people who are downloading illegal files to get a warning initially then to get their service cut off." He then falsely suggests that ISPs are effectively relying on their content to be effective. This is the lie that Big Content likes to tell itself. That it's really Hollywood content that gets people online, rather than communication ... Source: www.moreover.com --- 27 days ago

Filed under: Industry , New content Although VIACOM, Paramount, Lionsgate and MGM pitched in together to form a premium movie channel a while back , the group is now trying to secure itself a place more towards the digital-basic service level to the hefty tune of $1 - $2 per subscriber, per month. Even with market exclusivity and considerable studio marketing muscle on the table, though, we doubt there will be much traction among MSOs at this price point; and honestly, we'd hate to see the content chopped up with ads, um, ad nauseum. Worst of all, though, is that we imagine HD could be one of the first items to get the axe if this service is a digital-basic offering. Don't get us wrong -- we're not looking to spend more money every month -- but we are willing to pay for a quality experience. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments ... Greg Hughes, chief financial officer for New York City's largest commercial landlord, SL Green, said this morning that VIACOM, which has leases for 1.5 million square feet at 1515 Broadway, most of which expire in 2010, is likely to renew. "We’re have ongoing negotiations with VIACOM for what seems like five years now," Mr. Hughes said, while giving a presentation at the Merrill Lynch Global Real Estate Conference. "There is a renewal option that comes up that they have that they need to exercise in December of this year. I think if you talked to them they would tell you they like the building very much…" "They’ll likely exercise their renewal and then there’ll be a spirited discussion over what fair market value reps," Mr. read more » ...
