At the Newport Folk Festival, former Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio took the "folk challenge" and went completely solo for one of the first times in his career. He played songs from both his solo albums and the Phish's long discography to an ecstatic audience. ...

Sure, Trey Anastasio unveiled a couple of new songs and dusted off a couple of old Phish favorites (”Gotta Jiboo,” “Sand” and “Bug”) at last night’s comeback show with his Trey Anastasio Band at the tiny Williamsburg Music Hall in Brooklyn, New York. But the highlight of his show came during the mellowest point of [...] ...

The jam-band Phish was one of the biggest live acts in the world near the turn of the millennium. The full lineup hasn't played together for about four years, but at Rothbury on Sunday, fans a got a smelt-sized taste of a much-buzzed-about potential reunion for the group. During the solo set by Phish front man Trey Anastasio, he was joined for a few songs by the band's when the Phish bassist, Mike Gordon. ...

Words by: Brian Bavosa | Images by: Dino Perrucci Trey Anastasio Band :: 08.07.08 :: Music Hall Of Williamsburg :: Brooklyn, NY Trey Anastasio With a headlining spot lined up for a few days later at All Points West (read the review here ), Trey Anastasio decided that the best way to shake off the rust that had formed from over a year off the road was to play an extremely intimate warm-up gig at the roughly 400-person capacity Music Hall Of Williamsburg three days prior. With tickets scarcer than a nun at a Las Vegas adult film convention, expectations ran sky-high for the triumphant return of "the original" Trey Anastasio Band , featuring the rhythm section of Tony Markellis and Russ Lawton . For good measure, Anastasio added Ray Paczkowski on the keys, which proved to be a wise move. With tons of ticketless fans outside the venue as early as twelve hours before showtime, the buzz was one that I had not felt since Anastasio played with those other guys. Many had visions of grandeur, hoping to relive Anastasio's first solo tour back in '99, when Lawton and Markellis backed him and helped write some tunes that Phish would eventually call their own. While this night recaptured some of the past magic, it is clear that Anastasio is looking forward and just dying to play music, as many of the new tunes, featuring his patient style of jamming and signature tone, would show. Walking into a revamped club, which used to be North Six, even ...

While we were sweating it out in Grant Park for Lollapalooza this past weekend, friend of the 'Gum and occasional photo contributor Jon Bahr was toughing it out up in Newport, Rhode Island for this year's installment of the annual folk festival. Well, maybe not toughing it out, exactly. Jon describes the scene: The setting of the Newport Folk Fest couldn't be more picturesque and nearly every artist who played couldn't help but mention the scenery. The 8,000 attendees take over the Fort Adams State Park, whose centerpiece is the Fork was built in 1799 and is the largest coastal fortification in the United States. Surrounding that is the stunning view of the massive Newport Bridge (picture the Verrazano bridge) and hundreds upon hundreds of boats filling the coast, anchored watching the stage/screens, and listening to the music perfectly with a "Boat Drink in hand. Anchoring the waterfront scene, of course, was a broad sampling of "folk" with everyone from Steve Earle to Gillian Welch, Trey Anastasio to She & Him. Looks like NPR's archiving the fest, so if you're in the mood for streaming, head here for full sets from She & Him, Gillian Welch, and Jim James with more to come -- and while you listen, enjoy the spread courtesy of Mr. Bahr. ...

Words by: Jake Krolick | Images by: Rod Snyder All Points West Festival :: 08.08.08 - 08.10.08 :: Liberty State Park :: Jersey City, NJ Thom Yorke - Radiohead :: APW 2008 Music permeates my life! Notes ooze from every crack and pore on my body. I'll listen to it in almost any form as long as it moves me. I digest music in huge overflowing bites, sopped up like gravy with a biscuit. With an enduring stare, Lady Liberty guarded the green patch of land housing the first All Points West Festival . This weekend she bore witness to an event stacked with rising stars, torchbearers and pioneers venturing ahead of the rest. Radiohead doesn't so much break a mold as create a totally new one, shunning all that is bland and broadcasting passion and emotion in their performances, which are an all-encompassing Buddha of noise. On the flipside of this coin, jams guru and Jedi Trey Anastasio stepped back onstage with some familiar faces. This phoenix, back from his personal battles captivated with his axe creating a burst of inspiration thicker than the smog in Beijing. Friday, August 8 08.08.08 - In Chinese, eight is the luckiest of numbers. Friday began with Norton, the smiling police dog, sniffing his way around the fence for bombs. This was a funny thought for some, but with so many people this close to lower Manhattan what else do you expect? Thankfully, there was nothing to worry about, and Norton lightened the mood by dropping a steamer n ...

By: Trevor Pour This is a free jazz album. Still reading? Congratulations. A few short years ago, I would have already hit the 'back' button and moved onto show reviews. Those two words in succession - free and jazz - have the power to make even experienced listener turn a cold shoulder. But, like great poetry, blue cheese and Flemish sour ales, free jazz is an acquired taste with potentially vast rewards. Before listening to this album, however, I had very little interest in the subject. Despite my continued love affair with all things jazzy, I craved at least a semblance (and oftentimes only a semblance) of melody and rhythm. My introduction to free jazz was during my Phish -fanaticism heyday, when I caught Trey Anastasio 's name on a album entitled Surrender to the Air . I distinctly remember popping that disc into my car stereo, expecting to hear a full bodied and complex jazz jam. Instead, I heard noise - a grating, caustic, ugly noise. I couldn't understand a thing. I doubt I ever gave that album a full listen. In the next few years, I lent the CD to a friend writing his thesis, and just never bothered to get it back. So ended my initial foray into free jazz. For those unfamiliar, Bill Dixon is now 82 years old. As a performer on the trumpet, flugelhorn and piano, he dedicated a good portion of his life to academia, teaching music at Bennington College in southern Vermont for nearly thirty years. Yet despite this somewhat iso ...
