Filed under: Reviews , Features Good news for Trauma Center fans -- if you liked the first game, it stands to reason that you'll enjoy Under the Knife 2 . All the slicing, stitching, and ass-kicking potential of the first is here, and with more options lifted from the Wii version. But if you didn't like Trauma Center the first time around, the Easy mode may not be enough to tempt you into this one. Of course, if you didn't like Trauma Cente r, you're probably more interested in spending your time kicking puppies , or otherwise engaged in some horrific habit. Honestly, the pain of (repeated, egregious) failure aside, it remains one of the best and most intense experiences on the handheld. Can a sequel hope to measure up? We spent a little time with the upcoming title in an effort to find out. Trauma Center: Under the Knife 2 is a clone of the original Nintendo DS surgery game. Everything, from the gameplay to the characters to the game's intense surgical puzzles, seems largely recycled from the first game, which was hailed as one of the first truly innovative and interesting uses of the Nintendo DS' touchscreen. Now, after two installments on Wii, it's all been-there, cut-that as the game returns to the DS. Whether this is a positive or a negative depends largely on your feelings for the original Under the Knife -- although even its most ardent fans will wonder why we waited three years since the series' first DS outing if the result was going to be this cookie-cutter release. Under the Knife 2 continues the story of Dr. Derek Stiles, the brilliant young sawbones from the original game. In this entry, along with nurse Angie Thompson, he has traveled to the fictional African republic of Costigar in an effort to stem the tide of GUILT, the crazy disease that affected patients in the previous game. To combat GUILT in the sequel, players utilize a number of fictionalized and semi-realistic surgical procedures via the Nintendo DS' touchscreen interface. As with the first game, using the system is both easy and intuitive. The surgery screen is filled with bright, easily recognizable icons designating each of the surgeon's tools, and learning the gestures used to heal patients' various wounds is simple.
