The issue I feel strongly about is Socialized Medicine. If you are for this, I ask you to see my POV/Rationale as to why we cannot go for Universal Healthcare. Universal Healthcare would not leave any room for new medical innovations and pretty soon we'd see hospitals re-using needles. I have seen hospitals in Europe, Russia and elsewhere and they are SCARY. Trust me, nobody wants to go them! I mean if it is free, then how good could it really be? People have to pay thousands and thousands of dollars for Private Healthcare in countries that have Universal Healthcare systems to get qualtiy healtcare. Please don't take offense to anything I write here, I just don't want to become like the rest of the world and I'll tell you why. 94% of United States residents have health care coverage or at least access to it. How do I know this? The BlueCross BlueShield Association claims that as many as 14 million of the uninsured adults and children who were qualified for government programs in 2004 had not enrolled, meaning they didnât take advantage of the opportunities given to them [1]. This could be out of choice, but it could also mean that we need to do a better job of educating people about the available programs. Clearly, there are options here that can be addressed. If only 6% of people lack health care, this hardly calls for a complete overhaul of the system, but it does say we need to make some changes. Universal Health Care means ... I decided to start a new thread because the others take a completely different spin. I am by no means well versed on this subject, but from my limited understanding Universal Healthcare isn't a bad thing. I personally do not mind paying higher taxes if my Healthcare is already paid for. I'm a student now, but when I did have health insurance I rarely went to the doctor becuase of the deductible and I was already paying at lease $200 either a check or month. I also don't see how Universal Healthcare would be bad for hospitals, to me that means that the hospitals will get their money. I'm from Illinois and just this year one hospital nearly closed because they weren't getting paid for services rendered. I also saw in some threads that people would "take advantage" of Universal Healthcare? How does one take advantage of Healthcare? And if more people did get regular check ups would that likely decrease the need for hospitalization? Wouldn't it be under preventive medicine (I thought that was what we nurses and soon to be nurses were promoting) These are just my thoughts. If you disagree that's fine, you are entitled to. I'm for it and would gladly pay the higher taxes, at least then I know some of the money that is taken from me will directly help me. ... Source: www.dakotavoice.com --- 23 days ago

Do you think Universal health care should be part of our way of life, as it is in many other countries? Will it work? Why or why not? I believe it can and would work. Our taxes will not be raised any more than without it, they can be simply redistributed (Iraq). I cannot fathom why whether we have Healthcare or not depends on our job. It doesn't even matter if we have a job anymore, it depends on our employer! And more and more employers are either raising premiums and contributions or not offering heathcare altogether, even if you work 50-60 hours a week. All children are entitled to a free education but not Healthcare. Is this not insane? We are not expected to pay for police, fire or other 911 services - they are incorporated into our tax system. Universal Healthcare works quite well in many places (eg, the United Kingdom). Why not here? Or do I over-simplify? Tell me how you feel about this very topical issue. ... Since Healthcare is an issue in politics these days, here's the big question on the issue: Why should we even consider having Healthcare for everyone? Healthcare is a service, and just like any other service one receives, the provider expects to be paid by the consumer. We pay for our own gasoline, car repairs, haircuts etc. and if our budget doesn't allow certain services we forego them. So why look at Healthcare any differently? If you want it, you must budget for it. If your employer doesn't offer a health plan, seek other employment. If you can't get another job, then eliminate something from your budget (e.g. a car) to pay for it yourself. If the government guarantees Healthcare for everyone then it creates a system of socialized medicine, in which some of us (most of us in Folsom would fit in the subsidizing group) subsidize Healthcare for person who didn't budget for it themselves. Furthermore, with that system comes a lower standard of care for many as those of us with good health plans get the same reduced service plan applicable to the subsidized group. ...
