SAN DIEGO — 8 a.m. PDT So much has already been blogged and written about Barack Obama’s new energy plan — unveiled, it appears to put a substantive policy barrier between his campaign and the rising tide of polling data in favor of offshore and Arctic National Wildlife Refuge drilling — but hadn’t seen [...] ...

A local veterans counseling agency is looking at the city-owned GAR Hall as a possible site for homeless transitional housing. North Shore Veterans Counseling Services has been searching for years for a good place to set up the housing, which would get homeless veterans back in a home. “We are looking around for a building to do housing,” said Lynn Moran, executive director of the counseling agency. “We are just in the beginning stages of looking for property.” Currently, the group doesn’t own or operate any housing, she said. Moran said the group eyed the GAR Hall because the city has considered selling it and it must be used for veterans. “We would be an organization that fits that profile,” she said. North Shore Veterans Counseling Services is headquartered in the Cummings Center and helps veterans with everything from employment training to benefits help for veterans on the North Shore. It isn’t clear how much work it would take to make the GAR Hall into housing. The building would likely need a “total rehab,” she said, but an architect or engineer has not looked at it and the group hasn’t considered whether it might want to instead tear it down. The group once considered a housing project at the former Danvers State Hospital but decided against it because it wasn’t near public transportation. The GAR Hall is downtown and near services and public transportation. Mayor Bill Scanlon first proposed selling the GAR Hall three yea ...

The first game in a new league can be intimidating under any circumstances. Try doing it under the big lights before nearly 70,000 fans on the NFL stage. "I don't remember who we played, but I know I was nervous," said Patriots linebacker Adalius Thomas of his first NFL exhibition game back in 2000. Thomas was with the Ravens then, and it's that same club from Baltimore that visits Gillette Stadium tomorrow night (Ch. 5, 7:30 p.m.) for New England's first preseason game this year. "The game was so much faster," continued Thomas. "You can't really imagine the tempo. For the rookies and the guys playing their first preseason game, I can only imagine what they're going through because there's so much you're trying to remember and keep in your head. You're under the lights, your family's here, your first NFL game, it'll be a lot of nervous energy. But if they calm down and let the game come to them they'll be all right." Asked if he had given that advice to the Pats' rookies, said "No, not yet," then joked, "let them watch this interview." Thomas may want to be a little more proactive in settling his young teammates' nerves. "It's a little scary," admitted rookie linebacker Shawn Crable of making his NFL debut. "But you've got to play. So I just hope that I know what I'm doing and I'm in the right positions and that I perform well." There was a wide range of emotions conveyed by the players as the long-awaited gameday finally approaches. Th ...

You'll recall that last year, right around this time of the year, Cam Cameron decided to let many of his veteran players basically relax during much of the preseason.  Some VETS saw a few series, while others didn't even see the field in some games. This year, that will not be the case.  While we don't know how much any particular player will play, we should all expect the entire team to see action in these exhibition games.  Says Sparano: "We need to be in a game, be in a game environment. We need to get as many guys into uniform as we can get in uniform, being in that locker room together, coming out of that tunnel together. (We need to) be on the sideline together, go through whatever we're going to go through in that game together." I couldn't have said it better myself.  I agree 100% with Sparano's line of logic here.  Sparano also talked a little about how coming off of a 1-15 season, this team needs a culture change.  I think that we've already seen some of that change in culture in terms of the offseason training program as well as the way training camp has been handled so far by this coaching staff.  Playing all the players who are able to physically play is the next logical step in this culture change. DEFENSIVE LINE ROTATION Speaking of Saturday's preseason opener against the Buccaneers at Dolphin Stadium, I wanted to quickly touch on something other than the QB competition that deserves some attention. The one position that ...
