Finally, Napoleon McCallum will get to see his alma mater play football in Las Vegas. The only downside is that he'll have to wait a little while. But at least he knows it'll happen. The UNLV football program recently inked a four-year deal to play Navy, though the series won't begin until the Midshipmen come to Las Vegas in 2014. "Either way, it's pretty cool," said McCallum, a former Navy running back who now lives and works in Las Vegas. "We've got a lot of (alumni) in San Diego, and we've got a lot of people from the Navy who are here in Las Vegas." McCallum, now the Director of Community Development for the Las Vegas Sands Corporation , is also a member of the Las Vegas Bowl committee. He said it tried to get the Midshipmen in Town for the bowl game two years ago, but Navy already had committed to face Utah in the Poinsettia Bowl in -- makes sense -- San Diego. The chances are good that McCallum will be in Las Vegas long enough to see the Midshipmen play at Sam Boyd Stadium, as he's pretty satisfied with his life's work at the moment. His six-year NFL career -- spent entirely with the Raiders -- was cut short due to a nasty knee injury in 1994. "It's all in the past," McCallum said of the injury several football fans remember. "People bring it up every once in awhile. It's a good story." Nowadays most of the people who encounter McCallum are too young to have heard the tale. He helps organize events such as one a couple weeks ago ...

ET has the latest... Actor Gary Coleman was involved in a car accident in Utah in which a 24-year-old pedestrian suffered minor injuries, the Salt Lake Tribune reports.  Coleman, 40, was backing out of a bowling alley in a Town about one hour south of Salt Lake City around midnight Friday when his truck hit another car and a pedestrian identified as Colt Reston , the Tribune quotes police Lt. Bill Wright as saying. Reston was taken to a hospital where he was treated for minor injuries, Wright said. Witnesses told police the actor became irritated after Reston photographed him and the two argued in the bowling alley before moving outside.  ...

Bargaining for Eden by Stephen Trimble University of California Press 319 pages, $29.95 The contemporary story of the American West is being written in Town halls across the region where neighbors stand at odds with one another over their vision for the prized landscapes that surround them. Every area has its Eden besieged by developers, and each one inevitably becomes buried in controversy, and sometimes scandal. For author Stephen Trimble, the Eden was northern Utah's Snowbasin, and its controversies, complete with a billionaire developer, backroom Congressional deals and the Olympic scandals that would soon mar the 2002 Salt Lake Olympics, outdo most. Stephen Trimble will present his book at the Tattered Cover (LoDo) on October 4 (2 p.m.) and at the Utah Humanities Book Festival at the Salt Lake City Main Library on October 25. ...

We’re only one week into the college football season, but there’s already a real temptation to speculate on the future of the Ducks and Beavers. For Oregon, the immediate future looks bright. Continued from: A win for one is a win for all! While Fresno State finished off UCLA and Navy shot Wake Forest out of the water, TCU got humbled by Oklahoma.  Our champion of the week was put down in a shameful and humiliating defeat.  By in large the assault is finished.  Our destiny is mostly out of our hands. But fate, the cruel mistress, appears to be on our side.  The ACC rose again only to get put back down.  The PAC 10 was shaken critically from within.  But are our hopes being raised only to be shattered and stabbed into our backs? The fall out from local squabbles will shape the future now.  Two brothers, rivals since birth, stand side by side looking for their day of glory.  One test remains from the outside, and then it is time to take care of things at home. Oregon State has felled a giant, and comes into Town hungry for more.  The favored in the game, Utah must hold their ground.  The scent of revenge is in the air and last week’s giant slayer may make for an excellent statement. After this week we march slowly on to the inevitable finally, brother against brother.  But for now we continue, and for now it remains, A WIN FOR ONE IS A WIN FOR ALL!   Hit List: Ohio State Wisconsin ...

Grand Island civic leader Ted George has been honored by his family through the donation of a park bench at George Park along Independence Avenue. "We shape our lives not by what we carry with us, but by what we leave behind," an inscription on the bench states. For George, that means years of service to the Northwest Community Baseball League. He and then-wife Jean operated a concession stand for about 20 years during the ball games. "We called it the Short Stop," George recalled. "We had dime candy and 15-cent pop. I just gave the store away, but we had everyone in Town out here. "It was open every day there was a game or practice," George said. George's granddaughter, Angie Runyan of Hastings, came up with the idea for the bench. They presented a picture of the bench to George for his 80th birthday March 16, but the bench was set by parks staff over the summer. "It's where the concession stand was," Runyan said. "I remember summers helping out here. This was our home away from home." George's children, Sheri Kelly of Hastings; and sons, Bob George of Utah, Mike George of Lincoln and Randy George of Texas all contributed toward the bench along with their respective families. George has nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. "This is a great honor," George said as family gathered at the park on a recent Saturday afternoon. "It takes a lot and shows a lot of family love and respect.” ...
