OF ALL the football jargon, "high motor'' stands out as one of the more descriptive terms. They use it, and overuse it, for players who are always going. It creates the image of an outboard engine on a speedboat and that roar left in its wake. ...

Before we go out and eat a bunch of brats, I'll give link you folks to some of the Packers coverage in the Wisconsin papers. *The Wisconsin State Journal's Jason Wilde has a tip for the Cowboys: Expect RB Ryan Grant to get the ball when he's in the game. Grant, who led the NFC in rushing the last half of the 2007 season, has been limited by a sore hamstring. He played 21 snaps last week and had 15 carries. *The Green Bay Press-Gazette's Pete Dougherty wonders whether nickel DE Kabeer Gbaja-Baimila can generate a pass rush while working against Flozell Adams . Dougherty notes that Adams, who had some problems with Eagles DE Trent Cole but did not allow a sack, is off to a shaky start this season. *Speaking of OTs off to a shaky start, the Press-Gazette's Tom Pelissero reports that Green Bay LT Chad Clifton has been flagged for holding three times already this season. And Clifton gets the assignment of trying to keep DeMarcus Ware from blasting away at Aaron Rodgers' blind side Sunday night. *The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel's Bob McGinn writes that the Packers consider special teams to be a major strength, and Green Bay is bracing for the challenge of containing NFL kickoff return leader Felix Jones and dynamic punt returner Adam "Pacman" Jones. On a related note, the Cowboys' kickoff coverage team will be missing three players: Roy Williams, Deon "Cricket" Anderson and Anthony Spencer. ...

Terrell Owens caught the long pass in stride, cruised into the end zone and began showing off. With a shimmy in the direction of the Philadelphia Eagles, then some arm-flapping like he used to do when he scored for them, the final Monday night game at Texas Stadium was off to a wild start. Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Terrell Owens (81) celebrates with Ken Hamlin (26) after Owens scored a touchdown against the Philadelphia Eagles in the second quarter of an NFL football game Monday night, Sept. 15, 2008, in Irving, Texas. Dallas Cowboys running back Marion Barber (24) carries the ball past Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Trent Cole (58) in the first quarter of an NFL football game in Irving, Texas, Monday, Sept. 15, 2008. Philadelphia Eagles running back Brian Westbrook (36) runs into the end zone for a touchdown as Dallas Cowboys cornerback Terence Newman (41) looks on during the first quarter of an NFL football game in Irving, Texas, Monday, Sept. 15, 2008. ...

I was wondering why the Eagles had safety Brian Dawkins covering Terrell Owens in the second quarter on Monday. Here's what I came up with after seeing that drive again: On a second-and-9 play from the Philadelphia 16, the Cowboys used a formation with two tight ends to the right, the fullback offset to the right in front of Marion Barber and Terrell Owens as the lone receiver to the left. Philadelphia countered with its base defense and Barber picked up 12 yards with a nice back-side cut after the right side of the Eagles' line was collapsed. Now on first-and-goal from the 4 a few plays later, Jason Garrett called for the same personnel grouping. Philly countered with a goal-line look of six defensive linemen, two linebackers and three safeties. That's what logic says to do when you have a scoring machine like Barber. But that put Dawkins on Owens by himself, and that's an impossible matchup for Dawkins. I wonder if Tony Romo's eyes lit up before the snap. I'm sure Owens' did. At the snap, Owens made a slight fake like he was running a fade and came back inside for the slant. It was an easy pitch and catch for Romo and Owens that was made easier when Flozell Adams flattened Trent Cole. But not only did Owens run a route, so did Jason Witten, Tony Curtis and Deon Anderson. Barber picked up one of the blitzing safeties. Same formation, a completely different look. ...

I'm sure he would rather have remained anonymous. It's tough to get a big play called back by a holding penalty, but Cory Procter clearly grabbed Trent Cole from behind after the DE spun off Flozell Adams and blew by the backup guard. ...

