Bill O'Brien from InfoWorld provides consumers with an important tool, a buyer's guide. The Ultra Mobile PCs buyer’s guide looks at products from Amtek, ASUS, Fujitsu, Gigabyte, HP, MSI, OQO, Panasonic, Roan Digital, Samsung, TabletKiosk, Vye, and WiBrain. Classifying UMPCs is a challenge. Interestingly the author gives the Microsoft definition and disputes it by asking about a keyboard. No self-respecting Umpc user uses a keyboard. The power is in the pen. Further, the author says in the last paragraph on the first page, “they're not PCs.” The author is confused. Yes, UMPCs are fully functional PCs; not devices. In fact, Umpc stands for Ultra Mobile PCs. The ending of the acronym gives the clue. The problem with classifying the models in the guide is that several are not UMPCs; they are nice products but they have keyboards and do not operate with the Windows OS; some are devices and not personal computers. In fact, what the author calls notebook UMPCs are netbooks. I do agree that the MID definition from Intel suggest Linux is a key factor in comparing MID and Umpc; UMPCs are Windows-based and MIDs are Linux. Additionally, the consumer may consider a device different from a full PC. Instead, consider this guide a nice look at UMPCs, MIDs, and netbooks. Anyway, let's get to the meat and potatos. Initially, impressions were quite positive, as the reviewer noted that build quality was "superb," the size was adorably small and the display satisfied all expectations. As for sheer performance, the Menlow-based rig excelled as it churned through applications with no huge lag issues; however, all that computing made the unit exceptionally warm, though it did remain quiet even when breaking a sweat. Battery life was shorter than advertised (only 2.5 hours), but aside from that, there wasn't a whole lot to gripe about. Think it's too good to be true? If you're going to build a Umpc, you need Atoms but they could be in short supply, if a report in Taiwan's Digitimes is to be believed. Production of the Intel processor that's currently fuelling much of the Umpc boom seems to have stalled, if LCD orders are anything to go by. With demand for tiny laptops booming makers of 7 to 10in LCD screens were expecting a bumper July but instead they've seen orders fall... ...
In line with Matthew's list of netbooks on (or soon to be on) the market, the good folks over at UMPCPortal has just received one of the more unique "netbooks" called the VyePC Mini-V S41. Like the Kohjinsha line, the S41 offers a convertible tablet form factor that includes a DVD drive. On top of that, it offers an array of buttons on either side of the screen, much like a PSP or other handheld gaming device. Check out the initial impressions and a photo gallery here. At the same presentation that APC mag learnt about the upcoming Toshiba ULPC, Will Maher over at PC Authority managed to get some hands-on time with a Umpc prototype from the laptop manufacturer. Running on an Atom processor with Vista installed, a 5.6-inch screen and 64GB of SSD memory, the prototype also features a built in GPS chip, thanks to Toshiba figuring out how they can make antennas follow a curved surface. The prototype is unlikely to ever make it into consumers hands, however, as Toshy feel that the 5.6-inch screen is too small for practical use. PC Authority agreed, saying that the onscreen, touch-sensitive keyboard took up 2/3 of the screen space when typing. Still, it's a fairly cute device that looks like it has a bit of potential.
