Forty-one wasp allergic patients were treated with sublingual (SLIT group) or subcutaneous (SCIT group) ultrarush immunotherapy with Vespula VENOM extract. All patients underwent skin tests and serum specific IgE and IgG4 detection before enrolment and after 6, 12 and 24 months of immunotherapy. The SLIT group consisted of 21 (6 females and 15 males) patients who received increasing doses of Vespula VENOM (Aquagen, ALK-Abello) until the final dose of 30 drops of extract in 3 hours, containing 100,000 SQ-U/ml. The maintenance dose was of 10 drops of pure VENOM extract 3 times a week, for a total dose of 100,000 SQ-U weekly (corresponding to 100 micrograms of VENOM extract). We developed a semi-mechanistic model of the clotting cascade in order to explore the effects of the procoagulant toxin from taipan VENOM on this system as well as the effects of antivenom. Simulations of the time course in the change of clotting factors were compared to data collected from taipan envenomed patients. The model accurately predicted the observed concentration of clotting factors over time following taipan envenomation. Investigations from the model indicated that the upper limit of the half-life of the procoagulant toxin was 1h. Simulations from the model also suggest that antivenom has negligible effect on reducing the recovery time of the coagulation profile unless administered almost immediately after envenomation. Ok, here we go: On the left side you see Hulk (the green guy ) He is in a symbiosis with VENOM (the black alien costume spiderman used to have) and on the right side you see (guess who) SPIDERMAN! Ok, once again, image was painted in Photoshop with a intuos 3 Wacom Tablet. I had hella fun painting it as i was a huge spiderman geek when i was 10+ At that time i discovered my first Spiderman issues with Todd mcfarlane art and instantly became a big fan... now that i think of it he must be an old man now! A reader takes me to task for the "VENOM and sarcasm" laced into my response to Jacob Weisberg's piece on how social conservatives have supposedly sold out family values for the sake of pro-life absolutism. It's true - I was a bit venomous. Hopefully it won't become a habit. I generally try to steer clear of overheated rhetoric where abortion is concerned, since I know my own views on the subject are somewhat outside the American mainstream, and I suspect that many (if not most) of my readers don't share them; given these consideration, I don't think there's to be gained for anybody if I write about the topic in a constant state of moralistic dudgeon. But sometimes a touch of VENOM is appropriate. Many defenders of the current abortion laws want to make a distinction between being pro-choice - a position that treats abortion as a tragic practice that can't be regulated without violating a woman's fundamental right to privacy - and being actively pro-abortion. That's fair enough. But Weisberg wasn't making a pro-choice argument; he was making the case for abortion as a positive social good, a necessary building block of a healthy society, a practice that makes stable families possible. Worse, he didn't have the cojones to come right out and say it; instead, he wanted to pass the pro-abortion buck to the pro-family Right, casting his argument as something conservatives ought to believe if they were really serious about the importanc ...
