Filed under: Laptops We've been seeing in the wild shots of E-Lead's Noahpad for months on end , but on some fateful trunk lid likely to be halfway across the planet, this undeniably peculiar UMPC has finally arrived to an end user. Oddly enough, said user couldn't even wait to get the thing inside, and as you can clearly above, this unboxing took place entirely on the trunk of a car. We can't determine what's more interesting here -- the unit itself, or the totally cute Baby In Car sticker just up there on the right. For a while the Asus Eee PC ruled the UMPC roost, with it’s quirky but cool design, good features, and most importantly, LOW price point. Until now. If you were a big fan of the U810 UMPC, then you will likely be a fan of Fujitsu’s update to it, the U820. Right now, the device is in the hands of the FCC, who is putting thought all kinds of tests to keep America safe. If it passes, we should be seeing this [...] ...

It’s only fair to look at Samsung’s competition after we’ve seen their new Q1 Ultra UMPC versions today. I am talking about Wibrain and their updated L1 UMPC. The new L1 from Wibrain will have an Intel Atom processor and HSDPA mobile broadboand. It will come in various colors and it will have a microSD slot. You can choose between 30GB or 60GB HDD or a 64GB SSD. Unlinke the Q1 Ultra running on Vista, the L1 will be powered by either Windows XP or a Linux OS. Battery life is said to be up to 6 hours of browsing although that’s not clearly known yet. The L1 from Wibrain should be available sometime in October. Availability in the USA has been confirmed, but there aren’t any prices for it just yet. This isn’t a next generation Q1 Ultra here but we do have two new UMPC versions from Samsung. Released today, the Q1U-CMXP has an HSDPA 3G integrated cellular modem , and the Q1UP-V which is an Ultra Premium Q1 with preinstalled Vista Business. I understand the need for new. I don’t understand the need for Vista. Besides that, there are lots of connectivity options available: 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, Ethernet and a WWAN modem that connects to the AT&T Broadband Connect network. The new Samsung versions will sell for $1,499 and $1,449. Apparently the 3G version will cost more than the Vista version . Panasonic’s CF-U1 UMPC is neither cheap nor particularly attractive, but if you’re looking for a rugged handheld with a 5.6-inch touchscreen, QWERTY keyboard (not shown in the version pictured) and the ability to survive four-foot drops and a variety of unpleasant environments then you may just have found your ideal machine. UMPC Portal’s Chippy has had some hands-on time with the U1 and the initial reports are very promising: smooth performance from the 1.33GHz Atom and “high efficiency build” of XP, “amazing” WiFi and Bluetooth, and the sort of hot-swappable battery options all notebooks should really have. In fact, the U1 was promising 3hrs of battery life, with WiFi on, with a single battery pack attached. When the second was added that jumped to 8hrs. Together the battery packs add up to 20Wh, and since the whole system is fanless and uses solid-state storage (16GB or 32GB) it’s silent, too. Considering the $2,499 sticker price, not many consumers are going to get their hands on the U1. Hopefully Panasonic recognise the desire for some of the features it offers, however, and include them in a mainstream UMPC. Fujitsu’s U2010 , the convertible UMPC based on Intel’s Atom CPU, has made it to the FCC with a few testing photos and a new name. As could have been predicted the UMPC will launch in the US as the U820, where it will have a 5.6-inch, 1,280 x 800 resolution touchscreen and six-row QWERTY keyboard. Given that the FCC label claims the U820 “contains UMTS” it looks as though the devices 3G WWAN modem has made it over too. Using the Z530 Atom CPU with 1GB of RAM, the U820 will have WiFi a/b/g/n and optional Bluetooth, together with 10/100 ethernet. Storage is via a 1.8-inch 4,200rpm hard-drive, and expandable with built-in SD and CF slots. There’s also a built-in mono speaker and digital microphone, together with a single USB 2.0 port on the UMPC itself. The docking station gets four USB 2.0 ports, one VGA and one LAN port. The standard battery is a mere 2-cell 2900mAh unit, whereas the extended battery is a 4-cell 5800mAh version. No word on price or availability in the US, although its predecessor, the Fujitsu U810, currently starts at around $999.
