SMU needed to play a perfect game to stage the upset of the week against unbeaten Tulsa. Being near-perfect kept the Mustangs close deep into the fourth quarter, but in the end, that simply wasn't enough. Tulsa edged SMU, 37-31 Saturday night at Gerald J. Ford Stadium. Similar to each of SMU's Conference USA matchups this season, a play here and a break there might have produced a different outcome. SMU led by as many as 11 and opened a 31-24 lead on a dynamite 77-yard touchdown reception by junior Emmanuel Sanders. Tulsa took the ensuing kickoff and put together a punishing drive, but defensive tackle Serge Elizee brought the Hurricane to its knees with a sack of Tulsa quarterback David Johnson to set up fourth and 21 at the SMU 33. But Johnson threaded to receiver Trae Johnson, who pulled down a 33-yard touchdown that tied the game 31-31. Then the Mustangs sprouted a turnovers at the worst possible time: a tie game in the fourth quarter. Freshman quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell had his pass intercepted at the SMU 26. First, WR Terrance Wilkerson caught a 10-yard pass from QB Bo Levi Mitchell to give the Mustangs an eight-point lead. But Tulsa marched 69 yards in 46 seconds and scored on a 40-yard touchdown catch by WR Slick Shelley, his second of the game. Then QB David Johnson did an acrobatic routine, flipping into the end zone on a run to secure the two-point play. The score is tied, giving the Mustangs faithful a turn of the stomach.
