Monday, 11:30 AM We're to the end of June, and so far the Tropical Atlantic has been very quiet, aside from Arthur right at the very start of the season. This shouldn't come as a surprise, given the fact that we typically see one named Storm in June every other year. Technically we had one, but barely. Going forward, one ... Dear Tom, If hurricanes are named alphabetically why is the season's first named Storm Bertha and not an "A" name? Ed and Barb Wargo Dear Ed and Barb, Bertha is actually the season's second Storm and that is why its name starts with the letter "B". The first Storm of the season, Tropical Storm Arthur came and went so fast that many people missed it. Arthur formed inland about 45 miles northwest of Belize City, Belize on May 31, moved west across the southern Yucatan and quickly weakened to a Tropical depression by the evening of June 1 near the Guatemala-Mexico border. During its short lifespan Arthur could only muster top winds of 40 m.p.h., but it did produce extensive flooding in Belize from up to 15 inches of rain. Five people perished there and damage was estimated at nearly 80 million dollars. As the 2008 Atlantic Basin hurricane season progresses, the next names to be used will be Cristobal, Dolly, Edouard and Fay. ... Source: www.charlotte.com --- 94 days ago

After a deadly and destructive trip across the Caribbean, Hurricane Ike began to move across the Gulf of Mexico, where it was expected to strengthen before plowing into Texas. And in the Pacific, Tropical Depression Lowell was moving over Mexico's Baja California peninsula. In Texas, Ike was expected to make landfall over the weekend somewhere between Corpus Christi and Houston, creating the potential for heavy punishment for Houston. Some forecasts said Ike could strengthen to a fearsome Category 4 hurricane with winds of at least 131 mph over the Gulf of Mexico, and emergency officials warned it could drive a Storm surge as high as 18 feet. Four counties south and east of Houston have announced mandatory or voluntary evacuations, and authorities began moving weak and chronically ill patients by bus to San Antonio, about 190 miles from Houston. The oil and gas industry was also closely watching Ike, fearing damage to the very heart of its operations. Texas is home to 26 refineries that account for a fourth of U.S. refining capacity, and most are clustered along the Gulf Coast in places such as Houston, Port Arthur and Corpus Christi. Exxon Mobil Corp.'s plant in Baytown, outside Houston, is the nation's largest refinery. Dow Chemical has a huge operation just north of Corpus Christi. Refineries are built to withstand high winds, but flooding can disrupt operations and power outages can shut down equipment for days or weeks. An ex ... Source: www.einnews.com --- 88 days ago

We almost cancelled our trip due to uncertain weather surrounding the first Tropical Storm in the area - but we didn't. Well, that Storm converged with a new weather disturbance and created Tropical Storm Arthur during day 2 of our trip. The weather was ok during our trip from Houston to Belize, ok enough to get us down there..... The second day of the trip, the weather turned from cloudy to awful thunderstorms and wind. We lost power and had it sporatically for the rest of our trip - Saturday through Tuesday. We had no running water when the power was out either. We were in a remote area on the beach in Belize so there was nothing else to do. All excursions were cancelled. During one of our dinners at the hotel/lodge, we all ate by candlelight. We started running out of food, coffee and alcohol by the day we were leaving (thankfully). The countryside and the moutains in Belize flooded due to the flash floods and the rivers overflowed into the beach and ocean. The water was all brown. 10 people died during the Storm. Our friends that traveled with us took their two sons, a 6 year and 8 year old. Their room leaked water. Ours held together during the storms. We had no phone service in the rooms and the only available phone to use in the main lodge part, was out of order. There was no Internet that was working. By the third day, we were basically trapped. The guests that were scheduled to leave, had to stay unless they could come up with ... Find more results for Tropical Storm Arthur on RSSMicro.com |
