Approximately 50 Turkey lunches were recalled from Scituate’s Meals on Wheels program last week in a regionwide scare that affected five elder service agencies in the state. According to South Shore Elder Services Nutrition Director Blair Bourque, the lunches were recalled from the program in Scituate on Wednesday, July 30. He said the move wasn't in response to any illnesses but “strictly a precautionary measure.” Meals from Canton-based Bateman Catering were recalled after volunteers in Marshfield and New Bedford reported strange odors from the lunches. “Once Bateman got wind of it, they felt compelled to pull the entire meal,” Bourque said. In Scituate, the hot lunch program is run by South Shore Elder Services, not the council on aging. According to Suzanne Condon, director of the bureau of environmental health within the state Department of Public Health, the state had reports last week of two people who had eaten the meals getting sick, with one developing diarrhea and the other seeking a doctor’s care. At least 15 of the seniors in Plymouth and Kingston who had the Turkey dinners delivered at home consumed them without apparent ill affects. Council on aging staff in those towns contacted most of the home delivery recipients immediately after learning about possible problems with the meal late Wednesday morning and warned them not to eat the lunch, Plymouth COA Director Kim Manion said, and many were contacted before the meal ... The Marshfield Senior Center had to pull its Turkey lunches July 30 after a precautionary recall due to a report —initiated by a senior center volunteer — that the food looked and smelled funny. The center’s lunches are provided by Old Colony Elderly Services, which contracts with Bateman Catering in Canton. The report caused some 4,400 lunches around southeastern Massachusetts to be recalled, and the food is now being tested by the state Department of Public Health. Council on Aging Director Carol Hamilton said 40 people were registered for lunch at the center that day, and there were around 70 clients for the Meals on Wheels program. “This has never happened in the 10 years I’ve worked here,” Hamilton said. “Everybody pitched in to help with this crisis. We pulled the food, and we couldn’t feed our Meals on Wheels people.” Hamilton said several people in the Meals on Wheels program had already eaten the food before it was recalled, as food for the program goes out before lunchtime. She said no one reported any illness. As for the lunch at the senior center, the COA ordered cheese pizza and salads from Marshfield Famous Pizza to replace the Turkey lunch, which included gravy, cranberry sauce, potatoes and vegetables, a multi-grain roll and birthday cake. “The recall came kind of late in the game, so as soon as we found out we went right back out and recalled the food,” Hamilton said. “We did not receive a call until afte ... NEW YORK _ Oil prices jumped back above US$120 a barrel Thursday, rising for the first time in four days after Kurdish rebels reportedly admitted causing a fire at an oil pipeline in Turkey.Light, sweet crude for September delivery advanced $1.64 to US$120.20 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, after earlier rising as high as $121.78. Prices fell to $118.58 on Wednesday.Pro-Kurdish news agency Firat said Kurdish rebels have claimed responsibility for fire on a Turkish section of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline. The fire, which was still burning Thursday, forced workers to shut down two valves along the pipeline as a precaution, halting the flow of all oil being sent to Ceyhan terminal from the east. But officials said shipments were not affected.Still, the report raised the possibility of a long shutdown of the U.S.-backed 1,100-mile pipeline, which can pump slightly more than one million barrels of crude oil per day, or more than one per cent of the world`s daily crude output. If it`s down for a month, that would delay shipment of as much as 30 million barrels of juice, which is a huge chunk even amid this demand destruction we`re seeing, said Jim Ritterbusch, president of energy consultancy Ritterbusch and Associates in Galena, Ill.The market was also eyeing more tension over Iran`s nuclear program. The five permanent UN Security Council members and Germany agreed Wednesday to pursue new sanctions against Iran, which w ... Source: www.balkantravellers.com --- 12 hours ago

NEW YORK _ Oil prices fluctuated Thursday, erasing an earlier rally as growing concerns about falling U.S. demand for energy clashed with supply threats from a fire at a key Turkish pipeline.Light, sweet crude for September delivery rose 21 cents to US$118.79 a barrel in afternoon trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange, but prices were alternating between positive and negative territory. Crude sank more than $6 over the previous three days, bringing prices $30 lower than its July high above $147 a barrel.Oil earlier jumped above $121 a barrel after pro-Kurdish news agency Firat said the separatist group Kurdistan Workers` Party, known as PKK, admitted sabotaging the Turkish section of the critical Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline Tuesday night.Turkey`s state-run Anatolia news agency reported that the fire, which was said to be under control Thursday, could cause the pipeline to be shut down for up to 15 days, stoking supply worries among oil market traders. But those concerns seemed to fade later in the day, prompting some investors to cash in on an increasingly rare oil rally, said Jim Ritterbusch, president of energy consultancy Ritterbusch and Associates in Galena, Ill.It underscores the bearish nature of this market when it can`t respond to seemingly bullish news like the pipeline fire, Ritterbusch said.At the pump, retail gas prices tumbled further overnight.