Eagles defensive end Chris Clemons, who’s missed a good chunk of the preseason with a calf injury, practiced today, a team spokesman said. Today’s 10-10-10- practice at the NovaCare Complex was closed to the media, and Clemons never appeared in the locker room while it was open to the media. Clemons, who had eight sacks for the Raiders last year before signing a deal with the Eagles that included a $4 million signing bonus, is a key cog along the defensive line. Other than Pro Bowl pick Trent Cole, he’s the only defensive lineman on the team who’s had more than six sacks in a season since 2005. Darren Howard, mainly a nickel defensive tackle now, had 11 sacks back in 2004. Clemons struggled picking up the defense early in camp, then missed time after he was hospitalized with dehydration at Lehigh, then suffered the calf injury. He didn’t play in any of the preseason games. Reggie Brown, who’s been out for three weeks with a hamstring injury, was at practice, but it was unclear how much work he actually did. Brown was in the locker room during the open period for about 15 seconds. Asked if he practiced, Brown shook his head now. When he was asked if he did anything, trainer Rick Burkholder grabbed him, took him into the trainer’s room, and said, “He’s mine now.” Brown never reappeared during the open locker room period. Burkholder is barred by head coach Andy Reid from talking to the media. No coaches were made available to the med ...

The Birds inked another of their draft picks Tuesday, signing third-round defensive end Bryan Smith to a four-year deal. That leaves second-rounders Trevor Laws and DeSean Jackson as the only remaining unsigned draft picks. You won't find typical NFL defensive end body size in Smith, who's 6-2, 245 pounds, which is why the native Texan ended up at FCS school McNeese State instead of Texas or another Big 12 powerhouse. The Eagles think Smith can follow a similar path navigated by Trent Cole , who in 2005 had came from a small school ( Cincinnati ) and compensated for a slight frame with a nonstop motor. Duplicating Cole's succcess is easier said than done - Cole has emerged into a Pro Bowler and seems to be the steal of that year's draft - but it's more likely that Smith, with some extra pounds, can develop into a situational pass-rusher, someone who can add a speed rush dinension and also play Jim Johnson's "Joker" position in blitz schemes. If he turns into another Trent Cole, then good for the Eagles. Smith is a strong candidate to get Gocong'd this summer. "Gocong'd" is the term given to a raw player in need of grooming who mysteriously sustains an injury during training camp major enough to warrant being placed injured reserve. It's named after SAM backer Chris Gocong , a third-round pick in 2006 who "allegedely" suffered neck stingers in his first training camp severe enough to go on IR. It seemed like a convenient injury at ...

Like all good things, this post has come to the end. Offense wins games, but defense wins championships, and that’s today’s topic. We are going to look at the defenses of both teams. Who they have, what’s their depth, performance, injuries, and before it’s all over, I give you the winner! So get your popcorn ready, because this is going to be a show. Just a few quick notes: 1) All the numbers referenced in this article come from the 2007 season, and were reported at NFL.com 2) Depth charts were provided by Dallascowboys.com and the Philadelphiaeagles.com .   Philadelphia is now on the clock.                   The Philadelphia Eagles’ base defense is a 4-3 system. This means that there are 4 down lineman, and 3 linebackers that make up the front 7 of the defense. The most important part of the Eagles defensive scheme is blitzing and creating pressure. Jim Johnson, the Eagles Defensive Coordinator, will send blitzes from anywhere to create pressure, and hopefully create turnovers. The Eagles starting lineup and backups are as followed: ·         Left Defensive End – Juqua Parker Backups are Victor Abiamiri, Chris Clemons ·         Left Defensive Tackle – Mike Patterson Backups are Trevor Laws ·         Right Defensive Tackle – Broderick Bunkley Backups are Dan Klecko ·         Right Defensive End – Trent Cole Backups are Darren Howard, Bryan Smith ·         Strong Side Linebacker – Chris Gocong Backups are Tank Daniels ...

