After 7 years, the Bush administration got its first war crimes conviction but not of anyone who plotted the 9/11 attacks, but that of Osama bin Laden's driver. Yemeni national Salim Ahmed Hamdan's crime was to chauffeur bin Laden in Afghanistan, which the government argued allowed bin Laden to plot attacks against the United States. Hamdan was convicted for material support for terrorism and could spend the rest of his life in prison. In fact, whatever sentence a court may determine, the Bush administration claims that it has the authority to hold him indefinitely as an "enemy combatant" until the cessation of hostilities in the so-called "war on terror." Hamdan, who has a fourth-grade education and was earning $200 a month as one of Osama bin Laden's drivers, has been detained for almost seven years now. It was Hamdan's case in 2006 that led the Supreme Court to rule that President Bush lacked the authority to constitute military tribunals, but Congress subsequently enacted the Military Commissions Act (MCA) to re-constitute those tribunals, rendering Hamdan's victory worthless to him. I observed Hamdan's trial in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba for Human Rights First. At trial, a parade of government criminal investigators testified that Hamdan was not involved in any terrorist attacks, such as the USS Cole Bombing, the Kenya embassy bombings, and or even 9/11. But Hamdan was charged with conspiracy and providing material support to a ter ... Source: www.aawsat.com --- 68 days ago

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice marked the anniversary of the bombings of the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania saying they didn't destroy our spirit. At a State Department ceremony marking the 10th anniversary of the bombings in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam, Rice said Thursday the events can now be viewed in a different light. On that dark day 10 years ago the bombings of our embassies seemed merely to be the senseless violence of evil men, an organization called al-Qaida, Rice said. When seen from today, however, 10 years later, after the Bombing of the World Trade Center in 1993, the attack on the Khobar Towers in 1996, the attack on the USS Cole in 2000 and, of course, the terror of Sept. ... We already knew that 15 out of the 19 suspected hijackers on 9/11 were Saudi Arabian. Now we learn that the Pentagon today says that Abdal-Rahim al-Nashiri, a Saudi Arabian is being charged with the Bombing of the U.S.S. Cole in 2000. He faces the death penalty. CIA Director Michael Hayden said this year that al-Nashiri was waterboarded in 2002 and 2003 while being interrogated in secret prisons. al-Nashiri says he confessed to being a part of the Bombing only because he was tortured by the U.S. If 16 out of 20 terrorists that have attacked the U.S. are from Saudi Arabia, why have we not attacked that country? Why Afganistan? Why Iraq? Why now possibly Iran? If it is not already clear to you that this is all about power and oil and not about terrorists, you may want to open your eyes. ... Yemeni born Salim Ahmed Hamdan, a Gitmo detainee who is known for being Usama bin Laden's (UBL) personal bodyguard and driver, was convicted by a military tribunal of supporting terrorism. Salim was found guilty of five counts of supporting terrorism, but was not convicted of conspiracy. Hamdan was known to be in the company of UBL in Afghanistan while he planned and funded 9/11. Salim traveled to Afghanistan with Nasser al-Bahri A.K.A. Abu Jandal, who would later become his brother-in-law. The two made their way to a camp run by UBL and listened for 3 days about an upcoming war against the West and decided to stay with the then fledgling al-Qa'ida (AQ) organization. Although Salim only had the equivalent of a fourth grade education, his knowledge of car mechanics led to his choice as UBL's driver. The Yemeni became UBL's personal driver in 1996 and stayed with the notorious terrorist leader until Salim's capture in 2001. He was caught at a Northern Alliance roadblock in Afghanistan in November of 2001 with two surface to air missiles in his vehicle. Bahri was rounded up as a suspect in the U.S.S. Cole terrorist Bombing. He was later released after renouncing violence and is said to have provided intelligence concerning AQ. Hamdan and his lawyers have challenged his captivity by the Bush administration, taking the case all the way to the Supreme Court. Hamdan, A.K.A. The Hamdan War Crimes Trial: An Illusion of Justice The Huffington Post August 7, 2008 After 7 years, the Bush administration got its first war crimes conviction but not of anyone who plotted the 9/11 attacks, but that of Osama bin Laden's driver. During the RNC convention last night, they played a video that was supposed to be a tribute to the victims of 9/11. It opened with pictures of the Iranian hostage crisis and the narrator saying: "The first attack occured in Iran." Huh? Iran had nothing to do with 9/11, especially since Iran is a shia country, and al qaeda is a sunni organization. But most of all, how does that in any way pay tribute to the VICTIMS? They then cut to images of the Bombing on kenya, somalia, and the USS Cole, and then to a crowd in the middle east waving guns around, while the narrator says: "They grew ever more bold. Their call was, 'On those who believe in God, and hopes for reward--To obey God's command to kill Americans.' fading to the video of bin Laden firing a gun. Then they fade into an image of one of the towers engulfed in smoke while the narrator says: "And kill us they did. This time on American soil. The date was September 11th--9/11." And then a violent burst of orange flames as the second plane hit with a musical crescendo. I know people who died that day, and I know rescue workers who will never be the same. To call this a tribute to the victims of 9/11 is a complete disgrace to those same victims. It was a propaganda piece designed to inflame anti-muslim sentiments, as well as to demonize Iran and make it sound like they are the same, or at least no different than the people who attacked us on 9/11. Does the GOP have any shame? To use (or ... Source: www.topix.com --- 30 days ago
