A Montana state judge is ruling that the identities of anonymous commenters posted on news sites are protected by a state's media shield law. While Wednesday's decision does not carry legal weight with other judges across the United States, media lawyers said Thursday they believed it was the first ruling of its kind. Only Wyoming does not have a shield law protecting a news outfit from divulging unpublished material in state investigations. The ruling came in a case in which a Montana man with political aspirations sued another man for libel and slander in Montana state court. The aspiring politico wanted to know whether the person he was suing was the anonymous commenter on the Billings Gazette he claimed was belittling him. District Court Judge G. Todd Baugh, of Yellowstone County, issued the ruling from the bench Wednesday, according to the Billings Gazette . There is no federal shield law protecting reporters' unpublished material in federal investigations. Who says an airline won’t listen these days? United ( UAUA ) is reversing a decision to end complimentary hot-meal service on European flights from its Washington hub, following a storm of criticism. “The response from you and many of our corporate customers, even before we launched the test, told us what we would have undoubtedly learned had we proceeded – you value our hot meal service in economy class for international flights,” United’s chief customer officer, Graham Atkinson, said in a Sept. 2 statement. (I would submit that 'value' may be too strong a word here. More likely it is just that removal of hot food en route to Europe is seen as taking the service degradation too far, even for the current era.) “In this environment, where higher costs driven by volatile fuel prices are now the norm, we must continue to tailor products and services so that we provide you with choices and competitive fares. As such, we will continue to be proactive in testing new ideas.” So, expect the service erosion to continue in more modest ways. But it’s somewhat heartening to see that this step was too draconian to pass. I suspect that large United accounts – the metro D.C. area is full of defense and Tech-related firms that fly lots of people across the Atlantic – rapidly noted how their people would likely enjoy the coach experience on Air France, Lufthansa, Virgin, British Airways, etc. That, of course, is a prospect United did not want to test j ...

Latin American could have a lot to learn from Finland, argues Miami Herald columnist Andres Oppenheimer. Here, he details a recent visit to Finland, which "ranks first among 179 countries in Transparency International's index of the least corrupt nations in the world (the United States is No. 20); No. 1 in Freedom House's ranking of the world's most democratic countries (the U.S. ranks No. 15); No. 1 in the world in 15-year-old students' standardized test scores in science (the U.S. ranks No. 29), and is among the 10 most competitive economies in the World Economic Forum's annual competitiveness index (the U.S. topped the list this year)." Oppenheimer quizzed Finnish President Tarja Halonen on the secret to the country's success in an interview, during which she said: ''I can sum it up in three words: education, education and education.'' Something as simple as having really good teachers has helped the country develop into a manufacturer of high-Tech products that sell for high prices around the world, such as mobile phones. "A small country of 5.3 million, which only two decades ago was by most measures the poorest country in northern Europe, Finland also boasts the headquarters of the world's biggest cellphone maker -- Nokia -- and cutting-edge paper and pulp-technology firms," writes Oppenheimer. "Finland could be an excellent example for Latin American commodity exporters who want to become high-technology producers. They cou ...

Before even starting this post, can we just pause for a moment and consider what would have happened to that unpatriotic, American-hating Muslim the Democrats nominated for president if he had been part of a secessionist group led by a man who once said he was “an Illinoisan, not an American”? To borrow Clarence Thomas’ famous phrase, it would been a high-Tech lynching. But here comes Sarah Palin, former member of the Alaskan Independence Party and current Republican nominee for vice president of the United States. ABC's Jake Tapper reports : Officials of the Alaskan Independence Party say that Palin was once so independent, she was once a member of their party, which, since the 1970s, has been pushing for a legal vote for Alaskans to decide whether or not residents of the 49th state can secede from the United States. And while McCain's motto -- as seen in a new TV ad -- is "Country First," the AIP's motto is the exact opposite -- "Alaska First -- Alaska Always." Lynette Clark, the chairman of the AIP, tells ABC News that Palin and her husband, Todd, were members in 1994, even attending the 1994 statewide convention in Wasilla. Clark was AIP secretary at the time. Oops. The Atlantic’s Marc Ambinder clarifies that Palin’s association with the AIP is not ancient history, either, for she addressed the organization earlier this year : Basically, the AIP wants a vote on secession. According to the organizations' ...