Here's the truth about why the Eagles won.  Against the Steelers.  The Steelers love to run the ball.   The Steelers got 27 yards on 15 rushes by their running backs.  This forced Rothelisberger and Leftwich to drop back 45 times.  The Steelers never win when they have to throw 75% of the time.  That's how the Eagles win, not the Steelers.   The result was 9 sacks, 4 more near sacks where Rothelisberger managed to get 1 yard in front of the line of scrimmage, an intentional grounding int he end zone that should have been a 10th sack, a bogus offsides penalty against Trent Cole that should have been another sack, numerous hits and hurries, 2 forced fumbles, 1 interception and a partridge in a pear tree.   While everyone has been talking about a lot of other things, the Eagles have quietly stepped up as the NFL's #1 rushing defense. ...

Does anyone get the sense that TK and RJ do not like each other?  I admit that I decided to suffer through their awful commentary: Jaws fellating the iggles whenever he could, and TK just turning a terrible performance. I remember several instances where RJ commentary sounded euphoric when the iggles were competing with dallas; he did not go full homer but shades of green were showing.  TK noticed this and he would rehash the old TO was the best receiver Dmac ever had, dallas was bigger than the yankees, dallas has the stars and the allure, Trent Cole was too aggressive on the false start hit of tony curtis, etc.  Every opportunity TK had to give a "sharp stick poke" to the back of RJ head he took it; it sounded like he was just waiting for the next opportunity to get under RJ skin.  Maybe he wants RJ to break out of his normal mode and turn it into a pti session; not sure but was it noticible to anyone else who watched the game without the mute button on?   ...

i've had enough of the texas ratfucks around here.   we all pretty much know and accept the circumstances around this game.  both teams have very good quarterbacks, they have tremendous offensive weapons, and they have untested defenses that have ranged from acceptable to great over the last 3 years.   we know this.  the cowboys have advantages at RB and WR.  hell, probably TE as well. the eagles strengths match up against this.  they have big, quick, young linebackers, 6 of them, and if there's any corps in the league that has a chance to match up against 2 RBs like barber and jones, or a TE like witten, it's the eagles.  and if you think you know what to expect from the D, forget it.  this D has the personnel to run any formation.  you'll see a base 4-3.  you'll see liberal use of the nickel.  and i guarantee you'll see some 3-4.  Trent Cole and chris clemons will be coming off the edge, hard high and fast, and if you can't handle them 1 on 1, you'll be hurting after gocong comes 'round the corner.   the offense can score.  westbrook may be in his decline phase, but he's still a top 5 back, and it brings a smile to my face, knowing that they beat an NFL team by 35 points, with westbrook having, at best, the third most impressive performance.   so, i'm calling it.  take the under and take the eagles.  they win by 20+ points, and they hold dallas under 13.      get your popcorn ready.  ...

As before, you can find my mostly irrational answers to JasonB of Bleeding Green Nation's questions over the Redskins defense here . I had my own questions for him over his beloved Eagles and he was kind enough to abide. In other words: The dude abides. Hogs Haven : I don't have the exact numbers in front of me but you guys had something like 87 sacks against Pittsburgh. Uhm. That is terrifying. You lead the league in sacks and I think as a result recovered fumbles. Assuming damage is done to Jason Campbell this week, who is the main culprit? There's a lot of guys getting a lot of sacks on your team so far. Bleeding Green Nation : Yeah it's been a real team effort. In typical Jim Johnson style he'll bring pressure from everywhere… But if I had to pick one guy it would Juqua Parker who has been a real pleasant surprise this year. He already has 3.5 sacks this year and has been playing like a man possessed. Coming off his first pro bowl, Trent Cole has gotten a lot of attention on other side and Parker has really taken advantage of the opportunities that has given him. He seems to get pressure from that left side almost every play. He's always been a decent pass rusher that's good for 5 or 6 sacks a year… but so this year he's played on a different level. HH : As good as your pass rush has been, you're even better against the run. Your defense was good last year, is typically quite good, but I don't think they were this good. What ...
